Use of direct and iterative solvers for estimation of SNP effects in genome-wide selection Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pimentel,Eduardo da Cruz Gouveia; Sargolzaei,Mehdi; Simianer,Henner; Schenkel,Flávio Schramm; Liu,Zengting; Fries,Luiz Alberto; Queiroz,Sandra Aidar de.
The aim of this study was to compare iterative and direct solvers for estimation of marker effects in genomic selection. One iterative and two direct methods were used: Gauss-Seidel with Residual Update, Cholesky Decomposition and Gentleman-Givens rotations. For resembling different scenarios with respect to number of markers and of genotyped animals, a simulated data set divided into 25 subsets was used. Number of markers ranged from 1,200 to 5,925 and number of animals ranged from 1,200 to 5,865. Methods were also applied to real data comprising 3081 individuals genotyped for 45181 SNPs. Results from simulated data showed that the iterative solver was substantially faster than direct methods for larger numbers of markers. Use of a direct solver may allow...

Reliability of breeding values between random regression and 305-day lactation models PAB
Padilha,Alessandro Haiduck; Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Daltro,Darlene dos Santos; Braccini Neto,José.
Abstract The objective of this work was to verify the gain in reliability of estimated breeding values (EBVs), when random regression models are applied instead of conventional 305-day lactation models, using fat and protein yield records of Brazilian Holstein cattle for future genetic evaluations. Data set contained 262,426 test-day fat and protein yield records, and 30,228 fat and protein lactation records at 305 days from first lactation. Single trait random regression models using Legendre polynomials and single trait lactation models were applied. Heritability for 305-day yield from lactation models was 0.24 (fat) and 0.17 (protein), and from random regression models was 0.20 (fat) and 0.21 (protein). Spearman correlations of EBVs, between lactation...

Persistency of lactation using random regression models and different fixed regression modeling approaches R. Bras. Zootec.
Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Costa,Claudio Napolis.
Milk yield test-day records on the first three lactations of 25,500 Holstein cows were used to estimate genetic parameters and predict breeding values for nine measures of persistency and 305-d milk yield in a random regression animal model using two criteria to define the fixed regression. Legendre polynomials of fourth and fifth orders were used to model the fixed and random regressions of lactation curves. The fixed regressions were adjusted for average milk yield on populations (single) or subpopulations (multiple) formed by cows that calved at the same age and in the same season. Akaike Information (AIC) and Bayesian Information (BIC) criteria indicated that models with multiple regression lactation curves had the best fit to test-day milk records of...

Genetic parameters and alternatives for evaluation and ranking of Nellore young bulls in pasture performance tests R. Bras. Zootec.
Fragomeni,Breno de Oliveira; Scalez,Daiane Cristina Becker; Toral,Fábio Luiz Buranelo; Bergmann,José Aurélio Garcia; Pereira,Idalmo Garcia; Costa,Paula Souza Teixeira da.
The objective of this study was to estimate (co)variance components for weight at 550 days, average daily gain and an index with both traits, and to compare alternatives for evaluation and ranking of Nellore young bulls in pasture performance tests. The heritability estimates were 0.73, 0.31 and 0.44 for weight at 550 days, average daily gain and index, respectively. Animals were ranked according to their predicted breeding values or the phenotypic deviations in relation to the mean of the test. Although the correlations between breeding values and phenotypic deviations were high, there were differences in the number of animals selected in common when the selection criteria were the predicted breeding values or the phenotypic deviations. Mixed models are...

IDENTIFICATION OF IDEOTYPES BY CANONICAL ANALYSIS IN Panicum maximum Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Martuscello,Janaina Azevedo; Braz,Thiago Gomes dos Santos; Jank,Liana; Cunha,Daniel de Noronha Figueiredo Vieira da; Carvalho,Ana Luiza Silva.
Grouping of genotypes by canonical variable analysis is an important tool in breeding. It allows the grouping of individuals with similar characteristics that are associated with superior agronomic performance and may indicate the ideal profile of a plant for the region. The objective of the present study was to define, by canonical analysis, the agronomic profile of Panicum maximum plants adapted to the Agreste region. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with 28 treatments, 22 genotypes of Panicum maximum, and cultivars Mombasa, Tanzania, Massai, Milenio, BRS Zuri, and BRS Tamani in triplicate in 4-m² plots. Plots were harvested five times and the following traits were evaluated: plant height; total, leaf, and stem; dead dry...
