The Antifungal Activity of Naphthoquinones: An Integrative Review Anais da ABC (AABC)
FUTURO,DÉBORA O.; FERREIRA,PATRICIA G.; NICOLETTI,CAROLINE D.; BORBA-SANTOS,LUANA P.; SILVA,FERNANDO C. DA; ROZENTAL,SONIA; FERREIRA,VITOR FRANCISCO.
ABSTRACT Naphthoquinones are the most commonly occurring type of quinones in nature. They are a diverse family of secondary metabolites that occur naturally in plants, lichens and various microorganisms. This subgroup is constantly being expanded through the discovery of new natural products and by the synthesis of new compounds via innovative techniques. Interest in quinones and the search for new biological activities within the members of this class have intensified in recent years, as evidenced by the evaluation of the potential antimicrobial activities of quinones. Among fungi of medical interest, yeasts of the genus Candida are of extreme importance due to their high frequency of colonization and infection in humans. The objective of this review is...

Candidemia epidemiology and susceptibility profile in the largest Brazilian teaching hospital complex BJID
Motta,Adriana Lopes; Almeida,Gisele Madeira Duboc de; Almeida Júnior,João Nóbrega de; Burattini,Marcelo Nascimento; Rossi,Flávia.
INTRODUCTION: Although the spectrum of fungi causing bloodstream fungal infections continues to expand, Candida spp. remains responsible for the majority of these cases. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the candidemia epidemiology, species distribution and antifungal susceptibility patterns at a Brazilian tertiary teaching public hospital with 2,500 beds. METHODS: Records from the microbiology laboratory were used to identify patients with positive blood cultures during 2006. The in vitro activity of amphotericin B, caspofungin, itraconazole, fluconazole, voricanozole, and posaconazole were determined using the Etest method. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-six cases of candidemia were identified and 100 strains were available for...

Antifungal activity of the lemongrass oil and citral against Candida spp. BJID
Silva,Cristiane de Bona da; Guterres,Sílvia S.; Weisheimer,Vanessa; Schapoval,Elfrides E.S..
Superficial mycoses of the skin are among the most common dermatological infections, and causative organisms include dermatophytic, yeasts, and non-dermatophytic filamentous fungi. The treatment is limited, for many reasons, and new drugs are necessary. Numerous essential oils have been tested for both in vitro and in vivo antifungal activity and some pose much potential as antifungal agents. By using disk diffusion assay, we evaluated the antifungal activity of lemongrass oil and citral against yeasts of Candida species (Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis). This study showed that lemongrass oil and citral have a potent in vitro activity against Candida spp.

Yeasts isolated from clinical samples of AIDS patients BJM
Neves,Rejane Pereira; Cavalcanti,Maria Auxiliadora de Q.; Chaves,Guilherme Maranhão; Magalhães,Oliane M.C..
In order to investigate yeasts in oropharyngeal secretion, urine, sputum and inguinal scales from AIDS patients, clinical samples were collected from one hundred patients interned in the Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Sector of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco and in Hospital Universitário Osvaldo Cruz of the Universidade de Pernambuco. Yeasts were isolated from seventy-two out of one hundred and eight clinical samples. The isolated yeasts were: Candida albicans (sixty-two isolates), Candida tropicalis (four isolates), Candida glabrata (two isolates), Candida parapsilosis (two isolates), Candida krusei (one isolate) and Trichosporon pullulans (one isolate).

Vaginal lactobacilli as potential probiotics against Candida spp BJM
Gil,Natalia F.; Martinez,Rafael C.R.; Gomes,Bruna C.; Nomizo,Auro; Martinis,Elaine C. P. De.
Urogenital infections affect millions of people every year worldwide. The treatment of these diseases usually requires the use of antimicrobial agents, and more recently, the use of probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) cultures for the management of vaginal infections has been extensively studied. In this work, 11 vaginal lactobacilli isolates, previously obtained from healthy patients, were studied to screen microorganisms with probiotic properties against Candida spp. The LAB were tested for their ability of auto-aggregation, coaggregation with C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, and C. tropicalis, adhesion to Caco-2 epithelial cells and production of lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). All lactobacilli isolates tested were able to auto-aggregate...

Identification of Candida spp. by phenotypic tests and PCR BJM
Marinho,Sandra Aparecida; Teixeira,Alice Becker; Santos,Otávio Silveira; Cazanova,Ricardo Flores; Ferreira,Carlos Alexandre Sanchez; Cherubini,Karen; Oliveira,Sílvia Dias de.
The correct identification of Candida species is of great importance, as it presents prognostic and therapeutical significance, allowing an early and appropriate antifungical therapy. The purpose of this study was to identify isolates of Candida spp. from oral mucosa of 38 patients with oral candidosis evaluated in 2004 by phenotypic methods and PCR, discriminating C. albicans from the other Candida species. The tests used for phenotypic analysis were germ-tube and chlamydoconidia production, culture in CHROMAgarTM Candida, carbohydrate assimilation test, growth at 45ºC and culture in Tween 80 agar. Genotypic confirmation was performed by PCR. Phenotypic tests showed that 63.2% strains formed germ-tubes, 73.7% produced chlamydoconidia, and 63.2% showed...

Cleff,Marlete Brum; Lima,Alzira Pacheco de; Faria,Renata Osório de; Meinerz,Ana Raquel Mano; Antunes,Tatiana de Ávila; Araújo,Flávia Biasoli de; Nascente,Patrícia da Silva; Nobre,Márcia de Oliveira; Meireles,Mário Carlos Araújo.
Yeasts are commensal organisms found in the skin, genital and gastrointestinal tracts, and other mucosa in mammalians. Candida spp has been frequently isolated from domestic and sylvan animals. Yeast isolation from vaginal mucus is frequent in women, especially of Candida genus. In canine females, however, studies about vaginal fungal microbiota are rare and the connection with estrous cycle is unknown. The purpose of this study was to isolate yeast 5 of Candida genus from healthy canine females and identify the isolated species, establishing their connection with estrous cycle phases. Two hundred twenty-four samples taken from vaginal mucus of 14 canine females were analyzed in this study. Candida spp was observed in 83 (37%) from these samples; nine...
