West African rainfall is characterized by a strong variability, both at decadal and interannual scales. In order to quantify the hydrological impacts of such a variability, analysis of rainfall patterns at fine scales is highly essential. This diagnostic study aims to characterize the Sudanese rainfall regime at hydrological scales, using a raingauge data set collected on the upper Oueme River catchment (Benin) between 1950 and 2002. A long-term drought is observed during the 1970s and 1980s, as in the Sahel. However, the interannual variability remains significant in the Sudanese region. The study of the seasonal cycle, based on the distinction between the oceanic and continental monsoon regimes, shows that the majority of rainfall changes occur in the... |

During rainstorms, watersheds can introduce large amounts of faecal pollution into the rivers and sea, leading to shellfish contamination. In this study, we assessed Escherichia coli fluxes from a catchment, and their impact on estuarine water quality, using two assembled models. For the catchment, the agro-hydrological model SWAT was implemented integrating land uses, soil, topography, rainfall and other climatic data on Daoulas watershed (France). Initially, the SWAT model was calibrated and validated for river flow rates, and results were found satisfactory. Subsequently, different faecal contamination sources were integrated into the model: point sources (WWTP discharges into rivers) and non-point sources (manure spreading on fields). During rainfall... |

The coastline has many activities related to water quality such as bathing activities. Coastal catchments are known to be source of microbial input to the marine environment, their flows and runoff bringing important quantities of sediment, bacteria and other particles. Thus, a network of monitoring and modeling may be necessary to prevent economic losses such as a closure of beaches due to contamination. Hence, within the framework of project GIRAC, a modeling of river and E. coli flow in the Sainte-Anne catchment was developed. To implement the model AVSWAT on the catchment, a data collection (stream gauging, E. coli analyses) and work on GIS was necessary. The aim of this study is the hydrological and microbiological characterization of the catchment.... |

Nitrogen loading to the Bassin d'Arcachon coastal lagoon (SW France) was evaluated by studying land-use and nitrogen output in its 3001 km(2) catchment. At present, the catchment is dominated by forestry (79%), while intensive agriculture occupies 9% of the surface. The N-output of two hydrological subunits, i.e. the Tagon subunit dominated by pine forestry and the Arriou 11 subunit comprising both forestry and intensive agriculture, were monitored for a seven year period (1996-2002). From these observations it was calculated that forestry contributes on average 1.6 kg total N ha(-1) yr(-1), which is dominated by organic nitrogen (DON+PON are 70% of N). On an areal basis, intensive agriculture contributes 26 times more than forestry, i.e. 41.6 kg total N... |

The objective of this work was to compare methodologies for the automatic generation of limits and drainage networks, using a geographical information system for basins of low relief variation, such as the Dourados catchment area. Various data/processes were assessed, especially the ArcHydro and AVSWAT interfaces used to process 50 m resolution DTMs formed from the interpolation of digitalized contour lines using ArcInfo, ArcView and Spring GIS, and a 90 m resolution SRTM DTM acquired by interferometry radar. Their accuracy was estimated based upon the pre-processing of small basic sub-basin units of different relief variations, before applying the best combinations to the entire Dourados basin. The accuracy of the automatic stream network generation and... |
