Based on extensive molecular and morphological data, all of the native South American species previously assigned to Sisymbrium (tribe Sisymbrieae) are assigned to the genera Chilocardamum, Mostacillastrum, Neuontobotrys, and Polypsecadium of the tribe Schizopetaleae (Brassicaceae). Akey distinguishing these four genera is presented. For each genus, a revised synopsis, an expanded generic description, a key to species, and an enumeration of all taxa is given. Polypsecadium zoellneri is described as a new species from northern Chile, and its distinguishing characters from its nearest relative P. gilliesii are discussed. The following 36 new combinations are proposed: Chilocardamum castellanosii, C. longistylum, C. onuridifolium, Mostacillastrum andinum, M.... |

The soc1 ful double mutant of A. thaliana produced substantial secondary growth throughout all aboveground stems, whereas in the Col accession only a few cell layers of wood were produced at the base of old stems. This increased wood formation may be linked to inactivation of the flowering time genes SOC1 and FUL (Melzer et al., 2008). These two genes could play a crucial regulatory role in triggering genetic mechanisms that lead to insular woodiness outside A. thaliana, and this ‘simple’ two-gene loss could explain why many nonrelated herbaceous families have independently evolved into woody insular lineages throughout the world. However, SOC1 and FUL might not be the only suppressors of cambium formation; other upstream, downstream or parallel-acting... |

Seed morphology of 45 taxa belonging to 23 genera of Brassicaceae were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The taxa included representatives of the tribes Arabideae, Euclidieae, Hesperideae, Lunarieae, Matthioleae, and Sisymbrieae, which all occur in Egypt. Macro- and micromorphological characters, including seed shape, colour, size, the position of the radicle relative to the cotyledons, epidermal cell shape, anticlinal boundaries, outer periclinal cell wall and relief of outer cell walls, are presented. Three types of basic anticlinal cell wall boundaries are recognised and six different shapes of the outer periclinal cell wall are described. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa based on seed characters is provided. |

ABSTRACT Early harvest may decrease seed exposure in the field after physiological maturation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of glyphosate desiccant at different plant desiccation times at pre-harvest on the physiological quality of crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst) seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, involving the application of glyphosate desiccant in the plants at pre-harvest and the control (without plant desiccation) and four desiccation times, with three replicates per treatment. The desiccation of crambe plants at pre-harvest with glyphosate was efficient, positively affecting seed germination and vigor. Application of the desiccant in the plants, with 90% of brown seeds, at... |

Effects of sex, host-plant deprivation and presence of conspecific immatures on the cannibalistic behavior of wild Ascia monuste orseis (Godart) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae). The specialist cabbage caterpillar Ascia monuste orseis (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) feeds on plants of the Brassicaceae family, but may eventually ingest conspecific eggs and larvae during the larval stage. The present study examines feeding behavior of 4th and 5th instar cabbage caterpillars in relation to sex, host-plant deprivation and presence of conspecifics. We recorded number of egg ingested per larvae, developmental indices and duration of feeding, exploratory and resting behavior. Kale deprived caterpillars presented high rates of cannibalism, development delay and decreased... |
