ABSTRACT Bioluminescence - visible and cold light emission by living organisms - is a worldwide phenomenon, reported in terrestrial and marine environments since ancient times. Light emission from microorganisms, fungi, plants and animals may have arisen as an evolutionary response against oxygen toxicity and was appropriated for sexual attraction, predation, aposematism, and camouflage. Light emission results from the oxidation of a substrate, luciferin, by molecular oxygen, catalyzed by a luciferase, producing oxyluciferin in the excited singlet state, which decays to the ground state by fluorescence emission. ABSTRACT Cationic derivatives of 5,10,15-tris[4-(pyridin-4-ylsulphanyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl]-corrolategallium(III)pyridine and 5,10,15-tris[4-(pyridin-2-ylsulfanyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl]-correlategallium(III)pyridine were synthesized and their photosensitizing properties against the naturally bioluminescent Gram-negative bacterium Allivibrio fischeri were evaluated. The cationic corrole derivatives exhibited antibacterial activity at micromolar concentrations against this Gram-negative bacterium strain.

Hormesis response of marine and freshwater luminescent bacteria to metal exposure Biol. Res.

The stimulatory effect of low concentrations of toxic chemicals on organismal metabolism, referred to as hormesis, has been found to be common in the widely used luminescence bioassay. This paper aims to study the hormesis phenomenon in both marine and freshwater luminescent bacteria, named Photobacterium phosphorem and Vibrio qinghaiensis. The effects of Cu (II), Zn (II), Cd (II) and Cr (VI) on luminescence of these two bacteria were studied for 0 to 75 minutes exposure by establishing dose- and time-response curves. A clear hormesis phenomenon was observed in all four testing metals at low concentrations under the condition of luminescence assays.

Several species are found in the Atlantic rain forest, one of the richest and most threatened tropical forests in the world. We have catalogued the biodiversity of bioluminescent species mainly of Elateroidea superfamily occurring in one of the last largest and most preserved remnants of Atlantic rain forest, located at the Biological Station of Boracéia of São Paulo University (Salesopolis, SP, Brazil). Bioluminescent bacteria: lux genes as environmental biosensors BJM

Bioluminescent bacteria are widespread in natural environments. Over the years, many researchers have been studying the physiology, biochemistry and genetic control of bacterial bioluminescence. These discoveries have revolutionized the area of Environmental Microbiology through the use of luminescent genes as biosensors for environmental studies. This paper will review the chronology of scientific discoveries on bacterial bioluminescence and the current applications of bioluminescence in environmental studies, with special emphasis on the Microtox toxicity bioassay. Also, the general ecological significance of bioluminescence will be addressed.

The autoinducer AI-2 has been proposed to serve as a ‘universal signal’ for interspecies communication. This study aimed to evaluate the capability of Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus cereus strains isolated from ricotta processing to produce quorum sensing signalling molecules (AI-2). Некоторые аспекты формирования синоптической изменчивости поля биолюминесценции и скопления планктона в Чёрном море. IBSS Repository

Представлены результаты исследования поля биолюминесценции, гидрологических и гидрохимических характеристик Чёрного моря. Показано, что зоны повышенной интенсивности поля биолюминесценции и концентраций планктона в Чёрном море соответствуют положению 9-ти квазистационарных зон антициклонических вихрей, располагающихся над континентальным склоном. В этих районах происходит заглубление поверхностных аэрированных вод до глубины 100 – 120 м, что создаёт благоприятные условия для развития гидробионтов, в частности, нагула многих промысловых рыб.

Influence of seamounts at the Atlantic Ocean on modification of the bioluminiscence and plankton characteristics IBSS Repository

The bioluminescence and plankton characteristics in the euphotic layer over 11 seamounts in the Atlantic Ocean were studied. Investigations were carried out along the axis of flow over the mounts. Bathyphotometric measurements (1606 casts) were taken from 2 m to 100 m depths at 87 stations over the various seamounts with a vertical resolution of 1 m. Plankton samples were taken with Juday nets and submersible electric pumps with 36 m3• •h-1 performance. The bioluminescence characteristics varied over seamounts with different geomorphological features. Для выявления связи между биолюминесценцией и планктоном исследована корреляция между вертикальными профилями биолюминесценции и данными 154 проб фито- и 206 проб зоопланктона. Исследованный район (Баренцево и Норвежское моря, 1984 – 1987 гг.) сильно гетерогенен по водным массам и, соответственно, по видовому составу планктонного сообщества. Видовой состав планктонного сообщества достаточно беден, что влияет на стабильность корреляционных связей. Кроме того, наблюдается ярко выраженная сезонная сукцессия планктонного сообщества. Luminous dinoflagellates biomass seasonal dynamics as well as bioluminescence field vertical structure changeability during the year cycle (2008–2009) near the Sevastopol was studied. В пелагиали Чёрного моря в феврале – апреле коэффициент корреляции между биолюминесценцией и общей численностью фитопланктона равен 0.64, а между биолюминесценцией и численностью светящегося фитопланктона – 0.53. Более слабая корреляционная связь биолюминесценции с численностью светящихся клеток может быть следствием не учитываемого в данной работе вклада мелких форм фитопланктона и/или светящихся бактерий.

Plankton communities of the South Atlantic anticyclonic gyre ArchiMer

Data collected during cruises of the Former Soviet Union (in 1963-1989) and the British Atlantic meridional transect program (in 1995-1999) were used to analyse macroscale patterns in phyto- and zooplankton biomass, size structure, species diversity, chlorophyll a, and plankton bioluminescence in the macroscale anticyclonic gyre of the South Atlantic Ocean. The spatial pattern of bioluminescence intensity was in good agreement with that of remotely sensed (CZCS) chlorophyll a, phosphate, salinity, and copepod species diversity index distributions especially in terms of geographic inclinations of the isolines, both associated with the north-westward pattern off the South equatorial current. Myctophidae comprise the largest biomass of mesopelagic fishes in the Southern Ocean. This family has the ability to emit light – bioluminescence – via specific organs called photophores, and from the head and caudal organs. Through biochemical analyses, this study reveals that coelenterazine is the substrate for light reaction in the five most common myctophid species from the Southern Ocean. The results also support the hypothesis of the acquisition of this molecule via the food chain and reveal the presence of two stabilised storage forms of coelenterazine (enol-sulfate and dehydrocoelenterazine) within various tissues of the studied species. This article describes a method for high-throughput competition assays using a bioluminescent strain of L. monocytogenes. This method is based on the use of the luminescent indicator strain L. monocytogenes EGDelux. The luminescence of this strain is correlated to growth, which make it suitable to monitor the growth of L. monocytogenes in mixed cultures.
