Eight rice lines viz. CNA 8983, IAC-1732, IAC-1733, IAC-1748, IAC-1736, IAC-201, Volano and Arborea were evaluated in greenhouse for resistance against the leaf blast disease caused by Magnoparthe gracea. Lines CNA 8983, IAC 1732, IAC 1733 and IAC 1748 showed satisfactory resistance against the blast fungus while IAC 1736 and IAC 201 were intermediate and Volano and Arborea susceptible. All lines did not have lipoxygenase activity increased by methyljasmonic acid, however enzyme activity showed a positive relationship with resistance. |

Seven sources of resistance to the two predominant races IB-1 and IB-9 of the rice blast pathogen Pyricularia grisea were selected based on leaf blast reaction in tests conducted under controlled greenhouse conditions. Crosses involving resistant and susceptible parents were made to study the inheritance of the disease reaction for different sources of resistance. The F1 and F2 progenies of all crosses, including backcrosses to resistant and susceptible parents, were tested for reaction to leaf blast. The data showed that resistance is controlled by one to three genes that segregate independently in most of the donors. Non-allelic interaction among resistance genes, including dominant epistasis, was identified. |

Program on research and development of rainfed lowland rice in north eastern Thailand in collaboration with the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) have carried out the project to develop an early maturing, blast resistant, non-glutinous rice variety. The cross between IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 and RGDU99016-MAS-77 was developed and the progenies were backcrossed to IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 for 3 time at RGDU, BIOTEC. The selected promising line; RGDU06337-MAS-24-B-B, was finally obtained. This line is a non-glutinous, photoperiod sensitive, early maturing line which flowers approximately on October 8 and is ready for harvest on November 11. The average number of panicles per hill is 11 panicles. The average plant height is 114 cm. with... |
