Linkages Among Water Vapor Flows, Food Production, and Terrestrial Ecosystem Services Ecology and Society

Global freshwater assessments have not addressed the linkages among water vapor flows, agricultural food production, and terrestrial ecosystem services. We perform the first bottom-up estimate of continental water vapor flows, subdivided into the major terrestrial biomes, and arrive at a total continental water vapor flow of 70,000 km3/yr (ranging from 56,000 to 84,000 km3/yr). Of this flow, 90% is attributed to forests, including woodlands (40,000 km3/yr), wetlands (1400 km3/yr), grasslands (15,100 km3/yr), and croplands (6800 km3/yr). Setting Permit Prices in a Transferable Discharge Permit (TDP) System for Water Quality Management AgEcon

The composite market design is a proposal for a Transferable Discharge Permit (TDP) system which specifically includes agricultural non-point source (NPS) dischargers and addresses both property rights and transaction cost problems. The first step to implementation of a composite market scheme is the estimation of a supply curve for abatement measures in the catchment area. Estimation is performed by combining costs with modeled loss reductions from selected Best Management Practices (BMPs) and then using this information to estimate the supply curve for abatement which in turn can then be used to set permit prices. Developing a Questionnaire for Valuing Changes in Natural Resource Management in the George Catchment, Tasmania AgEcon

review, expert interviews, biophysical modelling and focus group discussions were used to design a Choice Modelling (CM) questionnaire. This questionnaire was used to value changes in natural resource management in the George catchment, Tasmania. This report describes the questionnaire development, the selection of George catchment attributes and the assessment of attribute levels. The (experimental) design and delivery of the questionnaire are also presented.

Evaluating alternatives for mitigating Cryptosporidium risk and generating environmental service benefits in water supply catchments AgEcon

Evaluations of pathogen management options have focussed on assessing relative removal effectiveness as a basis for prioritising alternative management investment decisions. Using a case study of the Myponga catchment, South Australia, this paper presents results of a cost-effectiveness risk analysis of 13 catchment- and treatment-based water quality management alternatives for mitigating Cryptosporidium risk. A range of costs and benefits including set-up and operating costs, farm business costs and benefits, and environmental service benefits are considered in comparing the net cost associated with each management alternative. An Integrated Assessment approach to linking biophysical modelling and economic valuation tools AgEcon

Natural resource management (NRM) typically involves complex decisions that affect a variety of stakeholder values. Efficient NRM, which achieves the greatest net environmental, social and financial benefits, needs to integrate the assessment of environmental impacts with the costs and benefits of investment. Integrated assessment (IA) is one approach that incorporates the several dimensions of catchment NRM, by considering multiple issues and knowledge from various disciplines and stakeholders. Despite the need for IA, there are few studies that integrate biophysical modelling tools with economic valuation.
