Protective role of antioxidant vitamin E and catechin on idarubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats BJMBR
Kalender,S.; Kalender,Y.; Ates,A.; Yel,M.; Olcay,E.; Candan,S..
Idarubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic extensively used in acute leukemia. In the present study we investigated whether vitamin E and catechin can reduce the toxic effects of idarubicin. Vitamin E (200 IU kg-1 week-1), catechin (200 mg kg-1 week-1), idarubicin (5 mg kg-1 week-1), idarubicin + vitamin E (200 IU kg-1 week-1), and idarubicin + catechin (200 mg kg-1 week-1) combinations were given to male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 210 to 230 g (N = 6/group). Idarubicin-treated animals exhibited a decrease in body and heart weight, a decrease in myocardial contractility, and changes in ECG parameters (P<0.01). Catechin + idarubicin- and vitamin E + idarubicin-treated groups exhibited similar alterations, but changes were attenuated in comparison to...

Binding effect of proline-rich-proteins (PRPs) on in vitro antimicrobial activity of the flavonoids BJM
Ansari,Jawaad Ahmed; Naz,Shahina; Tarar,Omer Mukhtar; Siddiqi,Rahmanullah; Haider,Muhammad Samee; Jamil,Khalid.
The interaction of the cyanidin, pelargonidin, catechin, myrecetin and kaempferol with casein and gelatin, as proline rich proteins (PRPs), was studied. The binding constants calculated for both flavonoid-casein and flavonoid-gelatin were fairly large (105–107 M−1) indicating strong interaction. Due to higher proline content in gelatin, the binding constants of flavonoid-gelatin (2.5 × 105–6.2 × 107M−1) were found to be higher than flavonoid-casein (1.2 × 105–5.0 × 107 M−1). All the flavonoids showed significant antibacterial activity against the tested strains. Significant loss in activity was observed due to the complexation with PRPs confirming that binding effectively reduced the concentration of the free flavonoids to be available for antibacterial...

Antibacterial substances from leaves of Protium spruceanum (Burseraceae): in vitro and in silico evaluation BJPS
Amparo,Tatiane Roquete; Rodrigues,Ivanildes Vasconcelos; Seibert,Janaína Brandão; Almeida,Tamires Cunha; Cabral,Vivette Appolinário Rodrigues; Vieira,Paula Melo de Abreu; Brandão,Geraldo Célio; Oliveira,Mauro Lúcio Gonçalves de; Silva,Glenda Nicioli da; Santos,Orlando David Henrique dos; Vieira Filho,Sidney Augusto; Teixeira,Luiz Fernando Medeiros; Souza,Gustavo Henrique Bianco de.
Due to the increase of bacterial resistance, the search for new antibiotics is necessary and the medicinal plants represent its most important source. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial property of extract and fractions from Protium spruceanum leaves, against pathogenic bacteria. By means of diffusion and microdilution assays, the crude extract was active against the nine bacteria tested being the hydromethanolic fraction the most active. During phytochemical procedures, procyanidin (1) and catechin (2) were identified as the main antibacterial constituents of this fraction. In silico results obtained using PASSonline tool indicated 1 and 2 as having good potential to interact with different targets of currently used antibiotics. These...

Phenolic compounds, methylxanthines and antioxidant activity in cocoa mass and chocolates produced from "witch broom disease" resistant and non resistant cocoa cultivars Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Leite,Paula Bacelar; Maciel,Leonardo Fonseca; Opretzka,Luiza Carolina França; Soares,Sergio Eduardo; Bispo,Eliete da Silva.
The "witch broom disease" caused by the fungus called Moniliophthora perniciosa is one of the most important cocoa diseases in Latin America, causing around 70% production reduction in the southern Bahia. In attempt to solve the problem, many cultivars resistant to the disease have been recommended to farmers. On the other hand, the chocolate flavour is composed by many compounds whose formation depends on the genetic background, environment where cocoa is grown and processing operations. Therefore, this work aimed at determining the monomeric phenolic compounds, methylxanthines and antioxidant activity of cocoa mass and dark chocolate from cocoa cultivars resistant to "witch broom disease" and non resistant to the disease. The total phenolic compounds in...

Influence of shooting period and extraction conditions on bioactive compounds in Turkish green tea Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
BALCI,Ferhan; ÖZDEMIR,Feramuz.
Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different extraction temperatures (75, 85 and 95 °C) and times (3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 min) on bioactive compounds in Turkish green tea produced and classified as Turkuaz, Kardelen and Antikyeşil by ÇAYKUR (the Turkish Tea Board) over three shooting periods. Green tea extracts were subjected to analyses of extraction yield, antioxidant capacity, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and the phenolic and flavonoid composition. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents and the antioxidant capacity of samples increased when extraction temperatures and times were increased. Extraction yield, total phenolics, total flavonoids and the antioxidant capacity of the green teas were found in the range of...

A method for fast determination of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin (EC), catechin (C) and caffeine (CAF) in green tea using HPLC Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Saito,Samuel T.; Welzel,Albert; Suyenaga,Edna S.; Bueno,Francie.
Tea has been considered a medicine and a healthy beverage since ancient times, but recently it has received a great deal of attention because of its antioxidant properties. Green tea polyphenols have demonstrated to be an effective chemopreventive agent. Recently, investigators have found that EGCG, one of the green tea catechins, could have anti-HIV effects when bound to CD4 receptor. Many factors can constitute important influences on the composition of tea, such as species, season, age of the leaf, climate, and horticultural practices (soil, water, minerals, fertilizers). This paper presents an HPLC analytical methodology development, using column RP-18 and mobile phase composed by water, acetonitrile, methanol, ethyl acetate, glacial acetic acid...

DEUS,Valterney Lima; CERQUEIRA E SILVA,Mariana Barros de; MACIEL,Leonardo Fonseca; MIRANDA,Lucas Caldeirão Rodrigues; HIROOKA,Elisa Yoko; SOARES,Sérgio Eduardo; FERREIRA,Ederlan de Souza; BISPO,Eliete da Silva.
Abstract This work aimed to evaluate the performance of different drying methods in the development of phenolic compounds, methylxanthines, and antioxidant activity in cocoa bean and to evaluate the presence of ochratoxin A (OTA). Antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH, FRAP, ORAC and β-carotene-linoleic acid assays. Phenolic compounds and methylxanthines were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with an ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV). OTA was determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (UPLC-FLR). It was found that during cocoa drying, there was a reduction in antioxidant activity with reduced phenolic compound content (0.04 mg.g-1 of catechin before drying to 0.02 mg.g-1 after drying) and...

Allelopathy and Allelochemicals of Eragrostis plana (Poaceae) and its Relation with Phenology and Nitrogen Fertilization Planta Daninha
CECCHIN,K.; FAVARETTO,A.; SCHEFFER-BASSO,S.M.; BERTOL,C.D.; CHINI,S.O..
ABSTRACT This study was conducted in order to verify if the phenological stage and the nitrogen fertilization interfere in the allelopathic activity and in the concentration of potentially allelopathic phenolic compounds of tough lovegrass (Eragrostis plana). The assay consisted of a bifactor 3 (0.100 and 200 kg N ha-1) x 2 (harvested in vegetative and reproductive stages), in a split plot design. The N doses constituted the main plot and the phenological stage during the harvest the subplots, resulting in six treatments. The tough lovegrass plants derived from each of the treatments were subjected to allelopathy bioassays, in which aqueous extracts of the aerial parts were applied to lettuce cypselae (Lactuca sativa) and to phytochemicals tests when...
