ABSTRACT Bioluminescence - visible and cold light emission by living organisms - is a worldwide phenomenon, reported in terrestrial and marine environments since ancient times. Light emission from microorganisms, fungi, plants and animals may have arisen as an evolutionary response against oxygen toxicity and was appropriated for sexual attraction, predation, aposematism, and camouflage. Light emission results from the oxidation of a substrate, luciferin, by molecular oxygen, catalyzed by a luciferase, producing oxyluciferin in the excited singlet state, which decays to the ground state by fluorescence emission. Brazilian Atlantic forests and Cerrados are rich in luminescent beetles, which produce the same luciferin but slightly mutated luciferases, which... |

ABSTRACT Cationic derivatives of 5,10,15-tris[4-(pyridin-4-ylsulphanyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl]-corrolategallium(III)pyridine and 5,10,15-tris[4-(pyridin-2-ylsulfanyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl]-correlategallium(III)pyridine were synthesized and their photosensitizing properties against the naturally bioluminescent Gram-negative bacterium Allivibrio fischeri were evaluated. The cationic corrole derivatives exhibited antibacterial activity at micromolar concentrations against this Gram-negative bacterium strain. |

The stimulatory effect of low concentrations of toxic chemicals on organismal metabolism, referred to as hormesis, has been found to be common in the widely used luminescence bioassay. This paper aims to study the hormesis phenomenon in both marine and freshwater luminescent bacteria, named Photobacterium phosphorem and Vibrio qinghaiensis. The effects of Cu (II), Zn (II), Cd (II) and Cr (VI) on luminescence of these two bacteria were studied for 0 to 75 minutes exposure by establishing dose- and time-response curves. A clear hormesis phenomenon was observed in all four testing metals at low concentrations under the condition of luminescence assays. |

Brazil is the country with the largest number of bioluminescent beetle species in the world. However, estimates suggest that this number could much be higher, since many species remain to be discovered. In this work we made a survey of the species of bioluminescent beetles in Serra de Paranapiacaba - the largest remnant of Atlantic Forest in São Paulo State. The survey was done at Intervales State Park, Carlos Botelho State Park and municipality of Tapiraí and the following species were collected: Aspisoma lineatum, Aspisoma physonotum, Aspisoma fenestrata, Cratomorphus besckey, Cratomorphus distinctus, Photinus penai, Photinus sp1, Photinus sp9, Ethra aff. malledicta or axilaris, Ethra aff. adicta , Lucidotini incertae sedis, Cladodes flabellicornis,... |

Researches in the bioluminescence field vertical structure, amplitude characteristics and spatial distribution in the Black Sea have been conducted in IBSS, NAS of Ukraine, from up to the present time. Enough evidencies are available to testify dramatic changes in different Black sea ecosystem components including bioluminescence field parameters, which took place last decades. But still there is no direct answer to the question about the reasons for such transformations, as variability of the Black Sea biophysical (bioluminescence) and biological characteristics at the climatic time scales, i.e. at the scale of decade periods are not sufficiently studied now. The most pronounced changes in vertical structure of the bioluminescence field are observed in... |

Luminous dinoflagellates biomass seasonal dynamics as well as bioluminescence field vertical structure changeability during the year cycle (2008–2009) near the Sevastopol was studied. Two evident peaks during the cold (February) and warm (July–August) periods were revealed, which was connected with differences in development level and phytoplankton vertical distribution, which were stipulated in turn, by water hydrostructure peculiarities in the natural stratification layers. “Winter” bioluminescence maximum in the surface layer was stipulated by the development of C. fusus; P. divergens; P. oblongum mainly, with the cells volume, maximal in the year. The second one, located in the thermocline layer and lower, was formed, mainly, at the expense of C. fusus... |

Data collected during cruises of the Former Soviet Union (in 1963-1989) and the British Atlantic meridional transect program (in 1995-1999) were used to analyse macroscale patterns in phyto- and zooplankton biomass, size structure, species diversity, chlorophyll a, and plankton bioluminescence in the macroscale anticyclonic gyre of the South Atlantic Ocean. The spatial pattern of bioluminescence intensity was in good agreement with that of remotely sensed (CZCS) chlorophyll a, phosphate, salinity, and copepod species diversity index distributions especially in terms of geographic inclinations of the isolines, both associated with the north-westward pattern off the South equatorial current. Among the 416 copepod species recorded in samples, 51 species were... |

The deep-sea benthic ecosystems of the French Kerguelen exclusive economic zone remain poorly understood. To address benthic conservation issues, the authors recently contributed expert knowledge to guide the recent extension of the Marine Reserve of the ‘Terres australes françaises’. In this new study, we propose a benthic ecoregionalisation of the northern Kerguelen Plateau based on a measurable and repeatable methodology that relies on the generalised dissimilarity modelling technique. Data of macro-epibenthic invertebrate species from the POKER 2 (2010) fish stock assessment survey have been used to compute the models. Our results allow us (i) to characterise and map benthic landscape units based on assemblages of marine invertebrates pooled by taxa... |

This article describes a method for high-throughput competition assays using a bioluminescent strain of L. monocytogenes. This method is based on the use of the luminescent indicator strain L. monocytogenes EGDelux. The luminescence of this strain is correlated to growth, which make it suitable to monitor the growth of L. monocytogenes in mixed cultures. To this aim, luminescence kinetics were converted into a single numerical value, called the Luminescence Disturbance Indicator (LDI), which takes into account growth inhibition phenomena resulting in latency increase, decrease in the luminescence rate, or reduction of the maximum luminescence. The LDI allows to automatically and simultaneously handle multiple competition assays which are required for... |
