Environmental Indices for the Chinese Grain Sector AgEcon

Increased population pressure and political decisions have led to more intensive agricultural practices in China. As in other regions of the world, these practices can damage natural capital We use the Kalman filter and Chinese panel data to estimate an index of environmental productivity (natural capital), together with the parameters of environmental dynamics and the production function. These estimates show that intensive practices are likely to have had persistent, substantial, and statistically significant negative effects on productivity. Ignoring these effects can cause substantial misallocation of resources. The results illustrate the possibility of estimating sectoral environmental indices using data commonly available.

PRODUCTIVITY GROWTH, TECHNOLOGY PROGRESS, AND EFFICIENCY CHANGE IN CHINESE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION FROM 1984 TO 1993 AgEcon

This study applies a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach to analyze total factor productivity, technology, and efficiency changes in Chinese agricultural production from 1984 to 1993. Twenty- nine provinces in China were classified into advanced-technology and low-technology categories. The Malmquist productivity measures were decomposed into two components: technical change index and efficiency change index. The results showed that total factor productivity has risen in most provinces for both technology categories. Technical progress has been the most important factor to Chinese agricultural productivity growth since 1984 and will remain crucial to productivity growth in low-technology provinces. Optimal Chinese Agricultural Trade Patterns under the Laws of Comparative Advantage AgEcon

Using Chinese agricultural and resources data and an adaptation of the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek (HOV) international trade model, this paper projects what Chinese trade, production, and consumption patterns would be if China allowed the laws of comparative advantage to direct production and trade decisions. This work is motivated by the fact that current production and consumption patterns in China are likely very different from those that would exist under complete liberalization. Any econometric-based model must use current production patterns as a base against which policy changes can be evaluated; however, the greater role of market forces following trade liberalization may render the conclusions of the econometric model invalid.
