Responses of water mite assemblages (Acari) to environmental parameters at irrigated rice cultivation fields and native lakes Rev. Bras. Zool.
Silva,Guilherme L. da; Metzelthin,Maicon H.; Da-Costa,Tairis; Rocha,Matheus S.; Silva,Darliane E.; Ferla,Noeli J.; Silva,Onilda S. da.
ABSTRACT Many studies have revealed that water mite communities can be affected by the physical and chemical parameters of the water. The similarity between the water ‘mite assemblages in local water bodies and in irrigated rice areas can be a way to measure the water conditions, enabling an assessment of the anthropic impact in the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of water mites in lakes and irrigated rice fields in south Brazil. To accomplish that we characterized the distinctive environments using physical and chemical variables such as pH, turbidity (NTU), water temperature (°C) and dissolved oxygen (mg/L), in order to verify the influence of these abiotic factors on the species composition of water mite communities;...

Mangrove sedimentary characteristics and implications for crab Ucides cordatus (Crustacea, Decapoda, Ucididae) distribution in an estuarine area of the Amazonian region Acta Amazonica
Gomes,José Diego; Abrunhosa,Fernando Araújo; Simith,Darlan de Jesus de Brito; Asp,Nils Edvin.
At the coastal zone sediments, water and organisms interact intensely. At equatorial tidal-dominated coast mangroves are abundant. These areas are well-known for their ecological importance. Considering the mangroves of Atlantic South America, the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus has ecological and economic prominence. High densities of this crab are found on the Amazon coast. This study investigates the sediment distribution of the Bragança mangrove area (Amazon coast, Brazil) and its correlations with vegetation and mangrove crab distribution. Sediments of 47 sites, as well as crabs from sites with different sediment and vegetation, were sampled. Results show that surface sediment of the area is mainly composed by silt (59%), with 21% sand and 20% clay....

Antiherbivory defense mechanisms along an environmental gradient in restinga Acta Botanica
Silva,Maiara Matilde da; Boeger,Maria Regina Torres; Melo Júnior,João Carlos Ferreira de; Santos,Bruno Francisco Sant’Anna dos.
ABSTRACT Plant-herbivore interactions have directed the evolution of defense mechanisms in plants, which can vary intraspecifically according to environmental quality. This study evaluated variation in the production of antiherbivory defenses in plant species distributed along an environmental gradient of restinga. The study was performed in Parque Estadual Acaraí, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Three species of four plant formations with different abiotic conditions were selected for study. Specific leaf area; water, nitrogen and carbon content; and presence of phenols, tannins, lignin and alkaloids, were evaluated in leaves of ten plants per species per plant formation. The results indicated that Symphyopappus casarettoi possesses Low Nutritional...

Characterization of abiotic conditions affecting vegetation distribution in the river Plate coastal plain, Argentina - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v30i4.5875 Biological Sciences
Giménez, Jorge Eloy; UNLP/Argentina; Hurtado, Martín Adolfo; UNLP/Argentina; Marínez, Omar Raúl; UNLP/Argetina.
The river Plate coastal plain is located in northeastern Buenos Aires province, where geological events such as sea transgressions and regressions in the Holocene have produced a stratigraphic column with marine-estuarine, fluviatile and continental sediments, as well as a variety of landforms and soils. The aim of this paper is to describe these different coastal settings and their influence in the distribution of plant communities.

Cordão Formation: loess deposits in the southern coastal plain of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
LOPES,RENATO P.; DILLENBURG,SERGIO R.; SCHULTZ,CESAR L..
ABSTRACT Loess consists of silt-dominated sediments that cover ~10% of the Earth's surface. In southern South America it occurs in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay, and its presence in southern Brazil was never studied in detail. Here is proposed a new lithostratigraphic unit, Cordão Formation, consisting of loess deposits in the southern Brazilian coastal plain. It consists of fine-very fine silt with subordinate sand and clay, found mostly in lowland areas between Pleistocene coastal barriers. These sediments are pale-colored (10YR hue) and forms ~1,5-2,0 meter-thick stable vertical walls. The clay minerals include illite, smectite, interstratified illite/smectite and kaolinite, the coarser fraction is mostly quartz and plagioclase. Caliche and...

Paleoenvironmental evolution of the coastal plain of Southern Brazil: palynological data from a Holocene core in Santa Catarina State Anais da ABC (AABC)
KUHN,LIDIA A.; SOUZA,PAULO A.; CANCELLI,RODRIGO R.; SILVA,WAGNER G.; MACEDO,RENATO B..
ABSTRACT This paper presents a paleoenvironmental reconstruction from palynological analyses of a sedimentary core of Holocene age, drilled at municipality of Garopaba (Santa Catarina), Southern Brazil. A total of 46 samples was collected for palynological analyses in the 450 cm-long core PCSC-3, as also three samples for radiocarbon dating and granulometric analyses. The palynological content includes 84 taxa related to pollen grains of angiosperms (38) and gimnosperm (3), spores of pteridophyta (16) and bryophyta (2), spores of fungi (8), algae (3), acritarchs (3), dinoflagellate cysts (2) and microforaminiferal linings (1). Three specimens of acritarchs are described and illustrated in detail. Three palynological phases were defined based on changes in...

Shallow gas accumulation in sediments of the Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Weschenfelder,Jair; Corrêa,Iran C.S.; Aliotta,Salvador; Pereira,Carla M.; Vasconcelos,Vinicius E.B. de.
A high resolution seismic survey was conducted in the Patos Lagoon, southern Brazil, aboard of the research vessel LARUS of the Fundação Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG). Around 400 km of 3.5 kHz seismic profiles were collected, which provided acoustic signals of good penetration depth and resolution. Seismic anomalies, including turbidity and pocket gas, revealed that gas-charged sediments are common in several areas of the lagoon. The gas accumulations in the Patos Lagoon are controlled by the spatial distribution of the sedimentary facies. Either in 'curtains' or in 'acoustic turbid zones', the main gas accumulations occur in areas with paleotopographic lows related to fluvial channels and valleys developed in the Rio Grande do Sul coastal...

Spatial distribution of water erosion risk in a watershed with eucalyptus and Atlantic Forest Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Beskow,Samuel; Martins,Sérgio Gualberto.
The process of water erosion occurs in watersheds throughout the world and it is strongly affected by anthropogenic influences. Thus, the knowledge of these processes is extremely necessary for planning of conservation efforts. This study was performed in an experimental forested watershed in order to predict the average potential annual soil loss by water erosion using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and a Geographic Information System (GIS), and then compared with soil loss tolerance. All the USLE factors were generated in a distributed approach employing a GIS tool. The layers were multiplied in the GIS framework in order to predict soil erosion rates. Results showed that the average soil loss was 6.2 Mg ha-1 yr-1. Relative to soil loss...
