As part of a larger project financed by the European Union programme "Community initiative PESCA" on the study of "small scale fisheries" in Aquitaine (France), an estimation of the stock of clams in the Bassin d'Arcachon has been conducted. A two-stage stratified random sampling survey has been designed. Samples have been collected using a Hamon bottom sampler in 237 locations distributed over 24 km2. The clam Tapes philippinarum, which appeared in the basin following a series of aquaculture experiments in the mid eighties, is now the main species accounting for more than 90% of the abundance and the biomass, largely overcoming the European species Tapes decussata. The mean abundance and biomass (26 clams / m2 et l28g / m2) are above those estimated in... |

We describe an emerging pathology, brown muscle disease (BMD), which specifically affects the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Arcachon Bay (France). BMD induces a transformation of the posterior adductor muscle, which becomes infused by conchiolin and calcified, reducing the ability of clams to bury. The disease affects both types of muscular tissue, with striated muscle becoming affected to a higher degree than smooth muscle. Two indices were created to quantify the symptoms: the Muscle Print Index, used for empty and live shells, and the Final Disease Index, utilized for live clams only. Histological sections were made and observed under light microscopy to examine the muscular damage and to investigate a causal agent. Sections revealed an... |

Basically, a dredge is a bottom-towed gear and consists of a metal frame with a blade or teeth, to dig into the sediment and extract the shelled molluscs, and a mesh bag to collect the catch. Whereas hand dredging is observed on some intertidal beds (Donax trunculus in France), the use of dredge generally needs a fishing boat. There is a great diversity of dredge types, with specific designs used to target different species in particular beds: Manual dredges for Donax (Donax trunculus), Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) and clams (Venerupis pulastra, Ruditapes sp) Dredges for King scallops (Pecten maximus) Dredges for Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) Dredge for Queen scallops (black and white, Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularia) Dredges for small... |

Shellfish production, and production of marine bivalve molluscs in particular, is the main form of marine aquaculture in the European Union, with a production estimated at 1,200,000 tons in 1999 (Food and Agricultural Organization). Moreover, aquaculture production is rapidly expanding throughout Europe and is becoming a major economic resource in developing areas such as Northern Greece, Ireland, and northwestern Spain. These shellfish, mainly mussels, oysters, and clams, are produced in a natural environment. Due to variations in their environment, these otherwise edible species may however become unsafe for human consumption. Potential problems are amplified due to the nature of shellfish themselves: as they are filter feeders, they consume large... |

Introduction: Through the combined works of research, local communities and professionals, a new activity has been created, "vénériculture", i.e. clam farming. Thanks to the knowledge acquired in research as well as production in the shellfish field, clam production results followed shortly thereafter. Rightly so, only 10 years have elapsed since the beginning of the research and the actual production phase (500 t) involving about 300 professionals. Research conducted by IFREMER positively contributes to the creation of new trades as well as diversity within existing professions. Clams are marketed nationally as well as exported. French producers are truly competent, but the prospect of open borders and increasing competition requires maintaining a high... |

For the first time, effective treatments using cytochalasin B were developed to induce triploidy in the European clam, Ruditapes decussatus (L.). The percentage of triploid embrios was assessed by karyological or image analysis. Two treatments (O.5 or 1 mg of cytochasin B (CB per ml of dimethylsulfoxide in 1 l of sea water) were applied at different times after fertilization (10 to 25 mn), for two different periods (15 and 20 min). Best results were obtained for a CB concentration of 1 mg/l. When treatment was applied 15 min after fertilization for a 20 min period, 94% and 95% of triploid embryos were obtained in two repeated experiments. At metamorphosis, the treated larvae appeared to be no smaller than the control larvae in all experiments. Thowever, in... |

The exploited stocks of wild bivalves (common cockles, dog cockles, clams, and spisules) in the Norman-Breton gulf vary according to the fishing activity and the environmental conditions. Different studies, carried out by the Ifremer in this region (between 1982 and 1998), enabled the evaluation of the stocks available for fishing as well as the collection of data on these species (demographic structure, growth...). For more information on the 1993-1994 studies and a presentation of the site and the fishery please refer to the reports by Berthou, 1987 and Noël et al, 1995. The bivalve expedition conducted in May 2002, enabled us to update the data on the populations of dog cockles and banded carpet shells, then of spisules and clams, using the same... |

The variations of catalase activity, which is a biochemical biomarker of exposure to an oxidative stress, were followed month by month (from May 1998 to May 1999) in Mediterranean clams (Ruditapes decussatus) collected at three stations (J, A and F), and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected at two stations (J and C) in Lake Bizerte (Tunisia). Several oceanographic parameters were measured together with catalase activity in the animals to evaluate the quality of waters in the lake. Whatever the station taken into consideration, catalase activity in clams significantly varied as a function of the season, with marked increases in September, when the quality of waters was poor. Clams originating from station A presented the highest mean activity... |

The carpet shell clam (Tapes decussatus Linnaeus, 1758) is a candidate species for aquaculture development in Turkish waters. Our study aimed to assess the efficiency of three different methods (i.e., net, box and fenced ground) to maximize clam production. Two different net materials (hard plastic net and polyamide net) were tested in the net method trials. Conducted over 1 year between October 2001 and October 2002, an initial calibrated clam population, characterized by a 26.25 ± 0.035 mm shell length and 3.85 ± 0.06 g total wet weight was sampled on a monthly basis to carry out the experiments. By the end of the rearing cycle, clams reached 34.13 ± 0.38 mm and 9.09 ± 0.27 g in shell length and total wet weight, respectively. Significant differences in... |
