The Eastern Mediterranean hosts a variety of active cold seep systems, such as gas chimneys, mud volcanoes and pockmarks, in water depths of 500 to 3200 m. As part of the NAUTINIL expedition in 2003, the sediments of cold seeps on the Nile Deep Sea Fan (NDSF) were sampled for the first time for biogeochemical and microbiological analyses. Vesicomyids live in endosymbiosis with sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and therefore need hydrogen sulfide to survive. They can nevertheless live in a wide range of sulfide and oxygen levels and depths, which may explain the exceptional diversity of this clam family in deep-sea habitats. Fauna from deep-sea cold seeps worldwide is dominated by chemosymbiotic metazoans. Recently, investigation of new sites in the Gulf of Guinea yielded numerous new species for which symbiosis was strongly suspected. In this study, symbioses are characterized in five seep-specialist metazoans recently collected from the Guiness site located at ∼600 m depth. Methane-rich fluids arising from organic matter diagenesis in deep sediment layers sustain chemosynthesis-based ecosystems along continental margins. We report on a reconnaissance analysis of the geochemical composition of authigenic carbonates and sediment samples collected from various seepage sites on the Niger deep-sea fan. Our aim has been to investigate whether evidence for the presence of authigenic carbonates and gas hydrates within sediments is discernible from solid-phase sediment geochemistry. Small mytilids of the genus Ildas are related to the large mussels found worldwide at deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. They are therefore keys to a better understanding of the colonization of vents and seeps by symbiont-bearing organisms, but still little is known about their biology. For this study, specimens of a mytilid referred to the genus Idas were collected from various substrates in a cold seep area near the Nile deep sea fan.
