Distinctive Effects of Red Wine and Diet on Haemostatic Cardiovascular Risk Factors Biol. Res.
MEZZANO,DIEGO.
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of Mediterranean-type diet (MD), high-fat diet (HFD), and red wine supplementation on plasma concentration of emergent haemostatic cardiovascular risk factors (HCVRF) and on variables of primary haemostasis (bleeding time, plasma von Willebrand factor and platelet aggregation/secretion). In a controlled prospective intervention study, two groups (21 healthy males each) received either MD or HFD during 90 days. Between days 30-60, both diets were supplemented with 240 ml/day of red wine. After adjusting by baseline values, MD was associated with: lower plasma fibrinogen (p =0.03), factor VIIc (p=0.034) and factor VIIIc (p=0.0057); higher levels of protein S (p=0.013); longer bleeding time (p=0.017); and...

Comparison of apolipoprotein E polymorphism and other atherosclerotic risk factors in two portuguese populations: the influence of insularity BABT
Lopes,Paula Alexandra; Gaspar,Gisela; Napoleão,Patrícia; Santos,Maria Cristina; Pavão,Maria Leonor; Viegas-Crespo,Ana Maria.
The main objective of this study was to investigate the apolipoprotein (apo) E genotypes in Portuguese populations from mainland (Lisbon city) and from San Miguel Island, Azores' Archipelago (Ponta Delgada city) and to look for differences between these particular sites in apparently healthy subjects. Also, subjects with clinical diagnosis of atherosclerotic disease were investigated in San Miguel Island. In Lisbon, the genotypes distribution was: epsilon3/epsilon 3 > epsilon 3/epsilon 4 > epsilon 2/epsilon 3 > epsilon 4/epsilon 4 while that, for Ponta Delgada and regardless the health condition, was: epsilon 3/epsilon 3 > epsilon 2/epsilon 3 > epsilon 3/epsilon 4. Within Ponta Delgada control group, females and males had...

Endothelial function and cardiovascular diseases in HIV infected patient BJID
Andrade,Ana Cristina O.; Cotter,Bruno R..
The HIV epidemic has dramatically changed the paradigm for the development of drug therapy in the last 15 years. The goal is now not only to provide an effective reduction of plasma viremia , but also to reconstitute the immune deficiency due to the progression of the disease. Significant problems with the metabolism of sugars and lipids lead to the appearance of well-documented disorders such as insulin resistance, abnormalities in lipid metabolism and lipodystrophy in those patients on prolonged therapy with antiretrovirals. The question of whether or not HAART-associated lipid disorders contribute to the premature development of coronary artery disease is of major importance for the HIV community. Endothelial injury is associated with disease-related...

Cahn,P; Leite,O; Rosales,A; Cabello,R; Alvarez,CA; Seas,C; Carcamo,C; Cure-Bolt,N; L'Italien,Gp; Mantilla,P; Deibis,L; Zala,C; Suffert,T.
OBJECTIVE: Determine the prevalence of metabolic abnormalities (MA) and estimate the 10-year risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Latin American HIV-infected patients receiving highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). METHODS: A cohort study to evaluate MA and treatment practices to reduce CVD has been conducted in seven Latin American countries. Adult HIV-infected patients with at least one month of HAART were enrolled. Baseline data are presented in this analysis. RESULTS: A total of 4,010 patients were enrolled. Mean age (SD) was 41.9 (10) years; median duration of HAART was 35 (IQR: 10-51) months, 44% received protease inhibitors. The prevalence of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome was 80.2% and 20.2%, respectively. The overall 10-year...

Sodium taste threshold in children and its relationship to blood pressure BJMBR
Arguelles,J.; Diaz,J.J.; Malaga,I.; Perillan,C.; Costales,M.; Vijande,M..
Popular science has emphasized the risks of high sodium intake and many studies have confirmed that salt intake is closely related to hypertension. The present mini-review summarizes experiments about salt taste sensitivity and its relationship with blood pressure (BP) and other variables of clinical and familial relevance. Children and adolescents from control parents (N = 72) or with at least one essential hypertensive (EHT) parent (N = 51) were investigated. Maternal questionnaires on eating habits and vomiting episodes were collected. Offspring, anthropometric, BP, and salt taste sensitivity values were recorded and blood samples analyzed. Most mothers declared that they added "little salt" when cooking. Salt taste sensitivity was inversely correlated...

Cardiovascular risk factors in a population of Brazilian schoolchildren BJMBR
Rodrigues,A.N.; Moyses,M.R.; Bissoli,N.S.; Pires,J.G.P.; Abreu,G.R..
Epidemiological and clinical evidence suggests that a judicious diet, regular physical activity and blood pressure (BP) monitoring must start in early childhood to minimize the impact of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. This study was designed to evaluate BP and metabolic parameters of schoolchildren from Vitória, Espírito Santo State, Brazil, and correlate them with cardiovascular risk factors. The study was conducted on 380 students aged 10-14 years (177 boys, 203 girls) enrolled in public schools. Baseline measurements included body mass index, BP and heart rate. The students were submitted to exercise spirometry on a treadmill. VO2max was obtained from exercise testing to voluntary exhaustion. Fasting serum total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, HDL-C,...

TP53 codon 72 polymorphism as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in a Brazilian population BJMBR
Smith,M.A.C.; Silva,M.D.A.; Cendoroglo,M.S.; Ramos,L.R.; Araujo,L.M.Q.; Labio,R.W.; Burbano,R.R.; Chen,E.S.; Payão,S.L.M..
TP53, a tumor suppressor gene, has a critical role in cell cycle, apoptosis and cell senescence and participates in many crucial physiological and pathological processes. Identification of TP53 polymorphism in older people and age-related diseases may provide an understanding of its physiology and pathophysiological role as well as risk factors for complex diseases. TP53 codon 72 (TP53:72) polymorphism was investigated in 383 individuals aged 66 to 97 years in a cohort from a Brazilian Elderly Longitudinal Study. We investigated allele frequency, genotype distribution and allele association with morbidities such as cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, obesity, neoplasia, low cognitive level (dementia), and depression. We also determined the...

Late-life depression, heart failure and frontal white matter hyperintensity: a structural magnetic resonance imaging study BJMBR
Almeida,J.R.C.; Alves,T.C.T.F.; Wajngarten,M.; Rays,J.; Castro,C.C.; Cordeiro,Q.; Telles,R.M.S.; Fraguas,R.J.; Busatto,G.F..
The relevance of the relationship between cardiac disease and depressive symptoms is well established. White matter hyperintensity, a bright signal area in the brain on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans, has been separately associated with cardiovascular risk factors, cardiac disease and late-life depression. However, no study has directly investigated the association between heart failure, major depressive symptoms and the presence of hyperintensities. Using a visual assessment scale, we have investigated the frequency and severity of white matter hyperintensities identified by magnetic resonance imaging in eight patients with late-life depression and heart failure, ten patients with heart failure without depression, and fourteen healthy...

Peroxiredoxin isoforms are associated with cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus BJMBR
El Eter,E.; Al-Masri,A.A..
The production of oxygen free radicals in type 2 diabetes mellitus contributes to the development of complications, especially the cardiovascular-related ones. Peroxiredoxins (PRDXs) are antioxidant enzymes that combat oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between the levels of PRDX isoforms (1, 2, 4, and 6) and cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Fifty-three patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (28F/25M) and 25 healthy control subjects (7F/18M) were enrolled. We measured the plasma levels of each PRDX isoform and analyzed their correlations with cardiovascular risk factors. The plasma PRDX1, -2, -4, and -6 levels were higher in the diabetic patients than in the healthy control subjects. PRDX2...
