Community Supported Agriculture in the Urban Fringe: Empirical Evidence for Project Feasibility in the Metropolitan Area of Naples (Italy) AgEcon
Cicia, Gianni; Colantuoni, Francesca; Del Giudice, Teresa; Pascucci, Stefano.
Urbanisation of city-side areas effects on farm land use and organisation are analysed in this study with the objective of seeking the most effective way to implement a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme. Specifically, we used a theoretical framework to describe and assess the relationships between urbanization and farm-styles in the city belt. Our analysis is based on a case study in the protected area of the Campi Flegrei Regional Park situated in the north-western part of the Neapolitan metropolitan area, which is a peri-urban rural area with severe environmental management problems. Our results from the empirical analysis allowed us to distinguish the farms of the area into three behavioural-social groups on the basis of specific features, in...

Typification of Dairy Farms According to Criteria of a Socioeconomic Nature: An Illustration in "El Paramo" of Leon (Spain) AgEcon
Robles, Rita Robles; Vannini, Luigi; Nistal, Roberto Alvarez.
The impossibility of carrying out an individual analysis and of finding solutions for each agricultural business, makes advisable the use of classification techniques that allow the identification of groups with common characteristics. The aim of this study is clustering dairy farms in an agricultural region located in the north of Spain, known as "El Paramo". To this end, a survey has been carried out on a representative sample of dairy farms, and subsequently, a Cluster Analysis has been made, which has resulted in five groups of farms being clearly defined from a social and economic point of view.

Re-testing the Resource Curse Hypothesis Using Panel Data and an Improved Measure of Resource Intensity AgEcon
Rambaldi, Alicia N.; Hall, Greg; Brown, Richard P.C..
Most empirical studies of the Resource Curse Hypothesis (RCH) find evidence of a strong negative relationship between a country's natural resource abundance and economic growth. We question the reliability of these findings in relation to the definitions and measures used for both resource intensity and economic growth, and the econometric testing which we consider deficient. We use an alternative, per capita resource rents measure of resource intensity that excludes renewable resources and avoids the circularity and bias of other output-related measures. Using Cluster Analysis, we compare the grouping of countries on the basis of three resource intensity definitions; viz. Sachs and Warner's (1995), Gylfason and Zoega's (2002) and our per capita rents, and...

Chemnitz, Christine; Kuenkel, Nana.
Within the debate about developing countries export competitiveness the increasing importance of food safety and quality standards especially in OECD countries appeals to be one of the major sources of concern. The paper analyses the trade performance of 73 developing countries within the context of stricter SPS measures. The analysis concentrates on the meat and fruit / vegetable sectors as especially high value product sectors are determined by standards. The periods under consideration are 1993- 1995, as a period before the implementation of the SPS Agreement and 2002- 2004, as a period after the implementation. A cluster analysis groups the countries according to the variables "ratio" and "difference" of the export value to OECD countries including the...

Consumer Responses to New Food Quality Information: Are Some Consumers More Sensitive than Others AgEcon
Gao, Zhifeng; Schroeder, Ted C..
In the main approaches used to elicit consumer preference for food attributes, only limited attribute information are present. Though useful for ranking and revealing consumer preferences, these methods are not appropriate when results may be dependent upon the information set presented in the surveys. Studies have found out that additional quality information in surveys significantly affected respondents’ attitudes to or WTP for a specific product attributes. By using cluster analysis we are able to classify respondents into different consumer groups and investigate the difference in responses to new attribute information across consumer groups. Results show that different types of consumer’s WTP for beef steak attributes varies significantly and their...

Zwischen Markt und Moral - Wie wird die deutsche Land- und Ernährungswirtschaft in der Gesellschaft wahrgenommen? AgEcon
Kayser, Maike; Bohm, Justus; Spiller, Achim.

Normative Economics or Improvement of Economic Life at Regional Level in the Czech Republic AgEcon
Klufova, Renata; Friebelova, Jana; Faltova Leitmanova, Ivana.
In the context of improvement of economic life, normative economics has to cope, if it is not only a theoretical construct, with various facts which are brought by the economic reality. Becoming aware of the mutual causality of economic phenomena and processes, the consideration of these facts should first define factually a particular area of interest and then identify formally a direction of its improvement. To reduce regional disparities, the key points are both the selection of disparities identification criterions and the specification of values of these criterions. The paper deals with the area which is nowadays relatively common – regional disparities. The improvement in this sense focuses on the decreasing of differences between particular regions...
