Whole Farm Income Insurance in a Canadian Context AgEcon
Turvey, Calum G..
This paper employs mean-variance and mean-skewness optimization to investigate farmers’ crop choices under Gross Revenue Insurance (GRIP), Whole Farm Income Insurance, the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization program, and its modified 2008 program AgrInvest. To our knowledge this paper is the first to fully consider the endogenous optimization of whole farm insurance in a farm optimization model. The results indicate that farmers will alter farm plans significantly in response to the type of insurance offered and the level of subsidy. Farmers will take on production risks that they would not otherwise take and this risk taking behavior is exacerbated by subsidy.

Overview of Farms Participating in the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) Program, 2004 AgEcon
Nimpagaritse, Fabrice.
Farm Analysis Bulletins (FAB) are undertaken to provide a better understanding of Canadian agriculture at the farm level. Using data from various sources such as Census, Farm Financial Surveys (FFS), Taxfiler, NISA database, etc, FAB's provide information on farm situation as well as highlighting and discussing farm related issues. This bulletin provides an overview of farms that participated in the 2004 Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) program. Charts and tables with a brief accompanying text are used to describe participants in the CAIS Program. Business focussed farms as well as farms whose main source of income was agricultural product sales were more likely to participate in the CAIS Program.

Dynamic Econometric Models of Manitoba Crop Production and Hypothetical Production Impacts for CAIS AgEcon
Coyle, Barry T.; Wei, Ran; Rude, James.
This study analyzes the impact of the Canadian Agriculture Income Stabilization (CAIS)program. The study begins with a specification of dynamic crop production that decomposes static short run crop acreage allocation decisions and dynamic crop yield affects. The modelling framework accommodates risk aversion, price uncertainty, and applies recent aggregation theory to aggregate weather data. Using this framework an analytical model of the impacts of CAIS on crop production is developed. Hypothetical impacts of are simulated using an aggregate Manitoba data set. The results show that CAIS has a substantial impact on the shadow prices of both inputs and outputs. These shadow price effects resulted in a 4 percent increase in long run wheat and barley yields...
