Histology of the liver of Oligosarcus jenynsii (Ostariophysi, Characidae) from Los Padres Lake, Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Petcoff,Gladys M.; Díaz,Alcira O.; Escalante,Alicia H.; Goldemberg,Adriana L..
The liver is an organ notable for its sensitivity to a great variety of environmental factors. It is composed of a parenchyma divided into irregular lobules by the exocrine pancreas or hepatopancreas; the pancreatic cells are arranged around a branch of the portal vein. The hepatocytes are radially arranged in cords around a central sinusoid. The liver histomorphology and the organization of exocrine pancreatic tissue of O. jenynsii (Günther, 1864) is similar to the acinar morphology of many teleosts, including freshwater and marine species. The aim of the present work was to carry out the histological analysis of the liver of Oligosarcus jenynsii, one of the most common species inhabiting Los Padres Lake (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina).

Revalidation of Saccocoelioides bacilliformis (Digenea, Haploporidae) parasitizing species of Astyanax (Characiformes, Characidae) from southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gallas,Moisés; Utz,Laura R. P..
ABSTRACT In Argentina, Saccocoelioides bacilliformis Szidat, 1973 was described from specimens collected probably in Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758), but latter it was synonymyzed with Saccocoelioides octavus Szidat, 1970. During the examination of digenetic trematodes collected in different species of Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 from southern Brazil, we found specimens identified as Saccocoelioides. A detailed comparison of the morphology of the two species revealed that they should be considered valid, thus this study proposes the revalidation of S. bacilliformis. The traits that allowed the revalidation were: body shape, position of the caecal bifurcation, and the extension of the uterus and vitellarium. Parameters of infections are provided...

Juveniles of the piscivorous dourado Salminus brasiliensis mimic the piraputanga Brycon hilarii as an alternative predation tactic Neotropical Ichthyology
Bessa,Eduardo; Carvalho,Lucélia Nobre; Sabino,José; Tomazzelli,Paola.
In the district of Bom Jardim, in Nobres, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, there are clear water streams originating on karstic terrain. The dourado, Salminus brasiliensis, is an apex stalking predator in these streams. In clear waters, where visually oriented prey may perceive predator in advance, surprise is needed for successful attacks. These streams are cohabited by other Characiformes, like the frugivorous piraputanga Brycon hilarii, which lives in schools and exhibits body colour and shape similar to the dourados. Here we describe an alternative predatory tactic for juvenile dourado occurring in headwater streams of the Paraguay River basin, in which they act as an aggressive mimic of the piraputanga. Based on 43 h of observations in Bom Jardim, and on...

Revision of the Neotropical genus Triportheus Cope, 1872 (Characiformes: Characidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Malabarba,Maria Claudia S. L..
The genus Triportheus Cope, 1872 is revised and a total of 16 species (including 3 new species) are recognized from most of the major river drainages of South America. Triportheus magdalenae (Steindachner, 1878) is the sole species occurring west of the Andean Cordilleras. Triportheus paranensis (Günther, 1874) is considered a junior synonym of Triportheus nematurus (Kner, 1858) and a new Triportheus species is described for the río Paraguay basin. Chalcinus rotundatus iquitensis Nakashima, 1941 and Chalcinus elongatus iquitensis Nakashima, 1941 are placed into the synonymy of Triportheus albus Cope, 1872 and T. culter (Cope, 1872) respectively. The name Salmo clupeoides employed by Natterer (in Kner, 1860) is considered a nomen nudum. Neotypes are...

Spermiogenesis and spermatozoa ultrastructure in the Serrasalminae (Ostariophysi: Characiformes) with further evidence on the relationships of the piranhas and pacus Neotropical Ichthyology
Gusmão-Pompiani,Priscila; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Oliveira,Claudio; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani.
Spermatozoa and spermiogenesis ultrastructure were studied in the serrasalmine species Piaractus mesopotamicus, Mylossoma duriventre, Serrasalmus maculatus, and Metynnis mola and two distinct patterns may be recognized: the first common to Mylossoma, Serrasalmus and Metynnis, and the other, characteristic of Piaractus. The latter pattern is more similar to the conditions found in Salminus and Brycon. On the other hand, serrasalmine spermatozoa also share characteristics with the spermatozoa of species of the superfamily Anostomoidea. The phylogenetic significance of these characters is discussed.
