In contrast with the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas and the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, Ostrea edulis seed production in the hatchery has been reported to be erratic, with sudden and unexplained larval and post-metamorphosis mortalities. Fecundity and initial larval quality have been related to broodstock conditioning, but effects on larval development and metamorphosis remain poorly understood. In addition, molluscan larval mortalities have been often associated with bacterial contamination and flow-through techniques may help to overcome this problem. Larval development and fatty acid composition of Ostrea edulis (L.) fed four different single diets from conditioning to pre-settlement ArchiMer

Survival, growth and fatty acid composition of Ostrea edulis larvae (L.) fed four different single species, microalgal diets, Tisochrysis lutea (T), Chaetoceros neogracile (Cg), Skeletonema marinoi (Sm) or Tetraselmis suecica (Ts) from broodstock to pre-settlement, were studied. Lower larval growth (5.5m to 6.5m/d) was recorded in progeny continuously fed single S.marinoi or T.suecica, whereas good growth was achieved with single T.lutea (7.8m/d). Larvae, originated from broodstock receiving Sm or Ts, exhibited growth compensation when fed a bispecific balanced diet (TCg). The effects of eight single microalgal diets on sex-ratio and gonad development throughout European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) conditioning ArchiMer

To determine the effects of food quality on Ostrea edulis reproduction, European flat oysters were conditioned during two sets of experiments, carried out in spring and autumn, during 40 days at 19 degrees C, in 50 l transparent flow-through tanks, in triplicate, and fed constantly at 900 mu m(3) mu l(-1), with eight different types of microalgae. Four species were fed per group of trials: Isochrysis affinis galbana, Chaetoceros gracilis, Skeletonema marinoi, and Tetraselmis suecica were fed to flat oysters in the first set; whereas Rhodomonas salina, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Thalassiosira pseudonana, and Pavlova lutheri were provided during the second set of experiments. Pathogenic bacteria are known to be one of the main factors affecting Pecten maximus larval survival in hatcheries. As a result, juvenile production often relies on the use of antibiotics during larval culture. However, limitations of the usage of chemicals such as chloramphenicol in aquaculture have been reinforced due to their negative environmental impact and alternatives are accordingly needed. Thus, the importance of bacterial transfer from oocytes to larvae has been studied here as well as procedures to limit larval mortality in P. maximus.
