Prevalence of toxoplasmosis, HIV, syphilis and rubella in a population of puerperal women using Whatman 903® filter paper BJID
Madi,José Mauro; Souza,Ricardo da Silva de; Araújo,Breno Fauth de; Oliveira Filho,Petrônio Fagundes de; Rombaldi,Renato Luís; Mitchell,Charles; Lorencetti,Jucemara; Marcon,Nathalia Oliva.
OBJECTIVES: to determine the seroprevalence rate of toxoplasmosis, HIV, syphilis and rubella in a population of puerperal women. METHODS: a prospective, cross-sectional study was performed from February 2007 to April 2008 at Hospital Geral, Universidade de Caxias do Sul in a population of 1,510 puerperal women. Women that gave birth to live born or stillborn infants were included in the study; maternal and perinatal variables were analyzed. Descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-square with occasional Fisher's correction were used for comparisons. Alpha was set in 5%. RESULTS: a total of 148 cases of congenital infection (9.8%) were identified: 66 cases of syphilis (4.4%), 40 cases of HIV (2.7%), 27 cases of toxoplasmosis (1.8%) and 15 cases of rubella...

Early HHV-6 replication is associated with morbidity non-related to CMV infection after kidney transplantation BJID
Schroeder,Regina Barbosa; Michelon,Tatiana Ferreira; Garbin,Gabriela; Garcia,Valter; Silveira,Janaina Gomes da; Santos,Luciano; Neumann,Jorge; Keitel,Elizete.
Human herpesvirus type 6-(HHV-6) has been associated with morbidity after liver transplantation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the HHV-6 seroprevalence among donor-recipient pairs, analyze the incidence of early active infection, its clinical manifestation, interaction with CMV, and the related morbidity in the first year after kidney transplantation. METHODS: 46 donor-recipient pairs had IgG evaluated by ELISA before transplantation: HHV-6(Pambio - USA) and CMV-(Roche - USA). A frozen whole blood sample collected weekly (from the 1st to the 6th week) was retrospectively tested for HHV-6 viral load (VL) determination by real time quantitative PCR (qPCR, Nanogen - Italy). Patients were preemptively surveyed for CMV by pp65 antigenemia...

Rational design of diagnostic and vaccination strategies for tuberculosis BJID
Borsuk,Sibele; Seixas,Fabiana Kommling; Ramos,Daniela Fernandes; Mendum,Tom; McFadden,Johnjoe; Dellagostin,Odir.
The development of diagnostic tests which can readily differentiate between vaccinated and tuberculosis-infected individuals is crucial for the wider utilization of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) as vaccine in humans and animals. BCG_0092 is an antigen that elicits specific delayed type hypersensitivity reactions similar in size and morphological aspects to that elicited by purified protein derivative, in both animals and humans infected with the tubercle bacilli. We carried out bioinformatics analyses of the BCG_0092 and designed a diagnostic test by using the predicted MHC class I epitopes. In addition, we performed a knockout of this gene by homologous recombination in the BCG vaccine strain to allow differentiation of vaccinated from infected...

Discrepancies between clinical diagnoses and autopsy findings BJMBR
Coradazzi,A.L.; Morganti,A.L.C.; Montenegro,M.R.G..
Autopsy examination is considered to be an essential element for medical auditing and teaching. Despite the significant progress in diagnostic procedures, autopsy has not always confirmed the clinical diagnosis. In the present study, we compared the diagnosis recorded on medical charts with reports of 96 autopsies performed at the University Teaching Hospital of the Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu, Botucatu, SP, Brazil, between 1975 and 1982, and of 156 autopsies performed at the same institution between 1992 and 1996. The clinical diagnosis of the basic cause of death was confirmed at autopsy in 77% of cases. The percent confirmation fell to 60% when the immediate terminal cause of death was considered, and in 25% of cases, the terminal cause was only...

Repercussions of a sleep medicine outreach program BJMBR
Conway,S.G.; Tufik,S.; Frussa Filho,R.; Bittencourt,L.R.A..
Despite the high prevalence of sleep disorders, many healthcare professionals and lay people have little knowledge of Sleep Medicine. Mindful of such a reality, in 2001 the Sleep Institute of the Associação Fundo de Incentivo à Psicofarmacologia launched a campaign to increase Sleep Medicine awareness. Media features, exhibitions, inserts, and classes were used to reach 2,000,000 people and 55,000 healthcare professionals during the period from 2001 to 2004. To evaluate this program, we compared data for polysomnography referrals to the Institute in 2000 and in 2004. A total of 8805 referrals were evaluated (2000: 2164; 2004: 6641). Over the 4 years of the program, the number of beds increased by 43%; more women were referred (31 vs 37%; P < 0.001),...

Cunha, Fernando Malagutti; Coutinho, Selene Dall'Acqua; Matera, Antônio; Fiorio, Wagner Alexey Back; Ramos, Maria Christina Cristóvão; Silveira, Lúcia Maria Guedes.
Objective: To study dogs bearing otitis externa, objectifying the detection of predisposing factors and microorganisms involved in the etiopathogenesis of this disease. Material and Method: Forty animals (30 of them had otitis externa and 1O without the disease) from the "Serviço de Clínica Médica da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária da Universidade Paulista", (Medical Clinic Service from the Veterinary Hospital of Paulista Veterinary Medicine University) São Paulo, SP, Brazil, were submitted lo prior physical otological examination. The ear secretion samples were obtained from external ear canal using gynecological brushes, submitted to posterior cytological analysis with the help of three different coloration techniques. Results: Among the patients with...
