Measuring Japanese consumers’ evaluation of beef derived from cattle fed in accordance with improved food safety measures OAK
SAWADA, Manabu; AIZAKI, Hideo; SATO, Kazuo; KIKKAWA, Toshiko; 澤田, 学; 合崎, 英男; 佐藤, 和夫; 吉川, 肇子.
The purpose of this paper was to verify the stability of consumers’ evaluations of food safety by conducting the identical choice experiments questionnaire survey at the same site two different times. The two surveys, measuring the consumers’ evaluations of beef derived from cattle fed in accordance with improved food safety measures were conducted in January 2003 (n = 83) and March 2004 (n = 369) in Kiyota ward of Sapporo city in Hokkaido, Japan. A comparison of the results of the two surveys suggests that social issues related to the choice experiment questions can significantly influence the consumers’ inferred values for food safety on the basis of the questions.本稿の目的は,同一の選択実験を同一地域の異なる2 時点で行い,食品安全性に関する消費者評価の安定性を 検討することである。北海道札幌市清田区の住民を対象...

Bewertung von Landschaftsfunktionen mit Choice Experiments AgEcon
Schmitz, Kim; Schmitz, P. Michael; Wronka, Tobias C..
The first application of choice experiments as an environmental valuation method in Germany clearly demonstrates the potential of this method for the valuation of agriculture's multifunctionality. Choice experiments are a reasonable enhancement of the conjoint analysis as they are capable of calculating the theoretically correct welfare measures in the form of implicit prices. In combination with business and ecological models this allows for the comprehensive valuation of agriculture's multifunctionality in the sense, that in addition to the supply or cost side of land use scenarios the demand or benefit side is accounted for. In this study the integrated ecological and economical valuation of land use scenarios was demonstrated for two different...

Beef Labeling After BSE: Do Consumers Care about BSE Testing and GMO Labeling? Evidence from Canada and the US AgEcon
Steiner, Bodo E.; Yang, Jun.
Following the May 2003 Canadian BSE case, food safety issues have become even more prominent to policymakers and consumers. In both Canada and the US, governments and industry have responded with a variety of quality assurance, traceability and labeling schemes. However, there is little information available on the extent to which consumer perceptions differ regionally across North America towards labeling schemes. This paper attempts to fill this gap, by providing results on a variety of beef labeling strategies from choice experiments that were conducted in Alberta (Canada) and Montana (US). The analysis focuses on consumers' perceptions towards negative voluntary labeling with regard to BSE testing, genetically modified organisms (GMO) and the use of...

A choice experiment method to assess vegetables producers’ preferences for crop insurance AgEcon
Mercade, Lluc; Gil, Jose Maria; Kallas, Zein; Serra, Jordi.
Agricultural producers face many risks in their economic activity due to weather conditions, plant or animal diseases, price volatility, policy changes and so on. One of the management tools to deal with some of these risks is the crop insurance system. In Catalonia (North-East of Spain) farmers’ participation in crop insurance for vegetables is low. Only 5 percent of the vegetables area is insured, when in Spain, as a whole, this percentage is around 20 percent. Different reasons have been suggested to explain this low participation ratio such as low risk perception, risk diversification, insurance cost or crop damage assessment rules, among others. However, no systematic research has been undertaken to assess farmers’ preferences for crop insurance in...

Estimating the public benefits of mitigating damages caused by invasive plant species in a subsistence economy AgEcon
Rai, Rajesh Kumar; Scarborough, Helen.
This paper presents analysis of a choice experiment (CE) designed to estimate willingness-topay (WTP) to mitigate damages caused by invasive plant species (IPS) in a rural community of Nepal. In order to address the cash constraints problem in a subsistence economy, two payment attributes, labor contribution and membership fee, were included in the choice sets. The results reveal that rural farmers have significant WTP for forest management activities, in terms of both cash and labor contributions. The results also suggest that rural farmers value their time in this context at a different rate to the current wage rate.

Does respondent’s perceived knowledge of the status quo affect attribute attendance and WTP in choice experiments? Evidence from the Karapiro Catchment Freshwater streams AgEcon
Marsh, Dan; Mkwara, Lena Asimenye; Scarpa, Riccardo.
In environmental valuation studies with stated preference methods researchers often provide descriptions of status quo conditions which may differ from those perceived by respondents. Ignoring this difference in utility baselines may affect the way attributes are attended to in choice tasks and further affect the magnitude of utility changes and hence bias the implied estimates of benefits from the proposed environmental policies. We investigate this issue using data from a choice experiment on a community’s willingness to pay for water quality improvements in streams. About 60% of respondents perceived the description of the quality of water in streams to be better than the one we provided in our scenario. Our results show some differences in serial...

Stakeholder Preferences for Water Management Alternatives in the Red River Basin AgEcon
Torpen, David R.; Hearne, Robert R..
Effective and efficient water management implies understanding the wants and desires of the human populations through its key stakeholder groups. As a valuable resource that involves many regulating and managing players, the Red River of the North basin is an excellent case for studying stakeholder preferences and presenting them to involved managers. The primary goal of this research was to analyze stakeholder preferences for hypothetical Red River basin fresh water management alternatives. Specific objectives included comparing preferences across key stakeholder groups and estimating residents’ willingness to pay for additional water management programs. Initial experts’ and focus group meetings were used to select appropriate attributes and...

Consumers want safer meat - but not at all costs AgEcon
Morkbak, Morten Raun; Christensen, Tove; Gyrd-Hansen, Dorte E..
Consumers, the public authorities, and the food industry are all concerned with the safety of meat. The increasing demand for safer food from the consumers and the public authorities puts pressure on producers to identify efficient methods to reduce risks. Earlier studies have shown that consumers state a willingness to pay for safer meat – but we know very little about how different methods to reduce risks affect the consumers’ preferences for safer meat. In the present study, a choice experiment for a representative sample of the Danish population was conducted to elicit whether consumers’ willingness to pay for reducing the risks of Salmonella infections was affected by the specific risk reduction methods (risk reductions using the current policy, at...

Farm Animal Welfare - Testing for Market Failure AgEcon
Carlsson, Fredrik; Grykblom, Peter; Lagerkvist, Carl Johan.
Many consumers are concerned with animal welfare in the conventional production of farm livestock. This concern can be related both to their own and others’ consumption. In the latter case, there is a negative externality from consumption. We suggest a survey design that enables us to test for a market failure in farm livestock production. Applying this to the question of battery cages in egg production, we cannot show that a market failure exists. The policy can be extended to general discussion of how potential market failures for all kind of farm livestock should be managed.

How to increase the effectiveness of agri-environmental subsidy schemes through knowledge of farmer perceptions-a choice experiment on pesticide free buffer zones AgEcon
Christensen, Tove; Pedersen, Anders Branth; Nielsen, Helle Orstead; Morkbak, Morten Raun; Hasler, Berit; Denver, Sigrid.
Danish farmers have been far less interested in agri-environmental subsidy schemes than anticipated. We use choice experiments to estimate 486 Danish farmers’ preferences for a number of policy relevant scheme-characteristics. Subsidy schemes for pesticide free buffer zones along hedgerows are used as a case and analysed using a random parameter logit framework. By quantifying farmers’ preferences in monetary values, we are able to assess the relative importance of individual scheme-characteristics. Farmer’s assessments of the administrative burden are captured by estimating how they value free-of-charge assistance for the application procedure. To our knowledge, this measure of administrative burden has not been tested before. Our results indicate that...

An Application of Conjoint Analysis in Agricultural Sustainability Assessment AgEcon
Sydorovych, Olha; Wossink, Ada.
Increasing public interest in the concept of sustainable agriculture has resulted in the development of a number of methods that could be used for the assessment of sustainability of various agricultural production systems. Because of its complex, multi-dimensional nature, sustainability is most often assessed using numerous indicators, which make aggregate comparisons among systems difficult. In this paper we propose a methodology that could be beneficial in aggregate sustainability assessment. We apply conjoint analysis to identify economic, social, and ecological attributes that are perceived as important for agricultural sustainability by different stakeholders and to assess their relative impact on the overall sustainability measure.

Designing choice experiments to Test for Anchoring and Framing Effects AgEcon
Kragt, Marit Ellen; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
Choice experiments (CE) are increasingly used as a stated preference technique to value changes in non-market goods. Respondents to a CE survey are asked to make repeated choices between alternatives. Each alternative is described by a number of attributes – the attributes levels vary across alternatives and choice sets. A monetary attribute is typically included so that marginal values for changes in the non-market attributes presented can be estimated. The monetary attribute has central importance. However, there has been limited research on the impacts on respondents’ choices of changing the (range in) levels of the monetary attribute presented in CE surveys. This is known as the ‘anchoring’ effect. The ‘framing’ of non-market attributes may also...

Strategic response to a sequence of discrete choice questions AgEcon
McNair, Ben J.; Bennett, Jeffrey W.; Hensher, David A..
According to neoclassical economic theory, the only stated preference elicitation format that can feasibly be employed in field studies to which truthful response can be the dominant strategy for all respondents is a single binary choice between the status quo and one alternative. In studies where the objective is estimation of preferences for multiple attributes of a good, it is preferred (and, in some cases, necessary) based on econometric considerations, to present respondents with a sequence of choice tasks. Economic theory predicts that utility-maximising respondents may find it optimal to misrepresent their preferences in this elicitation format. In this paper, the effect on stated preferences of expanding the number of choice tasks per respondent...

Applying Geographically Weighted Regression to Conjoint Analysis: Empirical Findings from Urban Park Amenities AgEcon
Tanaka, Katsuya; Yoshida, Kentaro; Kawase, Yasushi.
The objective of this study is to develop spatially-explicit choice model and investigate its validity and applicability in CA studies. This objective is achieved by applying locally-regressed geographically weighted regression (GWR) and GIS to survey data on hypothetical dogrun facilities (off-leash dog area) in urban recreational parks in Tokyo, Japan. Our results show that spatially-explicit conditional logit model developed in this study outperforms traditional model in terms of data fit and prediction accuracy. Our results also show that marginal willingness-to-pay for various attributes of dogrun facilities has significant spatial variation. Analytical procedure developed in this study can reveal spatially-varying individual preferences on attributes...

Investigating the Effects of Attribute Level Framing and Changing Cost Levels in Choice Experiments AgEcon
Kragt, Marit Ellen; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
Choice experiments (CE) are increasingly used to estimate the values of non-market goods and services. A cost attribute is typically included in a CE questionnaire to estimate monetary values for changes in the non-market attributes presented. Although the cost attribute is centrally important, there has been limited research into the impacts of varying cost attribute levels on respondents’ choices in CE surveys. The context in which non-market attributes are presented to respondents (the ‘attribute frame’) may also affect value estimates. The challenge for CE practitioners is to identify the ‘appropriate’ attribute frames and cost level range. Results from a CE study in Tasmania show that respondents’ preferences are not impacted by describing an...

A CHOICE-EXPERIMENT BASED ANALYSIS OF PROTECTION MOTIVATION THEORY: HEALTH RELATED BEHAVIOR OF CONSUMERS WITH CELIAC DISEASE AgEcon
Zhang, Jing; Steiner, Bodo E..
The underlying components of protection motivation theory (PMT; Rogers 1983) are explored through choice experiment-based analysis within a random utility framework, to account for some of the motivational, cognitive, and affective processes that likely affect celiacs’ propensity to use a novel health-risk reducing product. Those four groups of variables that are aimed to capture threat appraisal and coping appraisal processes as part of the standard PMT (Rogers 1975, 1983; Floyd et al. 2000) are found to contribute significantly to explaining the adaptive response of celiacs. Self-assessed vulnerability and perceived product efficacy form a most significant part of respondents’ threat appraisal process. Standard socio-demographic and lifestyle...

Stated Choice Experiments with Complex Ecosystem Changes: The Effect of Information Formats on Estimated Variances and Choice Parameters AgEcon
Hoehn, John P.; Lupi, Frank; Kaplowitz, Michael D..
Stated choice experiments about ecosystem changes involve complex information. This study examines whether the format in which ecosystem information is presented to respondents affects stated choice outcomes. Our analysis develops a utility-maximizing model to describe respondent behavior. The model shows how alternative questionnaire formats alter respondents’ use of filtering heuristics and result in differences in preference estimates. Empirical results from a large-scale stated choice experiment confirm that different format presentations of the same information lead to different preference parameter estimates and error variances. A tabular format results in choice parameter estimates with statistically smaller variances than parameters estimated from...
