MOBILITY AND BIOAVAILABILITY OF HEAVY METALS AND METALLOIDS IN SOIL ENVIRONMENTS J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Violante,A; Cozzolino,V; Perelomov,L; Caporale,A.G; Pigna,M.
In soil environments, sorption/desorption reactions as well as chemical complexation with inorganic and organic ligands and redox reactions, both biotic and abiotic, are of great importance in controlling their bioavailability, leaching and toxicity. These reactions are affected by many factors such as pH, nature of the sorbents, presence and concentration of organic and inorganic ligands, including humic and fulvic acid, root exudates, microbial metabolites and nutrients. In this review, we highlight the impact of physical, chemical, and biological interfacial interactions on bioavailability and mobility of metals and metalloids in soil. Special attention is devoted to: i) the sorption/desorption processes of metals and metalloids on/from soil components...

Effects of Pig Slurry Application and Crops on Phosphorus Content in Soil and the Chemical Species in Solution Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
De Conti,Lessandro; Ceretta,Carlos Alberto; Ferreira,Paulo Ademar Avelar; Lorensini,Felipe; Lourenzi,Cledimar Rogério; Vidal,Renan Fagan; Tassinari,Adriele; Brunetto,Gustavo.
The application of pig slurry rates and plant cultivation can modify the soil phosphorus (P) content and distribution of chemical species in solution. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the total P, available P and P in solution, and the distribution of chemical P species in solution, in a soil under longstanding pig slurry applications and crop cultivation. The study was carried out in soil columns with undisturbed structure, collected in an experiment conducted for eight years in the experimental unit of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), Santa Maria (RS). The soil was an Argissolo Vermelho distrófico arênico (Typic Hapludalf), subjected to applications of 0, 20, 40, and 80 m3 ha-1 pig slurry. Soil samples were collected from the...

Chemical Species and Aluminum Concentration in the Solution of Acid Soils Cultivated with Soybean and Corn under Liming Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Cunha,Gabriel Octávio de Mello; Almeida,Jaime Antonio de; Ernani,Paulo Roberto; Pereira,Éderson Rodrigues; Skoronski,Éverton; Lourenço,Lucas Silva; Brunetto,Gustavo.
ABSTRACT Chemical speciation of the soil solution is an important tool to identify Al species related to phytotoxicity. In some Brazilian acid soils, the Al extractable by the KCl 1.0 mol L -1 solution (Al-KCl) exceeds 10 cmol c kg -1 and even then, in some situations, it does not cause toxicity to the plants. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between these high concentrations of Al-KCl found in some Brazilian acid soils and the activity of the different Al chemical species in the soil solution, as well as the response of soybean and corn plants to lime application. Subsurface horizon (B) samples of five soils were collected in four states of Brazil (AC, PE, RS, and SC) from areas that had never been cultivated. The samples were then given...

Chemical speciation: an instrument for evaluation of mineral bioavailability Ciência Rural
Reis,Luana Sarpa; Gonçalves,Édira Castello Branco de Andrade.
Chemical speciation allows knowing the the different chemical forms of metals in a sample. Sequential extraction procedures are used to evaluate the fractionation of the metals in solid matrices. Few studies are described in the literature related to chemical speciation in food. Residues from fruits and vegetables generated in industry processes results in significant nutritional losses. The nutritional value of a food containing a given mineral depends not only on its content, but also on its bioavailability. The present paper emphasizes the importance of chemical speciation in food, considering the amount of loss of fruits and vegetables, since they are great sources of minerals.
