Soluciones ingenieras para la regeneración de Playa Estero Ciego, Cuba. OceanDocs
Martell Dubois, R.; Hernández Valdés, K.; Caballero Camejo, V.; Henríquez Andrade, J. D..
Estero Ciego beach is located in the tourist area in Holguín province, northeastern coast of Cuba. At present, the beach suffers an erosion process, being observed the appearance of extensive rocky surfaces in the eastern half of the beach as well as a marked deficit of sand in the coast. The objective of this study is to define the engineering solutions required to improve the aesthetic and use conditions of the beach. As main action it is proposed the artificial nourishment of sand, since it constitutes a solution that creates the aesthetic conditions rapidly. As a complement to guarantee the beach stability for a longer period of time, it is also intended to reduce part of the rocky surface that presently exists on the coastline in the eastern half of...

Introducción al problema de la erosión litoral en Urabá (Sector Arboletes-Turbo) Costa Caribe colombiana OceanDocs
Correa, I.D.; Vernette, G..
Shoreline retreat has been the net dominant historical trend along the 145 km-length littoral between Arboletes and Turbo (Southern Caribbean of Colombia). For the last four decades, there were identified in this littoral shoreline retreats of about 50-100m in several places (Uveros, Damaquiel, Zapata, Turbo) and a maximun of 1.6 km in the Punta Rey-Arboletes area, where land losses were of 4.5 k m2, at exceptional rates of 40m/year. The synthesis of the available information suggest that the general “susceptibility” to erosion between Arboletes and Turbo could be related primarily to relative sea level rise, associated to tectonic movements as well as to the effects of mud diapirism and hydroisostacy. In the more critical areas (Arboletes, Turbo), the...

Alternativas ingenieras para la creación de playas artificiales a ambos lados del Hotel Meliá Varadero. OceanDocs
Martell Dubois, R.; Hernández Valdés, K.; Alvarez Cruz, A.; Izquierdo Álvarez, M..
At present, the application of engineering solutions is unavoidable when the dynamic equilibrium of the beaches is irreversibly affected, showing the phenomenon of erosion. The present work proposes engineering solutions that guarantee the necessary conditions for the formation and stabilization of beaches in the low terrace sectors that are located at both sides of Meliá Varadero Hotel.

The spectral wave model, WAM, adapted for applications with high spatial resolution OMA
Monbaliu, J.; Padilla-Hernandez, R.; Hargreaves, J.C.; Carretero Albiach, J.C.; Luo, W.; Sclavo, M.; Günther, H..
New features have been added and several necessary changes have been made to the standard WAM-cycle4 (WAMC4) model code for it to run efficiently when applied to shallow water regions. The restriction of having a source term integration time step smaller than or equal to the propagation time step was relaxed, considerably reducing the computational time needed. An additional reduction in computing time and an increase in accuracy were obtained by introducing a split-frequency time step. There is now a choice of using the octant or quadrant coordinate system for the propagation of the wave energy. The source term integration and, more particularly, the use of a limiter on the energy growth, were studied. For the evaluation of the energy decay in shallow...
