Manipulation of the fatty acids composition of poultry meat and giblets by dietary inclusion of two oil sources and conjugated linoleic acid Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Zanini,S.F.; Vicente,E.; Colnago,G.L.; Pessotti,B.M.S.; Silva,M.A..
The effect of dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in association with two vegetable oil sources on the fatty acids of meat and giblets of broiler chickens was evaluated. Two hundred 21-day-old broiler chickens were distributed in a completely randomized factorial design 2 x 5 (two oil sources, soybean or canola oil; and five levels of CLA, 0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0g/kg). The addition of CLA to the diet resulted in an increase (P<0.05) in CLA deposition in the analyzed tissues. CLA supplementation also reduced (P<0.05) the rate of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids in thigh, breast, heart, and gizzard. There was interaction of CLA x oil source (P<0.05). The intake of soybean oil, associated with increasing CLA, resulted in an increase...

Effects of dietary lipids on renal function of aged rats BJMBR
Valente Gamba,C.; Zeraib Caraviello,A.; Matsushita,A.; Alves,G.M.; Nunes da Silva,L.; Nascimento Gomes,G.; Zaladek Gil,F..
Normal aging is accompanied by renal functional and morphological deterioration and dietetic manipulation has been used to delay this age-related decline. We examined the effects of chronic administration of diets containing 5% lipid-enriched diet (LD, w/w) on renal function of rats at different ages. Three types of LD were tested: canola oil, fish oil and butter. Mean systemic tail-cuff blood pressure and glycemia remained within the normal range whatever the age and the diet of the animals. Proteinuria began to rise from the 8th month in the groups ingesting LD, while in the control group it increased significantly (above 10 mg/24 h) only after the 10th month. With age, a significant and progressive decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal...

STABILITY OF OILS HEATED BY MICROWAVE: UV - SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC EVALUATION Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
VIEIRA,Thais M. F. S.; REGITANO-D’ARCE,Marisa A. B..
The effects of microwave heating on the oxidative stability of refined canola, corn and soybean oils were determined by absorptivity in the UV spectrum and by chemical analysis (peroxide and acid values). Samples were heated in a microwave oven (800 W, 2,450 MHz) for 0 to 36 min. Microwave heating produced oxidative degradation in the three oils. Absorptivity at 232 and 270 nm increased gradually with an increase in microwave exposure time (0-36 min) for canola, corn and soybean oils. Values of absorptivity at 232 nm increased from 4.812, 3.568 and 4.183 to 10.579, 12.874 and 15.950 after 36 min of heating canola, corn and soybean oil, respectively. The absorptivity at 232nm, due to the formation of conjugated dienes, was a good index for measuring the...

Color of smoked loin from animals fed with bioactive compounds added to forage PAB
Guzek,Dominika; Glabska,Dominika; Sakowska,Anna; Wierzbicka,Agnieszka.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the breed and of the addition of bioactive substances to forage on the color of smoked pork loin. Two pig breeds (Polish Landrace and the crossbreed Polish Landrace x Duroc), three types of bioactive components (organic selenium; 2% of canola oil and 1% of flaxseed oil; and 2% of flaxseed oil and 1% of canola oil), and a control treatment were evaluated. Computer image analysis included the color assessment of muscle, fat, connective tissues, and smoked loin surface. For Polish Landrace, selenium supplementation caused higher values of red, green, and blue color components of the muscle tissue, which were lower for the crossbreed. However, there was no difference in the color components of loin...

Are Country of Origin and Non-GM Premiums Invariant to Experimental Auction Structure? AgEcon
Volinskiy, Dmitriy; Adamowicz, Wiktor L.; Veeman, Michele M.; Srivastava, Lorie.
A revealed preference auction experiment is used to elicit values for two attributes, one relating to genetic modification and the other to country of origin of the food product, canola oil. A premium for a non-GM canola oil is found to approximate CA$0.4 to $0.6 per litre. Auction format effects are found and hypotheses as to why these may occur are suggested.

Japanese Consumers’ Perceptions on and Willingness to Pay for Credence Attributes Associated with Canola Oil AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang; Chen, Kevin Z.; Yoshida, Kentaro.
In this study we found that Japanese consumers value the conventional health claim “low in saturated fat” more than the relatively newer claims, such as “high in oleic acid.” In addition, consumers do not prefer oil with genetically modified ingredients or oil that is not domestically produced, but they are willing to pay extra for “organic” or “functional food” features. We also found that the scope and source of information on these credence attributes may also affect consumers’ choices and willingness to pay and that the effects may not be completely consistent with what one would expect.

Bargains or Rip-offs? Reference Price Effects in Conjoint Stated Demand AgEcon
Hu, Wuyang.
This study incorporates reference point effects into a stated choice survey of consumer demand for food with credence attributes. Parametric tests can be applied to the utility function to examine the existence of reference price effects. Results are consistent with prospect theory in that consumers exhibit strong and nonlinear reference price effects, with cheaper prices receiving less decision weight than higher prices. The underlying utility function is concave over lowered prices and convex over increased prices, with diminishing sensitivity in both domains. The study, however, did not find experience or consumers' attitudes to be significant in explaining reference price effects.

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF IMPORT DEMAND FOR CANOLA OIL IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon
Lordkipanidze, Nazibrola; Epperson, James E.; Ames, Glenn C.W..
The study analyzes the impacts of economic and noneconomic factors on import demand for canola oil. The import demand pattern for canola oil in the United States is influenced by changes in the world's oilseeds market and government oilseeds programs and policies, including tariffs and subsidies. The U.S. import demand for canola oil was specified as a function of its own import price, prices of substitute edible vegetable oils (soybean oil and palm oil), disposable personal income, the Canadian-U.S. (Missing one table)

Performance of layers fed diets containing different oils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Lelis,GR; Silva,MD da; Tavernari,F de C; Albino,LFT; Rostagno,HS.
A trial was carried out at the Animal Science Department of the Federal University of Viçosa to evaluate the performance of heavy and light layers. During four periods of twenty-eight days, 432 layers in the second production cycle, being 216 Hy Line W36 (light birds) and 216 Hy Line Brown (heavy birds), were used. A completely randomized experimental design with a 1+(4x2x2) factorial arrangement (one control treatment, four oil sources, two inclusion levels, and two genetic lines) with four replicates of six birds per experimental unit, was applied. The treatments consisted of diets containing 16.5% crude protein, formulated to supply the nutritional requirements, and the inclusion of each oil source at 2 or 4%. Soybean, canola, linseed and fish oils were...
