ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different drying methods on seed coat pigmentation and quality of oil and biodiesel extracted from crambe. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and four replications, totaling 20 plots. The treatments consisted of drying with heated air, natural air, ground, in the shade and in the plant. Physical and chemical analyzes were performed to verify the quality of grain, oil and biodiesel. The largest amounts of chlorophyll a and b and green beans and the lowest oil content were found in artificial drying with heated air. It was concluded that the drying in the plant presented grains and oil of better quality, but do not interfering in the quality of biodiesel,... |

ABSTRACT In grape, high temperatures and low humidity prolong midday depression of foliar photosynthesis and dramatically reduce fruit yield. In this study, we explored the effects of various mist micro-spray treatments on grape photosynthesis at a test site in Shanshan County (N, 42.91°; E, 90.30°), Turpan, Xinjiang, China. We tested four different mist micro-spray durations including 1 h (WP1), 2 h (WP2), 3 h (WP3), and 0 h (CK). WP1, WP2, and WP3 affected canopy air temperature and humidity for 5 h, 7 h, and 9 h, respectively. At 12:30, WP1, WP2, and WP3 had the strongest cooling effect and altered temperature by −5.12 °C, −5.09 °C, and −5.17 °C respectively. The relative chlorophyll content was higher in the upper than the lower canopy leaves. There... |

Collard greens (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) "Manteiga" were harvested in commercial fields in Brasilia, Brazil, aiming to evaluate different oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen combinations to extend the shelf life of the fresh-cut product. After harvest, leaves were taken to the postharvest laboratory, selected for external blemishes and minimally processed (3 mm thick) inside a cold room (13±2°C). After processing, fresh-cut collard greens were stored under two controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions (3% O2, 4% CO2; 5% O2, 5% CO2/balance N2), and normal air (control), at 5°C (95±2% RH), for six days. Daily, minimally processed collard greens were evaluated for total vitamin C, total chlorophyll, total soluble solids content, and titratable acidity.... |

ABSTRACT Conventional soil and hydroponic growing systems have inherent differences in water and nutritional availability. These differences may affect plant physiological development and biochemistry. The objective of this study was to evaluate lettuce (Lactica sativa) cv. ‘Crocantela’development in either a hydroponic system or in soil through analyses of vegetative growth; chlorophyll abundance; and sugar and starch content. We evaluated the dry mass (DM), fresh mass (FM), number of leaves (LN), stomatal density and contents of chlorophyll, carotenoids, sugars and starch. Due to the improved nutritional conditions, especially in relation to macronutrients, plants grown in hydroponic system presented significant differences in chlorophyll a (0.4481... |

Lettuce is a vegetable highly susceptible to water loss, which reduces its shelf life and increases the final cost to the consumer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydrocooling on the postharvest shelf life of butter lettuce 'Vitória de Santo Antão'. The lettuce heads, after selection, were subjected to the following treatments: T1= hydrocooling followed by storage at 5°C in the cold chamber; T2= storage in the cold chamber at 5°C without hydrocooling; T3= hydrocooling followed by storage at 22°C and T4= storage at 22°C without hydrocooling. We determined the shelf life, leaves mass loss, chlorophyll content, relative water content, total soluble sugars content, reducing sugars, non-reducing sugars and starch. The data were analyzed in... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid (SA) application on pre-transplant acclimatization of native populations of tomato. SA is a growth regulator that modifies plant growth and development by inducing changes in cell processes, physiology and morphology. Five populations of native tomato were sown in polystyrene trays. Peat moss was used as substrate and plants were maintained at field capacity continuously. After emergence, seedlings were applied during three weeks with different concentration of SA (0.0, 0.01, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 μM). A completely random experimental design was used with five replications per treatment. The growth parameters evaluated were height, stem diameter, number of leaves, hypocotyl length,... |

Heavy rain events alter the biogeochemical outflows, affects water quality and ecosystem health within the coastal waters of small Pacific Islands. We characterized snapshots of the optical fingerprints of dissolved organic matter (DOM) sources together with the select nutrients, biogeochemical and physical variables for 10 stations in December 2017 in Laucala Bay, Fiji Islands. DOM absorption coefficients and fluorescence components were determined via spectrofluorometry and Parallel Factor Analysis identifying four components: Type M, two terrestrial (humic, fulvic) components, and a protein component linked to marine biological activity. Associations of DOM together with climate variables and the other tested variables were determined via principal... |

A unique feature of the subtropical South Indian Ocean is the existence of anticyclonic eddies that have higher chlorophyll concentrations than cyclonic eddies. Off Western Australia, this anomalous behavior is related to the seeding of anticyclonic eddies with shelf water enriched in phytoplankton biomass and nutrients. Further off-shore, two mechanisms have been suggested to explain the eddy/chlorophyll relationship: (i) eddies originating from the Australian coast maintain their chlorophyll anomaly while propagating westward; and (ii) eddy-induced Ekman upwelling (downwelling) enhances (dampens) nutrient supply in anticyclonic (cyclonic) eddies. Here we describe the relationship between eddies and surface chlorophyll within the South Indian Ocean, and... |

Nutrients levels of marine water along the North of France coastline are growing-up. They have a good chance to become a problem in the future. Since 1992, a network of three radial lines is sampled at regular interval to supervise on long term : 1. Parameters levels that show the environment quality (temperature, salinity, turbidity, total suspended matters, organic suspended matters, chlorophyll, phaeopigments, phytoplankton). 2. Nutrients concentrations ( ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, silicate) that enrich the environment , and may be responsable of its deterioration. The report shows the results of the first three years survey. I t strikes a correlation between the tested parameters and takes stock of the present situation. |
