Overall, drought and unfavourable temperatures are the major climatic limitations for coffee production. These limitations are expected to become increasingly important in several coffee growing regions due to the recognized changes in global climate, and also because coffee cultivation has spread towards marginal lands, where water shortage and unfavourable temperatures constitute major constraints to coffee yield. In this review, we examine the impacts of such limitations on the physiology, and consequently on the production of mainly Coffea arabica and C. canephora, which account for about 99 % of the world coffee bean production. Chill-induced changes in fatty acid composition of tonoplast vesicles from hypocotyls of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the changes induced by chilling on fatty acid composition of tonoplast vesicles from hypocotyls of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. The 7 day-old control seedlings were grown at 25°C while treated seedlings were submitted to low temperatures (10°C and 4°C) for 4 days after 3 days germination. The chilling stress resulted in a differential inhibition of plant growth at 10°C and 4°C. Following chilling at 10°C and 4°C, the rate of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids increased under chilling stress. Our results suggest that the increase of unsaturated fatty acids content as well as the higher rate unsaturated/saturate fatty acidsmight be used by V. unguiculata plants as an adaptation mechanism likely to maintain...

Sensory profile of 'Douradão' peaches cold stored under controlled atmosphere Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.

The sensory quality of 'Douradão' peaches cold stored in three different conditions of controlled atmosphere (CA1, CA2, CA3 and Control) was studied. After 14, 21 and 28 days of cold storage, samples were withdrawn from CA and kept for 4 days in ambient air for ripening. The sensory profile of the peaches and the descriptive terminology were developed by methodology based on the Quantitative Descriptive Analysis (QDA). The panelists consensually defined the sensory descriptors, their respective reference materials and the descriptive evaluation ballot. This study was carried out with one of the most important cultivar grown in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, which has gained the preference of consumers, due to its sweet taste, intense skin color and large size; however, these fruits are susceptible to chilling injury when cold stored for long periods. The use of controlled atmosphere (CA) with elevated CO2 and reduced O2 concentrations prevent the onset of the chilling symptom. Thus, the effect of three different conditions of controlled atmosphere (CA1, CA2, CA3 and Control) was evaluated in order to extend the storage life of 'Douradão' peaches. The study submitted in this paper intendent to assess the ability of a culture medium for the detection and counting of chilled fish spoilage flora. Some authors used a medium allowing the detection of the whole spoilage bacteria on the basis of H2S production but this medium as been only used for cod flora analysis (Gadus morhua) coming from north sea or baltic sea. Therefore this study aimed to assess the efficiency of medium on withing flesh (Merlangius merlangus), gadidae of temperate sea water, on the one hand and salmon flesh (Salmo salar), aquacultural salmonidae, on the other hand. Estudou-se a manutenção da qualidade do abacaxi 'Pérola', utilizando-se de refrigeração e atmosfera modificada. Os frutos foram armazenados em ambiente com controle de temperatura a 8ºC e 90%UR, durante 17 dias, quando foram transferidos para condição de ambiente (25ºC, 75-80%UR). Eles foram avaliados na recepção, caracterizando-os, após 5; 9; 13 e 17 dias sob refrigeração, e depois de transferidos para as condições de ambiente, aos 21; 25 e 29 dias. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial (6 x 8), tendo-se seis tratamentos (testemunha, duas ceras e três filmes plásticos) e oito épocas de avaliação.
