Regional metier definition: a comparative investigation of statistical methods using a workflow applied to international otter trawl fisheries in the North Sea ArchiMer
Deporte, Nicolas; Ulrich, Clara; Mahevas, Stephanie; Demaneche, Sebastien; Bastardie, Francois.
The European Common Fisheries Policy recognizes the importance of accounting for heterogeneity in fishing practices, and metier-based sampling is now at the core of the EU Data Collection Framework. The implementation of such an approach would require Member States to agree on the standard regional metier definitions and on practical rules to categorize logbook records into metiers. Several alternative approaches have been used in the past to categorize landings profiles, but no consensus has yet emerged. A generic open-source workflow is developed to test and compare a selection of methods, including principal components analysis (PCA), hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC), K-means, and Clustering LARge Applications (CLARA), and to provide simple...

Value added of Cluster Membership for Micro Enterprises of the Handloom Sector in Ethiopia AgEcon
Ali, Merima; Peerlings, Jack H.M..
By contrasting the performance of clustered micro enterprises with that of dispersed ones in the handloom sector in Ethiopia, this study shows that clustering significantly increases profit. To correct for selection bias, we match clustered and dispersed micro enterprises that share similar observable characteristics except for being clustered both in urban and rural areas. Results show that clustering is more profitable in urban than rural areas. It is also found that regional specific factors determining clustering of micro enterprises are different in urban and rural areas, highlighting the need to focus on local circumstances when formulating policies to promote clusters.

AGROHOLDINGS AND CLUSTERS IN KAZAKHSTAN’S AGRO-FOOD SECTOR AgEcon
Wandel, Jurgen.
The paper provides an overview of the institutional arrangements on the micro level that have evolved in the agro-food sector of Kazakhstan in the course of transition. Emphasis is laid on more complex arrangements like "agroholdings" and "clusters", hitherto mostly unknown in the agro-food sectors of established market economies. It is shown that "agroholdings" are concentrated mainly in the northern part of Kazakhstan and to a large extent in the grain sector, while in the south a scattered small scale (individual) farm structure has emerged. Parallel to this market-driven development, the Kazakhstani government tries to promote other institutional arrangements that it deems to be of superior competitiveness, especially agro-food clusters. Refering to...

The Role of Clustering in Rural Industrialization: A Case Study of the Footwear Industry in Wenzhou AgEcon
Huang, Zuhui; Zhang, Xiaobo; Zhu, Yunwei.
Wenzhou used to be one of the poorest regions in eastern China. With limited arable land, poor road access to major cities, and little support from the upper level governments, this region seemed to lack all the conditions necessary for economic growth. However, over the past several decades Wenzhou has developed the most dynamic private sector in China, and has accordingly achieved one of the fastest growth rates. In particular, the footwear industry in Wenzhou has grown from a negligible market share to the largest in China. Here, we report a survey of 140 Wenzhou-based footwear enterprises of various scales, and use this information to examine the driving forces behind the dramatic rural industrial growth seen in this region. Our results show that...

NETWORKING ON THE UTILIZATION OF LOCAL NATURAL RESOURCES AgEcon
Herbaly-Hekli, Katalin.
Together with its partners, Szolnok College is planning to evaluate a new project for networking on the utilization of local natural resources. This project is based on a research work (using the findings of the surveys completed by the representatives of hosts living in the eastern part of Hungary). The project itself is based on the adaptation of the theory of tourism into practice by presenting existing natural values in the supply portfolio of tourist service providers. A unique natural environment can be found alongside a 120 km-long stretch of River Tisza. These natural values interlink and complete each other with respect to Lake Tisza and River Tisza. Regions and settlements situated further from the specified settlements are also rich in natural...

Credit Constraints, Organizational Choice, and Returns to Capital: Evidence from a Rural Industrial Cluster in China AgEcon
Ruan, Jianqing; Zhang, Xiaobo.
Traditional economic theory posits that a well functioning capital market is a necessary condition for industrialization and economic growth. However, in reality it is observed that micro and small enterprises are ubiquitous because entrepreneurs can set up business in low-return activities with minimal barriers to entry. Using a cashmere sweater cluster in China as an example, this paper shows that organizational choice can overcome the prohibitive cost of investment. Facing credit constraints, firms are more likely to concentrate in divisible production technologies in the form of industrial clusters. With clusters, a vertically integrated production process can be decomposed into many small incremental stages, making them more accessible for small...

Classification of the EU countries labour markets AgEcon
Kaba, Bohumil.
The objective of the paper is to classify the labour markets of the EU member states on the basis of selected employment and unemployment indicators. In order to achieve the study target, the adequate multivariate exploration procedures have been chosen. In the first part of processing original data, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed. PCA is a multivariate statistical procedure used to reduce the number of observed variables into a smaller number of uncorrelated variables with a minimum loss of information. Moreover, the PCA results can be used for effective ranking of the EU countries according to observed indicators of labour markets. This paper describes the crucial steps in PCA and procedure for ranking mentioned and it reviews how...

Zur Bedeutung des Landwirtschaftlichen Clusters fur Landliche Raume AgEcon
Dannenberg, Peter; Kulke, Elmar.
In human geography the concepts of regional branch clusters have become increasingly important. In these concepts firms of the same or related supply chains work together and cooperate in networks of the same regional, cultural and social background. According to their regional proximity, firms can reduce their transaction costs. Also, having the same regional, cultural and social roots, it is easier for the actors of the co-operation networks to trustfully exchange competition relevant knowledge and to learn from each other. Therefore, the members of these regional clusters posses a higher ability to innovate and thus become competitive. While these concepts were generally based on industrial agglomerations, in 2004 we made a survey on 332 farmers in the...
