Trends in the scientific production on aquatic microhabitats phytotelmata: a scientometric study Biological Sciences

We performed a scientometry to validate trends in the scientific production on phytotelmata and the importance of these microenvironments in the maintenance of biodiversity. We searched for articles in the Web of Science and looked at publications from 1987 to 2016. We collected years of publication, surveyed organisms, countries where the surveys took place, plants that accumulate phytotelmata, scientific journals that publish more about the topic and their respective IFs (Impact Factor) and the keywords of each article. We built a heatmap using the most frequent keywords in the studies, to investigate the topics studied over the years. We have found 293 publications, increasing over the years. Karyotype characterization and nuclear DNA content measurement in Bromeliaceae: State of the art and future perspectives Anais da ABC (AABC)

In Bromeliaceae, cytogenetic and flow cytometry analyses have been performed to clarify systematic and evolutionary aspects. Karyotyping approaches have shown the relatively high chromosome number, similar morphology and small size of the chromosomes. These facts have prevented a correct chromosome counting and characterization. Authors have established a basic chromosome number of x = 25 for Bromeliaceae. Recently, one karyomorphological analysis revealed that x = 25 is no longer the basic chromosome number, whose genome may have a polyploid origin. Beta diversity patterns of Bromeliaceae growing on rocky cliffs within the Atlantic Forest in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica

Abstract: In recent years there has been increasing attention in patterns of β-diversity and mechanisms related to variations in species composition. In this study, we evaluated beta diversity patterns of bromeliads growing on cliffs immersed in Atlantic Forest. We hypothesized that the species composition varies according to the spatial scale, inferring that there is a replacement of species influenced mainly by environmental factors. Checklist of the Bromeliaceae from Pedra dos Pontões, Mimoso do Sul, Espírito Santo, Brazil, with four first records for the state Biota Neotropica

Bromeliaceae is one of the most relevant taxonomic groups of the Atlantic Forest, where the Brazilian southeastern region stands out as a center of diversity and endemism for many taxa of the family. We present a checklist of the 12 genera and 44 species of Bromeliaceae from the Pedra dos Pontões, in Mimoso do Sul municipality, Espírito Santo state, southeastern Brazil. The Bromelioideae (22 species) was the subfamily with most taxonomic diversity, followed by Tillandsioideae (18 species) and Pitcairnioideae (four species). Characterization of plant growth-promoting bacteria inhabiting Vriesea gigantea Gaud. and Tillandsia aeranthos (Loiseleur) L.B. Smith (Bromeliaceae) Biota Neotropica

Microorganisms that live inside and around a plant can supply it with essential substances, such as phytohormones and essential nutrients. The present investigation aimed to isolate and characterize the phyllosphere, the endophytic, and the water tank bacteria associated with Vriesea gigantea and Tillandsia aeranthos. The bacteria were tested for siderophore and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production, phosphate solubilization, and presence of the nif H gene. Genetic diversity of the bacterial isolates was evaluated by rep-PCR. Sixty-eight bacterial strains were isolated from 3 different microhabitats of V. gigantea and from 2 microhabitats of T. aeranthos bromeliad plants. Transferability and characterization of microsatellite markers in five Bromeliaceae species belonging to the subfamilies Pitcairnioideae and Bromelioideae Biota Neotropica

Microsatellite markers previously developed for Pitcairnia albiflos Herb. and Pitcairnia geysksii L.B.Sm. were used in cross-amplification tests of five other Bromeliaceae species. Ten (76.9%) out of the 13 evaluated pair of primers had positive results for some of the species tested. The number of polymorphic alleles ranged between two and four in most species. Ho values ranged between zero, in Pitcairnia flammea Lindl. (PaA05), Aechmea ramosa Mart ex Schult & Schult and Billbergia horrida Regel (PaC05), and one in Billbergia euphemiae E. Adventitious shoots from nodule cluster cultures of Vriesea reitzii: an endemic and endangered bromeliad from atlantic forest Ciência Rural

The Atlantic Forest is a biome with megadiversity and a number of bromeliads take part of it. This is the case of Vriesea reitzii, an endemic bromeliad threatened with extinction. Tissue culture techniques are valuable tools for the mass propagation of bromeliads, thus reducing pressure in the natural habitat. The aim of the present work was to establish an in vitro protocol based on the induction and proliferation of nodule cluster cultures of this species. Plantlets maintained in MS liquid culture medium plus NAA (2µM) and BAP (4µM) had the basal regions of leaves excised and then inoculated in gelled with agar (7g L-1) MS culture medium plus with Dicamba (2.5; 5; 10; 20 e 30µM) and Kin (2µM) or free of plant growth regulators. Bromeliaceae is a morphologically distinctive and ecologically diverse family originating in the New World. Three centers of diversity, 58 genera, and about 3,140 bromeliad species are currently recognized. We compiled all of the studies related to the reproductive biology, genetic diversity, and population structure of the Bromeliaceae, and discuss the evolution and conservation of this family. Bromeliads are preferentially pollinated by vertebrates and show marked variation in breeding systems, from predominant inbreeding to predominant outcrossing, as well as constancy in chromosome number (2n = 2x = 50). Disgusting or delicious? Predatory behavior of the hylid frog Phyllodytes luteolus on sympatric ants Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

ABSTRACT The phytotelm-dwelling frogs from the genus Phyllodytes Wagler, 1830 have been characterized as specialist frogs regarding their diet strategy which is mainly composed by colonial insects. Herein, we used two species of ants (Camponotus sp. and Gnamptogenys sp.) with distinct defensive mechanisms to test the predatory behavior of Phyllodytes luteolus Wied, 1824. The experiment was conducted with frogs inhabiting a patch of 20 bromeliads (Aechmea cf. blanchetiana). Ants were offered randomly to the frogs until we obtained ten observations of predation of each ant species. An unusual reproductive mode in Hypsiboas (Anura: Hylidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.

We report an unusual reproductive behavior of Hypsiboas pardalis (Spix, 1824). Species belonging to this genus usually are known to reproduce in lentic water bodies, with the development of exotrophic tadpoles. Herein, the bromeligenous behavior is reported for the first time in Hypsiboas Wagler, 1830. Although this reproductive behavior has been observed more than once here, we believe that it is not typical of Hypsiboas, being better characterized as an unusual reproductive mode for Hypsiboas, indicating the presence of plasticity in the reproductive modes of H. pardalis

The collects from mosquitoes' sample that repro-duce in leaf imbricate of bromeliads were done by two differents methods: a conven-tional method where the plants were felled and the water inside were dropped in a recipient and in the second method the samples were collected by sucking the water, so the plant wasn't felled. The number of bromeliads studied in each method was 120 plants from zero to 15 m height. The period of study lasted from january till december 1989.
