Human activities facilitate coastal habitat transformation and homogenization. The spread of marine invasive species is one example. This in turn may inluence ish recruitment and the subsequent replenishment of adult assemblages. We tested habitat complexity effect on ish (Teleostei) recruitment by experimentally manipulating meadows of the habitat-forming invasive macroalga Caulerpa taxifolia (Chlorophyta). Among the fourteen ish species recorded during the experiment, only two labrids (Coris julis and Symphodus ocellatus) settled in abundance among these meadows. Patterns in the abundance of these juveniles suggested that reduced tri-dimensional meadow complexity may reduce habitat quality and result in altered habitat choices and / or differential... |

The study of marine macroalgae collected in N. Papua New Guinea in 1980, 1986, 1988 and 1990 resulted in 14 species (29 entities) of Caulerpa: C. biserrulata, C. cupressoides (5 ecads), C. elongata (2 ecads), C. filicoides var. andamanensis, C. lentillifera, C. manorensis, C. microphysa, C. opposita, C. racemosa (8 ecads), C. serrulata (3 ecads), C. sertularioides, C. taxifolia (2 ecads),C. verticillata, and C. webbiana ecad disticha. The representatives of the genus Caulerpa, collected during the Snellius-II Expedition (1984) in the Banda, Sawu and Flores Seas (Indonesia) are described and illustrated. Twelve species have been individualized, some including several growth forms (resulting in 26 entities): C. brachypus (2 ecads), C. cupressoides (6 ecads), C. elongata, C. fergusonii, C. lentillifera, C. lessonii, C. microphysa, C. racemosa (7ecads), C. serrulata (2 ecads), C. sertularioides, C. taxifolia (2 ecads), C. verticillata. An identification key is also added. |
