Use of clearance rate in Choromytilus chorus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) as a non-destructive biomarker of aquatic pollution RChHN
TORO,BEATRIZ; NAVARRO,JORGE M.; PALMA-FLEMING,HERNÁN.
Reduction in clearance rate was observed in the mussel Choromytilus chorus in relation to the degree of environmental pollution. Three sampling sites included the polluted San Vicente Bay, middling polluted Corral Bay, and weakly polluted Yaldad Bay in southern Chile. Pollution levels were estimated by quantitative analysis of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mussel tissue from the three sites. Mussels from San Vicente showed lowest clearance rates and highest PAHs levels in both spring 1998 and summer 1999. Populations from Corral and Yaldad showed generally low levels of PAHs, so the mussels from Yaldad showed the highest rates of clearance in comparison to Corral and San Vicente populations. The significant negative relationship (P <...

Влияние условий питания на скорость потребления и переваривания пищи у лопастного гребневика Mnemiopsis leidyi IBSS Repository

Sources of paralytic shellfish toxin accumulation variability in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Pousse, Emilien; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Hegaret, Helene; Jean, Fred.
This study was designed to assess the contribution of feeding behavior to inter-individual variability of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) accumulation in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. For this purpose 42 oysters were exposed for 2 days to non-toxic algae and then for 2 other days to the PST producer Alexandrium minutum. Individual clearance rate (CR) of oysters was continuously monitored over the 4 days using an ecophysiological measurement system. Comparison of CR values when exposed to toxic and non toxic algae allowed to estimate a clearance rate inhibition index (CRII). Toxin concentration of oysters was quantified at the end of the experiment. These data allowed to estimate the toxin accumulation efficiency (TAE) as the ratio of toxin...

Feeding of Crassostrea gigas at high seston load : modeling requirements ArchiMer
Barille, Laurent; Prou, Jean.
Ecophysiological experiments conducted in situ in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron during a spring and neap tide cycle in May 1991 , were designed to get a better representation of 2 important components of the energy budget of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas : clearance rate and selection efficiency. The relationships previously established by Raillard et al. ( 1993) are re-evaluated by integrating the effects of high seston loads, typical of tidal effect within estuaries, on the physiological processes. For the clearance rate, the re-evaluated parameterization includes: - a negative effect of turbidity. - a clogging threshold set to 192 mg/l. Selection efficiency parameterizations are modified by incorporating : - a constant inorganic ingestion for...

Ecophysiological and metabolic adaptations to sulphide exposure of the oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Le Moullac, Gilles; Cheize, Marie; Gastineau, Olivier; Daniel, Jean-yves; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Huvet, Arnaud; Moal, Jeanne; Pouvreau, Stephane; Van Wormhoudt, A; Samain, Jean-francois.
The purpose of this study is to examine the response of the oyster Crassostrea gigas to sulphide at different biological scales. A first experiment was designed to measure for 20 h the clearance (CR) and oxygen consumption (OC) rates of oysters exposed at different concentrations of sulphide (0, 3, 6, 12, 20, and 40 mu M). The second experiment was carried out to evaluate the metabolic adaptations to chronic sulphide exposure for 10 days by measuring PK and PEPCK enzyme activities, succinate and alanine content, the adenylate energy charge (AEC), and the activity of the electron transport system (ETS)in whole oysters at above 20 mu M. PK and PEPCK mRNAs and enzyme activities have been measured in adductor muscle. When exposed to sulphide above 20 mu M, CR...

Du concept de santé à la détermination d’intervalles de référence chez l’huître creuse Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Francois, Cyrille.
Of interest of everyone, health is not an easy concept to figure out. Although there is no universal definition of health, its various uses and meanings allow us to specify its biological, psychic and social dimensions. In animal health, the biological dimension remains the most studied, there is therefore no consensual definition of international animal health. So how to understand the health of marine shellfish? A living being can be functionally described in physiopathology by monitoring biomarkers under laboratory conditions. In men and many animals, "normal" biomarker values have been proposed; these have been determined by carrying out measurements or observations in samples of healthy populations, the rigorous selection of these populations and...

Ambient flow velocity and resulting clearance rates of the terebellid polychaete Lanice conchilega (Pallas, 1766) ArchiMer
Denis, L; Desroy, Nicolas; Ropert, Michel.
A laboratory flume study was conducted to determine the effect of flow velocity on clearance rates of the Polychaeta Terebellidea Lanice conchilega (Pallas, 1966). Using sets of 75 individuals collected along the east coast of the English Channel, we measured clearance rates at five flow velocities of approximate to 4, 9, 15, 22 and 27 cm s(-1) with a culture of the diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans as food source. During each control (without polychaetes) or clearance (with Lanice conchilega) experiment, in vivo fluorescence was continuously monitored. Further HPLC analysis confirmed the sediment resuspension for the highest flow velocities tested, indicating the need for 'corrections' from control experiments. The global pattern resulted in a dome-shaped...

Impact of Brown Ring Disease on the energy budget of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Flye Sainte Marie, Jonathan; Pouvreau, Stephane; Paillard, Christine; Jean, Fred.
Brown Ring Disease (BRD) is a bacterial disease caused by the pathogen, Vibrio tapetis. The disease induces formation of a brown deposit on inner shell of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum. Development of this disease is correlated with a decrease in the condition index of infected clams. Experiments were conduced in order to assess the effect of the development of BRD on two parameters affecting the energy balance of the clams: the clearance and the respiration rates. Experiments were performed in a physiological measurement system that allowed simultaneous measures of clearance and respiration rates. During both acclimation and measurements clams were fed with cultured T-iso and temperature was close to seasonal field temperature (10 degrees C....

Variability in particle retention efficiency by the mussel Mytilus edulis ArchiMer
Strohmeier, Tore; Strand, Oivind; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Duinker, Arne; Cranford, Peter J..
Seasonal variation in blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, retention efficiency (RE) responses to natural seston concentrations were investigated in the Lysefjord, Norway. The smallest particles shown to be effectively retained (100%) were approximately 7 μm and this was observed on only one occasion. The most common response was for RE to progressively increase from small to large particles with maximum RE at 30 to 35 μm (8 of 12 experiments). Temporal changes in the seston size distribution towards a dominance of smaller particles coincided with a decrease in the RE maxima to particles between 7 and 15 μm diameter. The RE of 1 μm and 4 μm diameter particles ranged between 14–64% and 12–86%, respectively, showing that small particles occasionally serve as a...

Group sweeping: Feeding activity and filtration rate in the tubiculous amphipod Haploops nirae (Kaim-Malka, 1976) ArchiMer
Rigolet, Carinne; Le Souchu, Pierrick; Caisey, Xavier; Dubois, Stanislas.
Haploops nirae is a gregarious tubiculous amphipod that uses its two pairs of antennae to filter particles from the water column. Recent sonar mappings of Haploops seabeds revealed that thousands of hectares of softbottom muddy sediments in South Brittany coastal ecosystems are now colonized by this amphipod. The present study investigates (1) the structure of the feeding organs and the mechanisms involved in particle capture, (2) the effect of environmental parameters (current velocity, turbidity and food concentration) on the feeding activity of H. nirae, quantified by the percentage of active individuals, the frequency of antennae beats and the number and duration of feeding events and (3) the retention efficiency and clearance rate of H. nirae...

Toward reference intervals for shellfish: An illustrative case of feeding and respiratory activities in the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
François, Cyrille; Haure, Joel; Billy, Jean-christophe; Renault, Tristan.
Background The Quality Assurance and Laboratory Standards Committee of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology and the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute provide a framework for establishing reference intervals of physiological parameters in reputedly healthy individuals, humans, and terrestrial animals, respectively. This framework was applied for the first time to the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Reference intervals (RIs) would, first, be of interest for research purposes, including pathophysiology studies. RI determination is the first step before considering the use of RIs for field applications by farmers and marine shellfish health services. Objectives The purpose of this study was to propose...

In situ suspension feeding behaviour of the pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera: combined effects of body size and weather-related seston composition ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Bodoy, Alain; Buestel, Dominique.
In situ clearance rate (CR) and biodeposition of the black pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, were followed during several field experiments from 1996 to 1998 in the lagoon of Takapoto. Serial measurements of total particulate matter (TPM, mg l(-1)), particulate inorganic matter (PLM, mg l(-1)), and particulate organic matter (POM, mg l(-1)) were related to meteorological conditions, especially wind speed. As a general case, POM and PLM increased with wind speed. Nevertheless, PLM increased faster than POM so that the organic content (OC, %) of the TPM decreased progressively when wind speed increased. These TPM variations induced direct changes in feeding processes of P. margaritifera. CR (l h(-1)) averaged 22 l h(-1) for a pearl oyster of 1 g dry...
