Introduction Starting in 1986, the ANVAR contributed well appreciated financial support in order to set up an original seeding technique characterized by artificial seeding production in a laboratory. This advantageous new way of seeding, i.e. independency from nature, yield increase and true competitiveness compared to traditional methods, nevertheless requires strict adherence to a procedure progressively elaborated during numerous trials in laboratory as well as at sea. The program ended in July 1989 after testing the cultivation protocol on a 2 hectare exploitation scale, in order to better detect what could be improved to greatly increase productivity, facilitate the work of the harvester and to better adapt the operating mode to environmental... |

The main objective of this paper is to thoroughly examine the remotely sensed wind characteristics around the coasts of Brittany as well as some more specific areas. The offshore wind power potential is then assessed. To achieve this objective, information on wind speed and direction with sufficient spatial and temporal sampling under all weather conditions and during day and night is required. This study uses more than 12 years (December 1999–December 2012) of consistent remotely sensed data retrieved from the ASCAT and QuikSCAT scatterometers to estimate the conventional moments and associated wind distribution parameters. The latter are comparable to wind observations from meteorological stations. Furthermore, combining in-situ and scatterometer wind... |

The study undertaken during the 1994-1998 planning contract on the Breton fishing fleet made it possible to underscore the size of the economic activity in regional territorial waters: More than 85% of the ships work there. This space, which is a matter of national sovereignty, is mainly managed at the regional level. To clarify the paths that may need to be taken, it seemed opportune to us to identify spatially the coastal fisheries, as well as the main current problems of planning. The fishing zones were mapped. This work required special surveys of the local fishing committees, because it could not be done from existing fishing statistics. The surveys allowed us to approach the localization of the various trades' fishing zones on maps at 1/50,000, as... |

On tens of sandy beaches of Brittany, a green seaweed (Ulva) blooms during spring and summer. In the sites where the proliferation is the most important, the total biomass amounted to 20 000 t of wet weight in 1997, at the time of maximum. These "green tides" occur every year in nearly the same locations. They have a very harmful impact on local tourism. In many communes, beached and rotting algae are collected and dumped (43 000 m 3 as a whole in 1997). The main development of biomass takes place between the surf zone and the bare sand. The outbreak requires three coexisting conditions : 1) a sandy beach gently sloping, 2) a weak residual current (i.e. once the tidal back and forth movement has been filtered), 3) a nitrogen loading, even moderate (ammonium... |

Nearshore is an integrated part of the coastal zone, as well as beaches and coastal dunes. However, they remain poorly studied compared to the emerged part of the system, because of the limited access for scientific monitoring. The nearshore of Combrit - Ile-Tudy (south Brittany, France), addressed in this paper, is a good example. The first aim of this study is to present a methodology for the interpretation of old bathymetric surveys (supplied by the French naval hydrographic and oceanographic service SHOM) which considers all the inaccuracies related to this type of data. Then, this method is implemented in order to depict the morphological evolution of the nearshore by comparing the ancient bathymetric surveys (19th and 20th centuries) and the recent... |

Knowledge regarding the systemic vulnerability of coastal territories to erosion and flood has progressed during the last decades thanks to the consideration of hazards but also of other components such as the stakes, the management and the social representations of the coastal risks. However, in numerous cases the development and urbanization of coastal territories submitted to the coastal risks continues. It results in the increase of exposed populations as well as in the increase of the cost of exposed properties, increasing in return their vulnerability. So, in the objective to improve the management strategies and to strengthen the memory of the risk, the need to specify the characteristics of hazards remains important. In this sense, the intensity,... |

Basically, a dredge is a bottom-towed gear and consists of a metal frame with a blade or teeth, to dig into the sediment and extract the shelled molluscs, and a mesh bag to collect the catch. Whereas hand dredging is observed on some intertidal beds (Donax trunculus in France), the use of dredge generally needs a fishing boat. There is a great diversity of dredge types, with specific designs used to target different species in particular beds: Manual dredges for Donax (Donax trunculus), Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) and clams (Venerupis pulastra, Ruditapes sp) Dredges for King scallops (Pecten maximus) Dredges for Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) Dredge for Queen scallops (black and white, Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularia) Dredges for small... |

At the end of the seventies, as fishing abundance (based on Catch Per Unit Effort) in crabs and lobster fishery steadily declined, operating expenses increased, and fishing boats changed strategy (changing metiers, covering larger distance to fishing areas, fishing seasons being extended, ...) professionals and scientists aimed to consider reinforcing management measures. To enlighten and support potential related decisions, the Comité Régional des Pêches et Cultures Marines de Bretagne (Regional Committee for fishing and farming in Brittany), together with the ISTPM (Ifremer since 1984), conducted a survey on the exploited populations and gave a review of the involved Breton fleet. This report shows the results of a survey conducted among fishermen,... |

The 1998 survey of green tides on the Brittany coast was performed in the same way as that of 1997 in order to allow comparison. 11 includes an inventory ofail the concerned sites, and a precise assessment ofthirteen ofthem, the most loaded. On these ones, nitrogen fluxes were surveyed during the critical period, and the green seaweed stock on the beach and in the first waves was quantified. The climatic conditions were opposite between the two years, very dry in spring and summer 1997, and wet in 1998. The irradiance contrast was inverse, and less pronounced. The nitrate contents and mostly the flows were more important in 1998. They generated nitrogen fluxes about 3.3 times those of 1997. The total number of sites concerned in 1998 is clearly higher than... |

Since 1989, an homogeneous Crassostrea gigas oyster stock has been distributed once a year on several rearing sites in Brittany (3 populations per site). The main quantitative and qualitative growth descriptors, which reflect water quality effects during the monitoring period, are estimated at the end of each year. The 1989-1992 analysis prompted us to describe various growth responses correlated to biotops: oyster production in open areas influenced by oceanic waters was fairly constant in quality, including size and Polydora sp. infestation. In contrast, oysters in estuarine areas, partly affected by eutrophication (e.g., Aber Benoît, Pen Bé), or with a low carrying capacity, were characterized by weight and Polydora sp. infestation heterogeneity. These... |
