Phylogenetic relationships and the evolution of mimicry in the Chauliognathus yellow-black species complex (Coleoptera: Cantharidae) inferred from mitochondrial COI sequences Genet. Mol. Biol.
Machado,Vilmar; Araujo,Aldo M.; Serrano,José; Galián,José.
The phylogenetic relationships of twelve species of Chauliognathus were investigated by studying the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene. A 678 bp fragment of the COI gene was sequenced to test the hypothesis that the Müllerian mimicry species of the "yellow-black" complex make up a monophyletic clade, separated from species with other colour patterns. The data set was analysed by neighbour-joining, maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood procedures. The results support a single origin of the yellow-black colour pattern during the evolution of the genus, with one main clade formed by Chauliognathus lineatus, C. tetrapunctatus, C. riograndensis, C. flavipes, C. octomaculatus, C. fallax, and another one formed by two species, C. expansus and C sp 1,...

Changing distributions of Cantharidae and Buprestidae within Great Britain (Coleoptera) Naturalis
Alexander, K..
Changing distributions of Cantharidae and Buprestidae within Great Britain (Coleoptera) Data are presented on the distribution of selected species from two coleopteran families chosen to represent a random slice of the British fauna. The species have been chosen as exhibiting extremes of range changes, from declining species, through stable distributions, to expanding species. Examination of this small group of beetles already reveals significant changes, some of which may be related to global climate change. Predictions can be made about which others of these beetle families are likely to show detectable changes in range in the near future.

Morphometric analysis, mimicry, and color polymorphism in five species of Chauliognathus Hentz (Coleoptera, Cantharidae) Zoologia
Machado,Vilmar; Araújo,Aldo M. de; Mosmann,Cleri S..
This study presents data on morphometric variation for length and width of elytra in tive sympatric species of the genus Chauliognathus Hentz, 1830: C. flavipes Fabricius, 1781, C. octomaculatus Pie, 1915, C. expansus Waterhouse, 1878, C. fallax Germar, 1824 and C. lineatus Zwetsch & Machado, 2000. The meaning of this variation is discussed in the light of the theory of mimicry and visual communication between prey and predator. Females are larger than males in all species, except C. expansus. The analysis of variance for length of elytron as well as for width showed that the differences between species are significant for males and females; significant interaction (sex x species) was also found. The similarity in color pattern of these species, as...
