Comparison of three laboratorial tests for diagnosis of canine parvovirus infection Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,M.M.O.; Castro,T.X.; Costa,E.M.; Trancoso,T.A.L.; Mendes-de-Almeida,F.; Labarthe,N.V.; Cubel Garcia,R.C.N..
The aim of this study was to evaluate the rapid tests currently used for canine parvovirus (CPV) diagnosis: hemagglutination test (HA), enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A total of 112 fecal samples collected from diarrheic puppies up to one year of age were tested. The EIA was able to detect CPV antigen in 44 samples. By HA, 32 samples tested highly positive with titers >128, eight tested weakly positive (titers 32 and 64) and 72 were negative (titers <16). Using PCR, 57 samples were found positive including 13 EIA-negative and 19 HA-negative samples. The best correlation was observed between EIA and PCR (88.4%). These tests were able to detect all types of CPV, including CPV-2c. Considering that 23%-33% of dogs...

Canine Parvovirus infection in puppies with gastroenteritis in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 1995 to 1997 Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
CUBEL GARCIA,Rita de Cássia Nasser; PINTO,Ana Maria Vianna; COSTA,Alexandre de Pina; MACIEL,Bianca Mendes; OLIVEIRA,Ledy do Horto dos Santos; NASCIMENTO,Jussara Pereira do; SANTOS,Adão Onofre dos; CASTRO,Maria Cristina Nobre e; WILLI,Liliane Maria Valentim; LABARTHE,Norma Vollmer.
Fecal samples from puppies with gastroenteritis less than 7 months old were examined for canine parvovirus infection (CPV-2) by hemagglutination (HA) and subsequent hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) tests. Forty of the 79 samples collected from April 1995 to June 1997 were found to be positive. About 70% of these samples were from 2 to 4 months old puppies, age in which they are at increased risk of developing CPV-2 infection, despite of vaccination. No seasonal distribution of canine parvovirus cases was found and it was supported by the results of a retrospective study realized at PolVet-UFF, which showed that gastroenteritis cases occurred throughout the year, for a six-year period (1991-97) in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro.

Simultaneous canine distemper encephalitis and canine parvovirus infection with distemper-associated cardiac necrosis in a pup Ciência Rural
Headley,Selwyn Arlington; Saito,Taís Berelli.
Simultaneous infection of canine distemper virus and canine parvovirus associated with distemper myocardial degeneration and necrosis is described in a pup. The dog demonstrated myoclonus, nystagmus, enamel hypoplasia, abdominal pustules, and bilateral corneal ulceration clinically. Demyelinating encephalitis, myocardial degeneration and necrosis with mineralization, and necrosis, hemorrhage and fusion of intestinal villi were observed. The lesions observed in this dog are characteristic of a dual infection of canine distemper virus and canine parvovirus.
