In the North-East Atlantic, the English Channel constitutes a biogeographical transition zone between the Boreal and Lusitanian provinces. Thus, many species reach there their distribution range limits. The aim of this thesis is to assess the effects of recent climate change on the distribution of the subtidal benthic macrofauna, poorly studied to date, basing on the comparison of data collected during a cool period (i.e. 1960s-70s) and during a warm period (i.e. 2012 and 2014) in the circalittoral coarse sediments. Two large communities were highlighted in the study of the structure of the assemblages found in this habitat: the gravelly coarse sand community and the pebbles and gravels community. The analysis of the evolution of seabed temperature for the...

Travers, Morgane.
Overfishing and climate change are now recognized to have important effects on marine ecosystem functioning but uncertainties remains about their combined effects. Using a modelling approach this thesis aims at assessing how the top-down effects of fishing and the bottom-up effects of climate combine themselves within the food web. A preliminary review highlighted the lack of end-to-end model applicable as it stands to our study case - the southern Benguela - and suitable to study the combined effects of fishing and climate. Coupling the plankton model ROMS-N2P2Z2D2 and the fish model OSMOSE appeared as an innovative method allowing to develop an appropriate tool meeting our objectives. The importance of two-way coupling via the predation process is first...

Vanderplancke, Gwenaelle.
The dissolved oxygen in seawater has steadily declined in many coastal marine ecosystems in the last 50 years because of global warming and increasing coastal human activities. This decrease in oxygen in seawater causes episodes of hypoxia increasingly frequent and severe in coastal and estuarine areas. Some organisms may escape these environmental constraints by migration or dispersion. Others, with limited swimming capabilities must implement physiological regulation (phenotypic plasticity) to enable them to adapt and survive. This is particularly the case of marine fish larvae that are likely to be present in coastal nursery at the end of their development. It is now well established that the regulations implemented by organisms to cope with their...

During recent decades, works on rocky shore biodiversity have been multiplied in the southern part of the Bay of Biscay and more precisely on intertidal and subtidal area were communities present a great interest. Necessity of conservation of coastal habitats and their communities and a growing pressure on coastal environments explain awareness of services provided by these ecosystems. Those communities are very sensitive to water quality change. Moreover, since the beginning of the XXI century various European directives require a good ecological status of coastal waters and conservation of their communities : Water Framework Directive (WFD), Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and conservation of habitats with Directive Habitat Fauna and Flora...

Goulletquer, Philippe.
The effect of climate changes on marine ecosystems and the ecosystemic services identified in the framework of the World ecosystem assessment program for the millennium (MEA, 2001), is a major scientific issue. In the first place, it seems necessary to identify these changes' characteristics from a physics point of view, as well as from a specific biodiversity (e.g., species distribution areas, exotic and invasive species), populational or marine ecosystem functioning point of view (e.g., trophic chain). However, one of the main difficulties in assessing these impacts results from the superposition and the interactions between natural variability and the different anthropic effects including economic activities (e.g. fisheries). A number of doubts remain,...

Ayache, Nour.
The diatom Pseudo-nitzschia includes certain toxic species capable of producing domoic acid (DA), an amnesic neurotoxin. The proliferation of these toxic species presents many risks ranging from serious ecological and economic damage to threats to public health. Problems related to these proliferations are increasing worldwide and the need for scientist to better understand the environmental factors influencing the appearance of these blooms is more necessary than ever. In this context, several species and strains of Pseudo-nitzschia have been studied to better understand and predict their physiological responses to future climate change. In particular, the experiments carried out allowed to explore the impact of salinity variations and ocean acidification...

Coastal upwelling in the eastern Gulf of California ArchiMer
Lluch-cota, Salvador Emilio.
Understanding and quantifying upwelling is of great importance for marine resource management. Direct measurement of this process is extremely difficult and observed time-series do not exist. However, proxies are commonly derived from different data; most commonly wind-derived. A local wind-derived coastal upwelling index (CUI) is reported for the period 1970-1996 and is considered representative for the eastern central Gulf of California, an important fishing area where no proxies exist. The index is well related to pigment concentration distribution, surface water temperature, and population dynamics of important fish resources over the seasonal time-scale. There is a biological response to ENSO activity not reflected by this index, indicating that...

Brunel, Thomas.
Recruitment - the number of young fishes that integrate each year the exploitable stock¿ has a central importance for stock dynamics. The high temporal variability in recruitment is a result of the environmental influence on survival during early life stages. Understanding the determinism of the influence of environment on recruitment remains one of the most important question in fisheries ecology. The present work aimed at answering some general questions about the influence of environment on fish recruitment using a macroecological approach. The study focused on the exploited fish populations of the Northeastern Atlantic. The first chapter of the thesis makes a review of the different methods used to estimate recruitment, compares recruitment estimates...

Lagarde, Adrien; Ahad-cisse, Abdoul; Gourguet, Sophie; Le Pape, Olivier; Thebaud, Olivier; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Morandeau, Gilles; Macher, Claire; Doyen, Luc.
This paper examines the effect of climate warming on the bio-economic performance of Bay of Biscay mixed fisheries and provides insights into the best management strategy for coping with global warming. To achieve this, a dynamic multi-species, multi-class, multi-fleets model is developed and calibrated using biological and environmental ICES and IPCC data. Fishing and economic data have been collected within the European DCF. The climate represented by the Sea Surface temperature is assumed to affect species recruitment. Three management strategies are then compared in terms of bio-economic outcomes: Status-Quo (SQ), Multi-species Maximum Sustainable Yield (MMSY), Multispecies Maximum Economic Yield (MMEY). Strategies are ranked with respect to two...
