Comparison of two coprological methods for the veterinary diagnosis of fasciolosis Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Kleiman,F.; Pietrokovsky,S.; Gil,S.; Wisnivesky-Colli,C..
The sensitivity and utility of a standard faecal sedimentation method (FSM) and a modified stool sieving staining method (FSSM), both currently employed for the diagnosis of Fasciola hepatica infection were compared. Faecal samples were obtained from 51 bovines of an endemic area for fasciolosis in Southwestern Argentina. Each sample was placed in a recipient containing 5% formalin. Eight millilitres of the suspension, equivalent to 2g of faeces, were used for each of the two methods tested. The number of eggs found per sample was recorded. The proportion of positive samples obtained by the FSSM (27/51) was significantly higher than that by the FSM (11/51) (P<0.05). The percent of agreement between methods was 41%. Over a total of 27 positive samples...

Bueno,G.M.; Girardi,A.M.; Módolo,T.J.C.; Sabes,A.F.; Oliveira,J.A.; Marques,L.C..
ABSTRACT Due to the scarcity of myelogenous studies in cattle, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and distribution of iopamidol and iohexol contrast agents in calves, in order to determine guidelines for obtaining diagnostic radiographs of spinal cord disorders in these animals. Ten healthy Holstein calves, seven days to two months of age, were divided into two groups, according to the contrast medium applied. Myelographic studies of the spine were performed with the calves in lateral recumbency, with radiographs repeated 20 times during a two-hour period. On the radiographs, the contrast medium was analyzed for opacity, detail of the image, distension of the medullary canal, and progression of the contrast line. After seven days, the...

Profile and regulation of annexin II expression during early embryogenesis in cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Costa,L.F.S.; Machado,M.S.N; Oliveira,J.F.C.; Silva,J.C.; Loguercio,R.S.; Gonçalves,P.B.D..
The presence of annexin II (Ann-II) during the initial stages of bovine embryo development and the regulation of Ann-II expression by retinol and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) were studied. Bovine embryos at different stages of development were produced in vitro on Synthetic Oviductal Fluid (SOF) medium (control group), SOF supplemented with retinol (retinol group; 0.1ng/ml), or IGF-I (IGF-I group; 10ng/ml). The embryos were processed for mRNA extraction, cDNA production and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using Ann-II-specific oligonucleotides. Ann-II was detected in all stages of early embryo development, except for the 16-cell stage. The blastocyst rates were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the group supplemented with retinol (37.8%, 45/119)...

Influence of orchiectomy of seven month old bulls on bronchoalveolar immune function Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bertagnon,H.G.; Batista,C.F.; Santos,B.P. dos; Lima,M.G.B.; Bellinazzi,J.B.; Libera,A.M.M.P. Della.
ABSTRACT The present study evaluated the impact that orchiectomy, a routine but painful intervention in bovine husbandry, can cause on pulmonary immunity. To identify whether orchiectomy can impair lung defense, analyses of serum cortisol concentration and of alveolar macrophage and their function (phagocytosis and respiratory burst) were evaluated. Sixteen Holstein bulls (7 mo old, 250±50kg of body weight BW) were divided in two homogeneous groups - the castrated group and the sham group - and the sample were collected on Days -7, 1 and 7 relative to the day of the procedure. Serum cortisol concentration statistically increased on Days 1 and 7 (D-7: 4,97±1,28ng/ml; D1: 6,35 ±1,10ng/ml; D7: 8,28±1,94ng/ml) after castration and these variables seem to...

Energy expenditure due to forage intake and walking of grazing cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Di Marco,O.N.; Aello,M.S..
The relative increment in daily maintenance requirement by physical activity was estimated in free-grazing cattle. The effects of forage harvesting and walking were measured and expressed as an index in relation to the value of energy expenditure of animals in corrals. All indices were obtained from experiments conducted in Balcarce (Argentina) from 1993 to 1995. Energy expenditure of Aberdeen Angus steers was estimated by the 14C-entry rate technique, on animals standing still in a corral, grazing at two different biting rates or walking at four different speeds. Information on time spent on grazing and distance traveled was obtained from the literature. These estimations indicate that the maintenance cost of cattle in corrals could be increased on...

Ammonia poisoning causes muscular but not liver damage in cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Antonelli,A.C.; Torres,G.A.S.; Soares,P.C.; Mori,C.S.; Sucupira,M.C.A.; Ortolani,E.L..
Twelve steers were intraruminally administered a high dose (0.5g/kg BW) of urea to study the damage effect of ammonia poisoning on liver and/or muscles. Blood samples were collected to determine ammonia and activities of gammaGT, AST and CK. Eleven steers were successfully poisoned and treated properly, but one succumbed. Poisoned cattle showed high concentration of ammonia, and higher activities of AST and CK. The higher the ammonia, the greater were the activities of AST (r=0.59) and CK (r=0.61). The correlation between AST and CK was high and significant (r=0.80), but not between AST and gammaGT (r=0.19). The activities of AST and CK were higher after the beginning of the convulsive episodes due to ammonia poisoning. Those results showed that occurred...

Leite,R.M.H.; Leite,R.C.; Lima,J.A.; Fóscolo,C.B.; Mota,P.M.P.C.; Lobato,F.C.F.; Lage,A.P..
The high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for the identification of isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide) in the milk of cattle treated with a dose of 25 mg/kg/day in alternated days. The effect of milk pasteurization on the isoniazid residue concentration was also studied. The drug excretion presented a cyclic variation, with higher levels in the first day after administration (aa), a mean of 1104.48µg/l, and a decrease two days aa, with a mean of 104.12µg/l. Four days after the last administration of the drug it was not possible to identify residues of isoniazid in the milk of treated animals. Body weight and milk yield influenced the amount of the excreted drug, and pasteurization decreased (mean 47.07%) the concentration of isoniazid...
