Local perceptions on social-ecological dynamics in Latin America in three community-based natural resource management systems Ecology and Society
Several examples of community-based natural resource management in Latin American social-ecological systems exist in which communities control the management of common-pool resources. Understanding community perceptions of the performance of these systems is essential to involve communities in sustainable management strategies. In this analysis of three areas in Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina, we analyzed the local perceptions of the social and environmental challenges faced by these social-ecological systems and how these challenges and drivers affect their resilience. To do this, we combined prospective structural analysis to unravel stakeholders’ perceptions of each system’s functioning along with network analysis to assess...

Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) is a concept critical to managing social-ecological systems but whose implementation needs strengthening. Scenario planning is one approach that may offer benefits relevant to CBNRM but whose potential is not yet well understood. Therefore, we designed, trialed, and evaluated a scenario-planning method intended to support CBNRM in three cases, located in Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina. Implementing scenario planning was judged as worthwhile in all three cases, although aspects of it were challenging to facilitate. The benefits generated were relevant to strengthening CBNRM: encouraging the participation of local people and using their knowledge, enhanced consideration of and adaptation to future change,...

Responding to Globalization: Impacts of Certification on Colombian Small-Scale Coffee Growers Ecology and Society
Rueda, Ximena; Department of Environmental Earth System Science, School of Earth Sciences, Stanford University; School of Management, Universidad de los Andes; xrueda@alum.mit.edu.
Eco-certification of food and other agricultural products has been promoted as a way of making markets work for sustainability. Certification programs offer a price premium to producers who invest in more sustainable practices. The literature on the impacts of certification has focused primarily on the economic benefits farmers perceive from participating in these schemes. These benefits, however, are often subject to price variability, offering only a partial explanation of why farmers join and stay in certification programs. We evaluated the potential of the Rainforest Alliance certification program to foster more resilient social-ecological systems in the face of globalization. Using the case of Santander, Colombia, and a pair-based comparison of 86...

Adapting prospective structural analysis to strengthen sustainable management and capacity building in community-based natural resource management contexts Ecology and Society
Local communities collectively managing common pool resources can play an important role in sustainable management, but they often lack the skills and context-specific tools required for such management. The complex dynamics of social-ecological systems (SES), the need for management capacities, and communities’ limited empowerment and participation skills present challenges for community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) strategies. We analyzed the applicability of prospective structural analysis (PSA), a strategic foresight tool, to support decision making and to foster sustainable management and capacity building in CBNRM contexts and the modifications necessary to use the tool in such contexts. By testing PSA in three SES in Colombia,...

Avian blood parasites in the National Natural Park Chingaza: high Andes of Colombia Hornero
Rodríguez,Oscar A.; Moya,Helena; Matta,Nubia E..
Birds from the high Andes in the National Natural Park Chingaza, Colombia, were surveyed for blood parasites in April 2002 and March 2003. Of 136 birds examined, representing 40 species of 14 families, 38 were infected with blood parasites. Parasites of the genera Leucocytozoon (21.3% prevalence), Plasmodium (8.1%), Hepatozoon (2.9%), Microfilariae (2.9%) and Haemoproteus (1.5%) were recorded. Twenty five avian species in this survey were examined for blood parasites for the first time and 49 new parasite-host associations were identified. The most striking observation of this study was the high prevalence of Leucocytozoon spp. In the Neotropics, the prevalence of Leucocytozoon spp. has not been reported to be greater than 0.2% and is closely associated...

Lack of evidence for the presence of macaws of the Anodorhynchus genus in the Colombian-Brazilian river basin of the Vaupés Hornero
López-Lanús,Bernabé; Laverde,Oscar; Omena Jr.,Reynier; Olarte,Luis G..
It is generally understood that the Anodorhynchus genus of macaws does not spread north of the Amazon River. However, recent published information suggests that the endangered Hyacinth Macaw Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus may occur in the region of the Papurí River, lower Vaupés, in Amazonian Colombia. This information is hypothetical, based on old reports and observations with imprecise geographical data. Our objective was to confirm the presence of macaws of the genus Anodorhynchus in the lower Vaupés, Colombia, and in nearby Negro River, Brazil. We carried out fieldwork and interviews from September 2004 to July 2005, but we failed to locate the species. Notwithstanding, we received information from 8% of the interviewed members of local ethnic groups...

Marine biodiversity in Colombia: Achievements, status of knowledge, and challenges Gayana
Díaz,Juan M; Acero,Arturo.
Colombia is recognized as a megadiverse country on the basis of the number of terrestrial animal and plant species occurring within its boundaries. However, due to the circumstance that it possesses coasts on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, each of them exhibiting distinct geological, oceanographic, and climatic features, Colombia is perhaps the country with the highest marine biological diversity in South America and one of the most biodiverse in the New World. Although scientific research concerning marine biodiversity of Colombia has a very short history, considerable knowledge has been achieved in the last 10 years, particularly in regard to species inventories and ecosystem characterizations, including thematic mapping. Relatively...

Systematic molecular analysis of hemophilia A patients from Colombia Genet. Mol. Biol.
Yunis,Luz Karime; Linares,Adriana; Cabrera,Edgar; Yunis,Juan J..
Abstract Hemophilia A (HA) is an X-linked recessive disorder and the second most common coagulation disorder with an incidence of 1 in 5,000 live born males. Worldwide, there are 178,500 affected individuals, 60% with the severe form of the disease. Intron 22 and 1 inversions (Inv22 and Inv1) are the most frequent molecular alterations found in severe HA patients with a frequency of 45-50% and 0.5-5%, respectively. We have implemented a systematic cost-effective strategy for the identification of the molecular alteration in HA patients using Inverse shifting-PCR for Inv22 and Inv1, followed by the analysis of the F8 gene coding region by means of high resolution melting (HRM) PCR and Sanger sequencing in Inv22 and Inv1 negative patients. A total of 33 male...

Genetic differences between Chibcha and Non-Chibcha speaking tribes based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups from 21 Amerindian tribes from Colombia Genet. Mol. Biol.
Usme-Romero,Solangy; Alonso,Milena; Hernandez-Cuervo,Helena; Yunis,Emilio J.; Yunis,Juan J..
We analyzed the frequency of four mitochondrial DNA haplogroups in 424 individuals from 21 Colombian Amerindian tribes. Our results showed a high degree of mtDNA diversity and genetic heterogeneity. Frequencies of mtDNA haplogroups A and C were high in the majority of populations studied. The distribution of these four mtDNA haplogroups from Amerindian populations was different in the northern region of the country compared to those in the south. Haplogroup A was more frequently found among Amerindian tribes in northern Colombia, while haplogroup D was more frequent among tribes in the south. Haplogroups A, C and D have clinal tendencies in Colombia and South America in general. Populations belonging to the Chibcha linguistic family of Colombia and other...

Genetic variants in the G gamma-globin promoter modulate fetal hemoglobin expression in the Colombian population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Fong,Cristian; Mendoza,Yesica; Barreto,Guillermo.
Abstract Fetal hemoglobin (HbF) is a determining factor for the development of sickle cell anemia. High HbF levels lower the intensity of symptoms of this disease. HbF levels can vary in patients with sickle cell anemia and individuals without the disease. The purpose of this study was to identify the genetic variants in the G gamma-globin gene promoter that can modulate HbF expression in patients with sickle cell anemia and healthy individuals from Colombia. In total, 413 bp of the G gamma-globin gene promoter were sequenced in 60 patients with sickle cell anemia and 113 healthy individuals. The allelic and genotype frequencies of the identified variants were compared between individuals with low and high HbF for both patients and healthy individuals. In...

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups in 1526 unrelated individuals from 11 Departments of Colombia Genet. Mol. Biol.
Yunis,Juan J.; Yunis,Emilio J..
The frequencies of four mitochondrial Native American DNA haplogroups were determined in 1526 unrelated individuals from 11 Departments of Colombia and compared to the frequencies previously obtained for Amerindian and Afro-Colombian populations. Amerindian mtDNA haplogroups ranged from 74% to 97%. The lowest frequencies were found in Departments on the Caribbean coast and in the Pacific region, where the frequency of Afro-Colombians is higher, while the highest mtDNA Amerindian haplogroup frequencies were found in Departments that historically have a strong Amerindian heritage. Interestingly, all four mtDNA haplogroups were found in all Departments, in contrast to the complete absence of haplogroup D and high frequencies of haplogroup A in Amerindian...
