Oviposition behavior of wild Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) females deprived of the host Phaseolus vulgaris (Fabaceae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Sperandio,Luiza A. A; Zucoloto,Fernando S.
The insects oviposition behavior is fundamental to study population dynamics, life history evolution, insect-plant and parasitoid-host interactions. Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman, 1833) females oviposition behavior in the presence and absence of a host is unknown. The main objective of this study was to describe in detail the oviposition behavior of host deprived or non-deprived females, and observe how the several situations of deprivation (days without host) influence oviposition. Six groups were assembled, three deprived of the host (for 2, 5 and 8 days) and three control groups (with host), each containing one newly-emerged couple (0-24h) of wild Z. subfasciatus, The non-deprived (control) groups received the hosts every day (5 bean seeds Phaseolus...

Predação de sementes de Senna multijuga (Rich.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby (Caesalpinaceae) por bruquíneos (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Neotropical Entomology
Sari,Lisiane T.; Ribeiro-Costa,Cibele S..
Senna multijuga Rich. I. & B. (Caesalpinaceae) é uma espécie ornamental, comum no Sudeste do Brasil.

Characterization of cowpea genotype resistance to Callosobruchus maculatus PAB
Castro,Maria de Jesus Passos de; Baldin,Edson Luiz Lopes; Cruz,Patrícia Leite; Souza,Camila Moreira de; Silva,Paulo Henrique Soares da.
The objective of this work was to characterize the resistance of 50 cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) genotypes to Callosobruchus maculatus. A completely randomized design with five replicates per treatment (genotype) was used. No-choice tests were performed using the 50 cowpea genotypes to evaluate the preference for oviposition and the development of the weevil. The genotypes IT85 F-2687, MN05-841 B-49, MNC99-508-1, MNC99-510-8, TVu 1593, Canapuzinho-1-2, and Sanzi Sambili show non-preference-type resistance (oviposition and feeding). IT81 D-1045 Ereto and IT81 D-1045 Enramador exhibit antibiosis against C. maculatus and descend from resistant genitors, which grants them potential to be used in future crossings to obtain cowpea varieties with higher levels of...

Occurrence of Amblycerus species in Cordia trichotoma seeds and their influence on germination Rev. Bras. entomol.
Fleck,Marciane Danniela; Costa,Ervandil Corrêa; Araujo,Maristela Machado; Schoeninger,Karine; Machado,Leonardo Mortari; Silva,Jéssica Maus da; Pedron,Leandra; Machado,Dayanna do Nascimento; Boscardin,Jardel.
ABSTRACT Forest species can have their seeds damaged by granivorous insects, especially by those in their larval stage. In this context, this study aims to report the occurrence of Amblycerus species in Cordia trichotoma seeds, to describe their main damage to seeds and effects on germination, as well as their associated hymenopteran parasitoids. Therefore, seven trees were selected in the municipality of Taquaruçu do Sul, RS, Brazil. Fruits were collected weekly from the medium third of the tree crown, from the beginning of their formation until total dehiscence. To examine the damage caused by granivorous insects within the fruits, 15 fruits from each tree were sectioned with a scalpel. Furthermore, 10 fruits from each tree were stored individually in...

Entomofauna associated to fruits and seeds of two species of Enterolobium Mart. (Leguminosae): harm or benefit? Rev. Bras. entomol.
Meiado,Marcos Vinicius; Simabukuro,Eliana Akie; Iannuzzi,Luciana.
Entomofauna associated to fruits and seeds of two species of Enterolobium Mart. (Leguminosae): Harm or benefit? The aims of the present study were to identify the entomofauna associated to the fruits and seeds of Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong and Enterolobium timbouva Mart. (Leguminosae), as well as to determine relationships among insects and the possible harm and/or benefit stemming from these associations. Fruit infestation was evaluated and the insects were identified. Seed consumption (%) and the germination of predated seeds (%) were determined. The fruits of E. contortisiliquum exhibited a high percentage of infestation (91%). The most representative species in the fruits were Lophopoeum timbouvae Lameere, 1884, Merobruchus...

Morphological traits, allometric relationship and competition of two seed-feeding species of beetles in infested pods Rev. Bras. entomol.
Silva,Jessica A.; Monteiro,Angelo B.; Maia,Laís F.; Faria,Lucas D.B..
Abstract Pair-wise competition produces asymmetric consequences for the interacting species, resulting in reduction of species fitness at the individual scale; however, little is known of the effects of competition on the allometric patterns of insects. In this study, we explored how competition, by means of pod infestation, affects the development of female and male individuals in the co-occurring bruchine beetles Merobruchus terani and Stator maculatopygus. We found differences between M. terani and S. maculatopygus in all morphometric traits, but no significant differences between males and females in either species. We also found, with an increasing degree of pod infestation, a positive trend in the pronotum, elytron and body weight of M. terani and a...

Dinâmica populacional de bruquíneos (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) em Senna multijuga (Rich.) H. S. Irwin & Barneby (Caesalpinaceae) Zoologia
Sari,Lisiane Taiatella; Ribeiro-Costa,Cibele Stramare; Roper,James J..
Senna multijuga (Rich.)
