Science, society, and flagship species: social and political history as keys to conservation outcomes in the Gulf of California Ecology and Society
Vincent, Amanda CJ; Project Seahorse, Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, University of British Columbia; a.vincent@oceans.ubc.ca.
Socio-political issues are important in environmental policy outcomes but are often overlooked in conservation planning. We analyze the effects of historical social, political, and ecological contexts on conservation policy outcomes as applied to the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve. A rushed implementation, perhaps necessary for the protection of endangered totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) and vaquita (Phocoena sinus), occurred with little community consultation, resulting in enduring disgruntlement among stakeholders that undermined its effectiveness. Overfishing and habitat degradation continue both inside and outside the reserve, and totoaba and vaquita remain Critically Endangered, with the latter’s population...

A co-modelling process of social and natural dynamics on the isle of Ouessant: Sheep, turf and bikes ArchiMer
Rouan, Mathias; Kerbiriou, Christian; Levrel, Harold; Etienne, M.
An interdisciplinary team has applied the multi-agent system formalism to study shrub encroachment in the Biosphere Reserve on the isle of Ouessant. The main goals were (1) to understand vegetation dynamics, and (2) to represent how main agents, or actors view the dynamics of natural resources in relation to their own living practices. The management strategies established for each type of stakeholders were formalised and the impact of these strategies on biodiversity was analyzed at various temporal and spatial scales. Following a short description of the model, three aspects of the modelling process are discussed in more detail: the use of the chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) population as a representative variable for the interactions between...

Evaluating microhabitat selection by Calomys musculinus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in western Aargentina using luminous powders Mastozool. neotrop.
Corbalán,Valeria; Debandi,Guillermo.
The aim of this study was to use fluorescent powder tracking techniques to study the use of space and the patterns of microhabitat selection in Calomys musculinus at the Ñacuñán Biosphere Reserve. The examination of over 3000 microhabitat records from the trails of eight individuals indicates that, in general, the species does not discriminate among major habitat types; however, we found significant differences in the specific categories of substrate used by the species within habitat. In addition, we also note that C. musculinus uses vertical habitats up to 50 cm.

Habitat characteristics and environmental parameters influencing fish assemblages of karstic pools in southern Mexico Neotropical Ichthyology
Vega-Cendejas,María Eugenia; Santillana,Mirella Hernandez de; Norris,Steven.
Fish assemblage structure was evaluated and compared among 36 karstic pools located within protected areas of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (southern Mexico) and unprotected adjacent areas beyond the Reserve. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (MDS), indicator species analysis (ISA), and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to identify which environmental factors reflected local influences and to evaluate the correlation of these variables with fish assemblages structure. Thirty-one species were encountered in these karstic pools, some for the first time within the Reserve. These aquatic environments were separated into three groups based on physico-chemical characteristics. Although CCA identified significant associations between several...
