Mechanisms to Improve Integrative Research at the Science-Policy Interface for Sustainable Catchment Management Ecology and Society
Macleod, Christopher (Kit) J. A.; North Wyke Research, Devon, UK; kit.macleod@bbsrc.ac.uk; Blackstock, Kirsty L.; ;; Haygarth, Phil M.; ;.
Greater integration between researchers and policy makers is required to provide an evidence base that is transparent, integrated, and adaptive to support the complexities of sustainable catchment management. Opening-up and closing-down mechanisms are equally important in creating and establishing such an evidence base. We provide examples of both types based on our recent research and knowledge-transfer activities at the science-policy interface. Through our coordination role for the United Kingdom government we provide opening up physical and virtual forums for researchers and government science and policy staff to learn about and assess the gaps and uncertainties of the evidence base. Closing-down mechanisms are vital to policy cycles, in that they...

Seasonal cycle and interannual variability of rainfall at hydrological scales. The West African monsoon in a Sudanese climate ArchiMer
Le Lay, Matthieu; Galle, Sylvie.
West African rainfall is characterized by a strong variability, both at decadal and interannual scales. In order to quantify the hydrological impacts of such a variability, analysis of rainfall patterns at fine scales is highly essential. This diagnostic study aims to characterize the Sudanese rainfall regime at hydrological scales, using a raingauge data set collected on the upper Oueme River catchment (Benin) between 1950 and 2002. A long-term drought is observed during the 1970s and 1980s, as in the Sahel. However, the interannual variability remains significant in the Sudanese region. The study of the seasonal cycle, based on the distinction between the oceanic and continental monsoon regimes, shows that the majority of rainfall changes occur in the...

Evaluation des proliferations d'algues vertes sur le littoral breton en juin 1994 ArchiMer
Piriou, Jean-yves; Annezo, Jean-pierre.
During June 1994, 44 beaches with "green-tides" were identified along the coasts of Brittany. Compared to previous years, seaweed amounts accumulated on beaches receiving nitrogen inputs from granitic catchments can be considered stable, contrary to beaches exposed to nutrient fluxes originating from schistous catchments, where an increase of accumulations is observed. This late process can be explained by an increase of nitrogen loadings during periods of heavy rain (late spring 1994) on impervious basement rocks.

Modeling of Faecal Contamination in Water from Catchment to Shellfish Growing Area ArchiMer
Bougeard, Morgane; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Perenne, Nicolas; Le Guyader, Soizick; Pommepuy, Monique.
During rainstorms, watersheds can introduce large amounts of faecal pollution into the rivers and sea, leading to shellfish contamination. In this study, we assessed Escherichia coli fluxes from a catchment, and their impact on estuarine water quality, using two assembled models. For the catchment, the agro-hydrological model SWAT was implemented integrating land uses, soil, topography, rainfall and other climatic data on Daoulas watershed (France). Initially, the SWAT model was calibrated and validated for river flow rates, and results were found satisfactory. Subsequently, different faecal contamination sources were integrated into the model: point sources (WWTP discharges into rivers) and non-point sources (manure spreading on fields). During rainfall...

Caractérisation hydrologique et microbiologique du bassin versant de Sainte Anne (Plouzané) ArchiMer
Belloir, Jerome.
The coastline has many activities related to water quality such as bathing activities. Coastal catchments are known to be source of microbial input to the marine environment, their flows and runoff bringing important quantities of sediment, bacteria and other particles. Thus, a network of monitoring and modeling may be necessary to prevent economic losses such as a closure of beaches due to contamination. Hence, within the framework of project GIRAC, a modeling of river and E. coli flow in the Sainte-Anne catchment was developed. To implement the model AVSWAT on the catchment, a data collection (stream gauging, E. coli analyses) and work on GIS was necessary. The aim of this study is the hydrological and microbiological characterization of the catchment....

Relationship between land-use in the agro-forestry system of les Landes, nitrogen loading to and risk of macro-algal blooming in the Bassin d'Arcachon coastal lagoon (SW France) ArchiMer
De Wit, Rutger; Leibreich, J; Vernier, F; Delmas, F; Beuffe, H; Maison, P; Chossat, J; Laplace Treyture, C; Laplana, R; Clave, V; Torre, M; Auby, Isabelle; Trut, Gilles; Maurer, Daniele; Capdeville, P.
Nitrogen loading to the Bassin d'Arcachon coastal lagoon (SW France) was evaluated by studying land-use and nitrogen output in its 3001 km(2) catchment. At present, the catchment is dominated by forestry (79%), while intensive agriculture occupies 9% of the surface. The N-output of two hydrological subunits, i.e. the Tagon subunit dominated by pine forestry and the Arriou 11 subunit comprising both forestry and intensive agriculture, were monitored for a seven year period (1996-2002). From these observations it was calculated that forestry contributes on average 1.6 kg total N ha(-1) yr(-1), which is dominated by organic nitrogen (DON+PON are 70% of N). On an areal basis, intensive agriculture contributes 26 times more than forestry, i.e. 41.6 kg total N...

Disposition of precipitation: Supply and Demand for Water Use by New Tree Plantations AgEcon
Nordblom, Thomas L.; Finlayson, John D.; Hume, Iain H..
As the greatest rainwater users among all vegetative land covers, tree plantations have been employed strategically to mitigate salinity and water-logging problems. However, large-scale commercial tree plantations in high rainfall areas reduce fresh water inflows to river systems supporting downstream communities, agricultural industries and wetland environmental assets. A bio-economic model was used to estimate economic demand for water by future upstream plantations in a sub-catchment (the 2.8 million ha Macquarie valley in NSW) of the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia. Given four tree-product values, impacts were simulated under two settings: without and with the requirement that permanent water entitlements be purchased from downstream entitlement...

Comparison of methodologies for automatic generation of limits and drainage networks for hidrographic basins AGRIAMBI
Alcaraz,Samantha A.; Sannier,Christophe; Vitorino,Antonio C. T.; Daniel,Omar.
The objective of this work was to compare methodologies for the automatic generation of limits and drainage networks, using a geographical information system for basins of low relief variation, such as the Dourados catchment area. Various data/processes were assessed, especially the ArcHydro and AVSWAT interfaces used to process 50 m resolution DTMs formed from the interpolation of digitalized contour lines using ArcInfo, ArcView and Spring GIS, and a 90 m resolution SRTM DTM acquired by interferometry radar. Their accuracy was estimated based upon the pre-processing of small basic sub-basin units of different relief variations, before applying the best combinations to the entire Dourados basin. The accuracy of the automatic stream network generation and...

Relations between hidrogeomorphic attributes of the Dourados basin-Brazil and their enviromental signficance Agrociencia
Samantha Alcaraz,Omar Daniel; Tadeu-Vitorino,A. Carlos; Sannier,Christophe.
The study of the morphometry within of catchment boundaries allowed to quantify aspect of the fluvial system in relation to geology, geomorphology and hydrology of the basin of Dourados river, Brazil, making possible to analyse the relations between hydrographic and environmental properties like the first step to better understand the processes taking place within the catchment area. The drainage network was described using qualitative and dimensional observations, from which significant quantitative attributes were derived, including interpolated drainage density and drainage frequency. Environmental data such as geology, geomorphology and soils type were acquired to allow an interpretation of their relationships with the drainage network. The...
