The Effects of Mad Cow Disease on U.S. Live Cattle Futures Price AgEcon
Paiva, Newton N..
Due to red meat consumption, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) disease has been a major human health concern since its discovery in 1986. An event study approach was applied to determine the impact of BSE official events that occurred in the United Kingdom on U.S. live cattle futures prices. When abnormal returns were aggregated during the course of the events, the price series were adversely affected, mainly after the event day. This suggests that market reaction was dissipated quickly and that no leakage of information occurred prior to the event.

POTENTIAL EFFECTS ON U.S. CATTLE AND BEEF PRICES FROM REOPENING THE BORDERS AgEcon
Mattson, Jeremy W.; Koo, Won W..
U.S. trade of beef and live cattle has declined substantially since the discoveries of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada and the United States in 2003. Imports of live cattle from Canada resumed in July 2005, but U.S. beef exports remained substantially below pre-BSE levels as important export markets in Japan and Korea were not regained. The removal of the ban on Canadian imports and the eventual lifting of bans to export markets could affect U.S. cattle and beef prices. In this study, an econometric model is developed and estimated to determine the effects of lifting trade restrictions on cattle and beef prices. Results show that if net cattle imports from Canada increase to 1.5 million animals per year, with beef imports held...

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Japan: consumers’ food safety perceptions and willingness to pay for tested beef AgEcon
McCluskey, Jill J.; Grimsrud, Kristine M.; Ouchi, Hiromi; Wahl, Thomas I..
The discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as ‘mad cow disease’, in Japan caused anxiety about consuming beef and beef products. As a result, there was a sudden fall in sales of beef that hurt the Japanese beef industry as well as major beef exporters to Japan. We analyse factors that affect Japanese consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) price premiums for BSE-tested beef and estimate the mean WTP for BSE-tested beef using data obtained from a consumer survey in Japan. A single-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation model is used to recover the premium amount. We find that attitudes to food safety, reduction in beef consumption following the BSE outbreak, and being female all have a statistically significant positive...

Sanitary policy for the prevention and surveillance of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Brazil MV&Z
Vaz, Juliana do Amaral Moreira Conforti; Sena, Elaine Fátima de.
The Programa Nacional de Prevenção e Vigilância da Encefalopatia Espongiforme Bovina (PNEEB) was established by the Brazilian Normative Instruction nº 44, on September 17th, 2013. Previously, the health policy was part of the Programa Nacional de Controle da Raiva dos Herbívoros. Since 1990, BSE preventive actions have been established and constantly improved. The main objectives of this program are: to prevent the entrance of BSE agent into the national territory; to apply risk mitigation measures to avoid possible recycling and diffusion of the BSE agent in the country and maintain a surveillance system for the detection of infected animals. The preventive health measures are in line with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) recommendations,...
