SOME ENERGY PROPERTIES OF NON-TIMBER FOREST TREE RESIDUES FOR FUEL 111
Simoyan, Kayode Joshua; Egbu, Chibuzor P.; Fasina, Oladiran O.
A study was undertaken to determine some energy properties of three non-timber forest tree residues: Bush Mango (Irvingia), Achi (Brachystegia eurycoma) and Para Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) shells for fuel. The ultimate properties (Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Sulphur and Nitrogen contents) of the ground shells were determined. The proximate properties determined were volatile matter, ash and fixed Carbon contents, and calorific values. The shells for the three samples were reduced with a hammer mill to 1.00 mm, 2.00 mm and 4.75 mm particle sizes. The mean of the energy properties of the samples were compared using the New Duncan’s Multiple Range Test to determine if there were significant differences at (P ≤ 0.05). Results obtained showed that Irvingia...

DETERMINATION OF THE CALORIFIC VALUE OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE IN ENUGU, NIGERIA AND ITS POTENTIAL FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION 111
NWOKE, OJI ACHUKA; Okonkwo, Wilfred Ifeanyi; Echiegu, Emmanuel Amagu; Ugwuishiwu, Boniface Obinwanne; Okechukwu, Chibueze Henry.
The work aimed at determination of calorific value of  municipal solid waste in Enugu, Nigeria and its potential for electricity generation. Random truck sampling was used according to American Society of Test and Material (ASTM)  in the collection of samples at Ugwuaji landfill site, Enugu, Nigeria and calorific value was determined using oxygen bomb calorimeter. Enugu has a present  population of 882,178 and the amount of municipal solid waste  generated in Enugu was  estimated to be 420 tonnes daily and this resulted in waste generation rate of   0.48kg/capita/day. The average composition of the municipal solid waste  was 39% putrescible, 11% paper, 21% plastics, 5% textile, and 2% metal, 3% glass and 19% others. The average moisture content Volatile...

Calorific Value of Dried Branches of Coconut Plant at Different Moisture Contents 111
Basunia, Mohammad Ali; BASUNIA, MOHAMMAD Ali; Bin Haji Zaini, Muhammad Hamzi.
The reserves of non-renewable energy sources such as coal, crude oil and natural gas are not limitless, they gradually get exhausted and their price continually increases. This project showed how coconut branches could be an alternative source of energy. The calorific values of dried coconut branches were determined by using the bomb calorimeter along with the data of moisture content. The calorific values were noticed to be indirectly proportional to the moisture content. The calorific values (kJ/kg) of the sample as a function of the moisture content is correlated with correlation coefficient (R2) was 0.96. Ten out of fifteen specimens collected were shown to have moisture content in the range of 10% to 30%. With this moisture content, the amount of...

Energy potential of residual maize biomass at different spacings and nitrogen doses 64
Ambrosio,Rodrigo; Pauletti,Volnei; Barth,Gabriel; Povh,Fabrício Pinheiro; Silva,Dimas Agostinho da; Blum,Hilbert.
ABSTRACT Agricultural residual biomass is an important source of energy, and its production and quality vary according to the crop management. This study aimed to assess the effects of plant distribution and nitrogen fertilization on the energy production potential of the biomass of maize cultivated under no tillage. The field experiment was installed in southeast Brazil using five nitrogen rates (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg ha-1) and two inter-row spacings (0.4 and 0.8 m). Grain yield, residual biomass productivity, and bioenergy potential in different parts of the plant (grain, stalk+leaf, husk, and cob) were assessed. No change in grain yield was observed using narrow row spacing. Stalk+leaf and husk productivity was higher using 0.8 m than using 0.4 m...

Storage of caatinga forest biomass to improve the quality of wood for energy 65
Brand,Martha Andreia; Lacerda,Stephenson Ramalho; Oliveira,Juliana de; Lopes,Gisele Paim Ribeiro Domingues; Casagrande,Nayara Bergamo.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of forest biomass energy, coming from the Caatinga, for different storage times in the field. The study was conducted in southern Piauí, between January and February (rainy season). Samples were collected containing branches and trunks of various species, and samples of branches and trunks separately in 5 sample units of 20x20m. Samples were evaluated in the general state freshly harvested and samples of branches and logs after 15 and 30 days of storage in piles in the field. The analyzes carried out were: moisture content on wet basis, ash content and calorific value. Moisture content of freshly harvested biomass ranged from 39% with two days after cutting to 79% in biomass cut and left distributed in the...

INCREASED ENERGY COGENERATION IN THE SUGAR-ENERGY SECTOR WITH THE USE OF SUGARCANE STRAW, ELECTRIFICATION OF DRIVES, AND HIGH-DRAINAGE ROLLERS IN THE EXTRACTION 70
Santos,Paulo S. B. dos; Ramos,Ricardo A. V..
ABSTRACT The sugar-energy sector stands out in the production of electrical energy in the Brazilian energy matrix. The updating of Law 9,427 allowed increasing the limit of power injected in the transmission or distribution systems of existing projects from 30 to 50 MW, encouraging studies of expansion and/or implementation of new cogeneration projects. This study analyzed technologies to enhance energy cogeneration in a plant that sells about 27 MW of surplus power. For this, were studied the use of straw, electrification of drives by steam turbines, and high-drainage rollers (lotus mill roller), which allows reducing bagasse moisture, increasing its lower calorific value (LCV) and, consequently, electrical energy generation. Mass and energy balances in...

ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND PHYSICOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BURITI PULP (Mauritia flexuosa) COLLECTED IN THE CITY OF DIAMANTINO – MTS1 94
SANDRI,DAYANE DE OLIVEIRA; XISTO,ANDREA LUIZA RAMOS PEREIRA; RODRIGUES,ERIKA CRISTINA; MORAIS,ELAINE CARVALHO DE; BARROS,WANDER MIGUEL DE.
ABSTRACT Buriti is a fruit with potential for economic exploitation due to its nutritional components; however, there are few studies about their post-harvest characteristics. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the physicochemical characteristics and analyze the antioxidant activity of Buriti pulp. Fruits were harvested at full maturity stage, sanitized, pulped and stored under refrigeration until freezing. Then, pulp was submitted to the following analyses: moisture, protein, total carbohydrates and reducing carbohydrates, ashes, lipids, crude fiber, water activity, titratable acidity (TA), pH, color, ß-carotene, a-carotene, antioxidant activity and total energy value (TEV). Analyses were performed in triplicate, and the mean, standard...
