History on the biological nitrogen fixation research in graminaceous plants: special emphasis on the Brazilian experience Anais da ABC (AABC)
Baldani,José I.; Baldani,Vera L.D..
This review covers the history on Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) in Graminaceous plants grown in Brazil, and describes research progress made over the last 40 years, most of whichwas coordinated by Johanna Döbereiner. One notable accomplishment during this period was the discovery of several nitrogen-fixing bacteria such as the rhizospheric (Beijerinckia fluminensis and Azotobacter paspali), associative (Azospirillum lipoferum, A. brasilense, A. amazonense) and the endophytic (Herbaspirillum seropedicae, H. rubrisubalbicans, Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, Burkholderia brasilensis and B. tropica). The role of these diazotrophs in association with grasses, mainly with cereal plants, has been studied and a lot of progress has been achieved in the...

Influence of the moisture at harvest and drying process of the grains on the level of carotenoids in maize (Zea mays) Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
CARDOSO,Wilton Soares; BORÉM,Aluízio; KARAM,Décio; RIOS,Sara de Almeida; PAES,Maria Cristina Dias.
AbstractMaize is considered a source of carotenoids; however, these compounds are highly unstable, degraded by high temperatures, exposure to light and presence of oxygen. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the moisture and type of drying applied to grains on the level of carotenoids in yellow maize. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design (2 × 4 factorial), two levels of initial moisture at the harvest (22 and 19%) and three types of drying (in the sun; in the shade and in a dryer) and control (no drying). The samples of grains after drying with 12% of final moisture were analyzed by concentration of total carotenoids, carotenes (α-carotene + β-carotene), monohydroxilated carotenoids (β-cryptoxanthin), and...

Physico-chemical, sensory and nutritional characteristics of cereal bars with addition of acacia gum, inulin and sorbitol Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
SREBERNICH,Silvana Mariana; GONÇALVES,Gisele Mara Silva; ORMENESE,Rita de Cássia Salvucci Celeste; RUFFI,Cristiane Rodrigues Gomes.
Abstract The cereal bars are products globally accepted and consumed by all age groups. In this study, by Response Surface Methodology (RSM), the effects of different concentrations of inulin, acacia gum and sorbitol in the characteristics of hardness, color and water activity of cereal bars were studied. A total of 17 experiments being 8 factorials, 6 axials and 3 repetitions at the central point were performed. The regression model presented for the hardness was significant indicating that the quantities of inulin, acacia gum and sorbitol affect the hardness of the cereal bars. Referring to color it was observed that the less inulin and more sorbitol, the more yellow the tone of the bars was. The results of water activity were not influenced by the...

Promoters effectiveness in the improvement in iron and zinc absorption from the rice and bean Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
TORRES,Larissa Catelli Rocha; AMARAL,José Eduardo Pedroso Gomes do; Canniatti-Brazaca,Solange Guidolin.
Abstract Iron and zinc are essential micronutrients for the organism functioning and their lack can result in prejudices to human health. The information about the presence of minerals in the diet are normally referred to its total concentrations, however these values do not reproduce the fraction that might be bioaccessible for the human body. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the promoters increase the iron and zinc bioaccessibility in a rice-and-bean mix. For this, four treatments were elaborated, all containing rice and bean and varied between each other regarding the promoters added to this mix. Ascorbic acid and cysteine were the promoters chosen to evaluate the influence in the iron and zinc absorption. For this purpose, the tomato was...

Leukoencephalomalacia in horses associated with immature corn consumption Ciência Rural
Echenique,Joanna Vargas Zillig; Estima-Silva,Pablo; Pereira,Daniela Brayer; Marques,Lucas Santos; Ribeiro,Luiza Soares; Schild,Ana Lucia.
ABSTRACT: Horse leukoencephalomalacia (ELEM) is a disease caused by the ingestion of mycotoxins (fumonisins) produced by fungi of the genus Fusarium that infect corn and/or its byproducts. This disease has been described by ingestion of mature corn with humidity above 15% at temperatures below 20°C. The aim of this paper was to report an outbreak of leukoencephalomalacia in horses fed with immature corn. Two horses out of three showed neurological signs approximately seven days after eating immature corn in its reproductive phase (R2, milky grains). Corn was harvested and administered directly to the animals, with no storage. Deaths occurred approximately 24 hours after the onset of clinical signs. Grossly, there were multifocal dark red to brown areas in...

Mapping aluminum tolerance loci in cereals: A tool available for crop breeding Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Inostroza-Blancheteau,Claudio; Soto,Braulio; Ibáñez,Cristian; Ulloa,Pilar; Aquea,Felipe; Arce-Johnson,Patricio; Reyes-Díaz,Marjorie.
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the main factor limiting crop productivity in acidic soils around the world. In cereals, this problem reduces crop yields by 30-40%. The use of DNA-based markers linked to phenotypic traits is an interesting alternative approach. Strategies such as molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS) in conjunction with bioinformatics-based tools such as graphical genotypes (GGT) have been important for confirming introgression of genes or genomic regions in cereals but also to reduce the time and cost of identifying them through genetic selection. These biotechnologies also make it possible to identify target genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL) that can be potentially used in similar crops to increase their productivity. This review...

Taxonomic and phylogenetic re-evaluation of Microdochium, Monographella and Idriella Naturalis
Hernández-Restrepo, M.; Groenewald , J.Z.; Crous, P.W..
Based on morphology and DNA sequence data the taxonomic relationships of Microdochium, Monographella and Idriella were reassessed. Microdochium is morphologically and phylogenetically circumscribed, and the sexual genus Monographella treated as synonym on the basis that Microdochium has more species, is more commonly encountered, and more frequently used in literature. An epitype is designated for Microdochium phragmites, and several well-known species are redefined based on their morphology and DNA sequence data (LSU, ITS, BTUB and RPB2). Furthermore, the revision of Microdochium led to six new combinations (M. albescens, M. consociatum, M. fusariisporum, M. maydis, M. opuntiae and M. stevensonii) and six new species (M. citrinidiscum, M. colombiense, M....
