Sivilai Sirimungkararat; Weerasak Saksirirat; Duenpen Wongsorn; Sumeth Maskhao.
Eri silkworm (Samia ricini D.) is an important wild silkmoth of world textile industry, this study experiments on the increasing yield of eri silkworm using 3 commercial lines of castor (Ricinus communis) TCO101, 207 and 208 in comparison with indigenous castor line (InL) and CaKKU1 line. The eri silkworm fed with each line had similar period of life cycle lasting 52-72 days. Survival percentage of eri silkworm when fed with castor TCO101 and CaKKU1 was the highest with 93.33% (larva-adult) and statistically different (P<0.05) to others. Using TCO101, the eri silkworm yields such as 5th instar larval weight, fresh cocoon weight, pupa weight, shell weight, percent of cocoon shell, total shell weight, fresh cocoon weight/10,000 larvae were 8.2530 g, 3.3799...

STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING THE VALUE CHAIN OF CASTOR AS AN INDUSTRIAL RAW MATERIAL IN NIGERIA CIGR Journal
Ibeagha, Okwuchukwu Alan.
Castor is possibly one of Nigeria’s most under-appreciated assets. Its potential as an industrial raw material can be fully realized by a critical appraisal of its value chain. This article reviews Castor value chain in Nigeria and identifies the constraints and strategies for improving its use as an industrial raw material. The strategies proposed can serve as a guide for castor value addition among operators and policy makers in a bid to maximize castor industrial potentials. A review of the uses of castor after value addition indicated that it can be used in over 10 industries namely; agriculture, food, paper, electronics and telecommunication, textile, pharmaceutical, Cosmetic and Perfume, Paint, Lubricant, Plastic and Rubber industries. Constraints...

Soil amendment with chopped or ground dry leaves of six species of plants for the control of Meloidogyne javanica in tomato under greenhouse conditions Ciência Rural
Lopes,Everaldo Antônio; Ferraz,Silamar; Ferreira,Paulo Afonso; Freitas,Leandro Grassi de; Dallemole-Giaretta,Rosangela.
Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of soil amendment with chopped (1cm²) or ground (1mm sieve) dry leaves of assa-peixe (Vernonia polyanthes), lemon-grass (Cymbopogon citratus), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora), castor (Ricinus communis), mango (Mangifera indica) or neem (Azadirachta indica) for the control Meloidogyne javanica. Into the soil (Yellow red oxisol) of each pot were added leaves (5g kg-1 of soil) and 5,000 eggs of the nematode. After seven days, one tomato seedling "Santa Cruz Kada" was transplanted to each pot. The tomato root weight, galls and eggs/root system were determined 60 days after transplant. None of the soil amendments reduced gall or eggs, when applied as leaf pieces. However, all tested plant species...
