Diet of Hemigrammus marginatus (Characiformes: Characidae) in the Upper Contas River, Diamantina Plateau (Bahia, Brazil) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Barreto,Silvia B.; Silva,André T.; Souza,Fabiane B.; Jucá-Chagas,Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Studies on the composition of fish diet and on how species exploit food resources are especially relevant in tropical freshwater systems, where dietary plasticity is a commonly used strategy. In this study, we analysed the food spectrum and the environmental, seasonal and ontogenetic variations in the diet of a characid species [Hemigrammus marginatus Ellis, 1911 (Characidae)] in the region of the Upper Contas River, in the Diamantina Plateau, Brazil. We verified an omnivorous/invertivorous and opportunistic food habit, with predominance of insects and microcrustaceans, followed by filamentous algae. Seasonality did not alter the food resources used by the species. However, differences were detected in the dominant categories when comparing the...

Hasemania piatan, a new characid species (Characiformes: Characidae) from headwaters of Rio de Contas, Bahia, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Zanata,Angela M; Serra,Jane P.
Hasemania piatan is described from the upper rio de Contas drainage, Bahia, northeastern Brazil. It can be easily distinguished from its congeners by having 18 principal caudal-fin rays. The new species differs further from congeners by a combination of seven branched dorsal-fin rays, six branched pelvic-fin rays, anal-fin base not covered by scales, presence of only five infraorbitals, and presence of a humeral blotch. It also can be distinguished by having 10-13 branched anal-fin rays, 27-32 scales on longitudinal series, 10-12 circumpeduncular scales, and one to three maxillary teeth.

Diet-morphology relationship in the stream-dwelling characid Deuterodon stigmaturus (Gomes, 1947) (Characiformes: Characidae) is partially conditioned by ontogenetic development Neotropical Ichthyology
Dala-Corte,Renato Bolson; Silva,Eliane Regina da; Fialho,Clarice Bernhardt.
ABSTRACT We tested whether interindividual variations in diet composition within a population of Deuterodon stigmaturus can be explained by morphological differences between individuals, and whether diet-morphology relationships are dependent on the ontogenetic development. We analyzed diet of 75 specimens sampled in a coastal stream of Southern Brazil. Variation in stomach content was summarized with a Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA). The retained PCoA axes were tested as response to standard length (SL), and to values of intestine length (IL) and mouth length (ML) independent of body size, using linear mixed-effects models (LMM). The most consumed food items by D. stigmaturus were filamentous algae (41%), terrestrial plants (20.3%), detritus (12%),...
