Agricultural research in INIFAP (National Institute for Agricultural, Livestock and Forestry Research of Mexico) has been traditionally oriented to increase yields. Under this approach research objectives have been directed to obtain more kilograms of grains per hectare, more milk liters per cow, more meat per animal, etc. As national and international agricultural context has been changed, new approaches have been included and topics like environment and market trends are now incorporated to INIFAP's research activity. The market approach has been taken into account in an implicit way in some research projects of INIFAP. However, it is necessary to pay more attention to this topic because as it is known, consumers orient type and characteristics of goods...

O melão é uma das frutas frescas mais exportadas pelo Brasil com crescente área plantada no Estado de Mato Grosso. Em razão de se encontrar associada aos aspectos quantitativos e qualitativos do fruto, a adubação nitrogenada e a potássica são fatores de destaque na produção do meloeiro. Objetivou-se, através deste estudo, avaliar as características produtivas e qualitativas dos frutos de melão rendilhado cultivado em casa de vegetação em função de doses de nitrogênio e potássio. O estudo foi conduzido no período de abril a agosto de 2012 em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 5 x 5, com quatro repetições. Avaliação do padrão de visitação de Apis mellifera em três cultivares de meloeiro, em Petrolina-PE, Brasil Rev. Bras. Frutic.

Para o cultivo do meloeiro, a presença de abelhas no período de florescimento é fundamental para garantir a polinização e incrementar a produção de frutos. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho teve por finalidade verificar se há diferenças no comportamento de visitas e no recurso floral forrageado por Apis mellifera, em três cultivares de meloeiro. O trabalho foi desenvolvido no Campo Experimental da Embrapa Semiárido, em Petrolina-PE, com as cultivares do tipo amarelo (BRS Araguaia), pele-de-sapo (P-33) e cantaloupe (CAN-4), com observações da biologia floral, morfologia e comportamento de A. mellifera no período das 05h às 18h. ABSTRACT We investigated the foraging pattern of A. mellifera in five commercial types of melon (Yellow, Cantaloupe, Charentais, Galia and Piel de Sapo) grown side by side. We also observed if this bee species can discriminate between flowers of the five melon types and if it shows preference for flowers of any of them. Results showed that the bees visit flowers of all types of melon throughout the day collecting pollen and nectar in similar foraging patterns. However, they visited significantly more flowers of the Cantaloupe type followed by the types Piel de Sapo and Yellow, while the melons type Galia and Charentais were the least visited by the bees. Antagonistic activity of bacterium B. subtilis B076 on nutrient agar medium (NA) to Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli (Aac) isolate KK9 causal agent of bacterial fruit blotch, in the laboratory of Agricultural Biotechnology Research Center for Sustainable Economy Khon Kaen University. The results revealed that the B. subtilis B076 could exhibit the inhibition zone of diameter 1.94 cm. When cultured the bacterium antagonist in nutrient broth (NB) added with 2% glucose, the maximum ratio of heat tolerant cells production (61%) was obtained five days of incubation. Pre- and postharvest attributes of muskmelon cultivars for fresh-cut cubes Ciencia e Investigación Agraria

The choice of the appropriate cultivar is a critical factor for obtaining a successful crop and for satisfying the needs of the industry and consumers. Nine commonly used or recently available varieties of cantaloupe melons (Cucumis melo L. Group Cantalupensis) were evaluated in two locations with the objective of selecting cultivars ad hoc for processing as fresh-cut cubes. Overall, the yield (30 to 45 t ha-1) and quality, including mainly the fruit size and soluble solids concentration (SSC), varied between locations, but the relative performance of cultivars was similar.
