Effects of different sampling intervals on apparent protein and energy digestibility of common feed ingredients by juvenile oscar fish (Astronotus ocellatus) - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v34i2.10541 Animal Sciences
Nascimento, Thiago Matias Torres do; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho"; Fabregat, Thiago El Hadi Perez; Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina; Rodrigues, Laurindo André; Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária, Meio-Norte; Sakomura, Nilva Kazue; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho"; Fernandes, João Batista Kochenborger; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho".
This study evaluated the apparent protein and energy digestibility of common feed ingredients (soybean meal, fish meal, wheat meal and corn) by juvenile oscars using two different sampling intervals (30 min. and 12h). The 160 juvenile oscar fish tested (22.37 ± 3.06 g BW) were divided into four cylindrical plastic net cages, each one placed in a 1000 L feeding tank. The experiment was completely randomized in a 2 x 4 factorial design (2 feces collection intervals and 4 feed ingredients) with four replications. The statistical tests did not detect an interaction effect of sampling interval and type of ingredient on digestibility coefficients. Sampling interval did not affect protein and energy digestibility. The physical characteristics of juvenile oscar...

Efficiency of eugenol as anesthetic for the early life stages of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Ribeiro,Paula A.P.; Miranda-Filho,Kleber C.; Melo,Daniela C. de; Luz,Ronald K..
In aquaculture, activities with anesthetic compounds are usually used in order to ensure the welfare of farmed fish, allowing handling out of water with decreased trauma by stress. Presently, there is no information about anesthetic action of eugenol in early life stages of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The objective of this study was to evaluate different concentrations of eugenol for larvae and juveniles of Nile tilapia. Sixty animals were used for each group of weight, group I = 0.02 g; group II = 0.08 g; group III = 0.22 g; group IV = 2.62 g; and group V = 11.64 g. The eugenol concentrations tested were 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 175 mg L-1. No mortality was reported during the tests with eugenol. Tilapia larvae with 0.02 g and juveniles around...

Visual communication stimulates reproduction in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.) BJMBR
Castro,A.L.S.; Gonçalves-de-Freitas,E.; Volpato,G.L.; Oliveira,C..
Reproductive fish behavior is affected by male-female interactions that stimulate physiological responses such as hormonal release and gonad development. During male-female interactions, visual and chemical communication can modulate fish reproduction. The aim of the present study was to test the effect of visual and chemical male-female interaction on the gonad development and reproductive behavior of the cichlid fish Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.). Fifty-six pairs were studied after being maintained for 5 days under one of the four conditions (N = 14 for each condition): 1) visual contact (V); 2) chemical contact (Ch); 3) chemical and visual contact (Ch+V); 4) no sensory contact (Iso) - males and females isolated. We compared the reproductive...

Metabolic adjustments in Satanoperca aff. jurupari (Perciformes: Cichlidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Chippari-Gomes,Adriana R.; Leitão,Marco Aurélio B.; Paula-Silva,Maria de Nazaré; Mesquita-Saad,Lenise S. B. de; Almeida-Val,Vera Maria F..
In this paper, we describe the enzyme levels and isozyme distribution in skeletal and heart muscle of Satanoperca aff. jurupari, (Cichlidae, subgroup Geophaginae). LDH and CS were measured in skeletal and heart muscle. Starch gel electrophoresis was used to determine the isozyme/allozyme patterns in different tissues; LDH, MDHs, PGM, PGI, ADH, G-6-PDH and SOD were screened for the numbers of loci, presence of alleles, and tissue specificity. The LDH/CS ratio in heart and skeletal muscle were 173.36 and 6.1, respectively, indicating anaerobic metabolism in the former and aerobic metabolism in the latter muscle. No inhibition by pyruvate (based on the ratios of LDH activity with 1 mM and 10 mM pyruvate) was detected in heart and skeletal muscle, indicating...

Reproductive traits of Gymnogeophagus labiatus (Teleostei, Cichlidae), in an upper stretch of Sinos river, Caraá, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Verba,Júlia T.; Lampert,Vinicius R.; Azevedo,Marco A..
This work describes the reproduction of Gymnogeophagus labiatus (Hensel, 1870) from an upper stretch of Sinos river, southern Brazil, based on the analysis of 174 males and 132 females captured in monthly samples taken from January to December 2007. Results showed that reproductive activity occur in spring and summer although ripe males were found along the year. The standard length of the smallest ripe male was 104.74 mm (Lt) and the smallest ripe female was 55.00 mm (Lt). There was a significant difference in total sex ratio, with 1.32 males to each female (χ2 = 5.76). Males were much more abundant in March (1.75 males: 1 female) and December (5 males: 1 female). Females were more abundant in the 62├77 mm interval (1 male: 2.36 female) while males were...

Species or population? Systematic status of Vieja coatlicue (Teleostei: Cichlidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
McMahan,Caleb D.; Matamoros,Wilfredo A.; Elías,Diego J.; Piller,Kyle R..
ABSTRACT Pacific and Atlantic-slope rivers of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico contain two cichlid species of the genus Vieja relevant to the current study, V. zonata and V. coatlicue, respectively. The Atlantic-slope species was initially considered a population of uncertain taxonomic status and recently described as a distinct species based on three putatively diagnostic morphological characters. The objective of this study was to combine new and existing genetic data, along with reanalysis of morphological characters, to test the distinctiveness of V. coatlicue. Little genetic variability and no geographic structuring were recovered. Additionally, putatively diagnostic morphological character states were present across both species, failing to...
