SPATIAL RICHNESS PATTERNS OF SOFT-BOTTOM FISH IN THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN CONTINENTAL SHELF AND SLOPE Acta biol.Colomb.
GARCÍA.,Camilo B..
ABSTRACT This study presents a spatial analysis of species richness of soft-bottom bony and cartilaginous fish species in the Colombian Caribbean. The dataset consisted of 625 species distributed among 15651 georeferenced occurrences. The global richness completeness analysis suggests that the list is close to completion but that probably more species await being registered at greater depths. In spatial terms, our knowledge of fish richness remains incomplete as none of the spatial units, in which the general area was divided reached 100 % completeness and few reached 70 % or higher completeness probably due to the incidence of numerous rare species. The Guajira, Palomino, Tayrona and Golfo de Salamanca zones, displayed the highest observed and predicted...

MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY OF THE NERITIDAE (GASTROPODA: NERITIMORPHA) BASED ON THE MITOCHONDRIAL GENES CYTOCHROME OXIDASE I (COI) AND 16S RRNA Acta biol.Colomb.
QUINTERO-GALVIS,JULIAN; RAQUEL-CASTRO,LYDA.
The family Neritidae has representatives in tropical and subtropical regions that occur in a variety of environments, and its known fossil record dates back to the late Cretaceous. However there have been few studies of molecular phylogeny in this family. We performed a phylogenetic reconstruction of the family Neritidae using the COI (722 bp) and the 16S rRNA (559 bp) regions of the mitochondrial genome. Neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference were performed. The best phylogenetic reconstruction was obtained using the COI region, and we consider it an appropriate marker for phylogenetic studies within the group. Consensus analysis (COI +16S rRNA) generally obtained the same tree topologies and confirmed that the genus Nerita is...

Seasonal incidence of red tides in the Bay of Santa Marta and adjacent sectors, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Arbeláez M,Natalia; Franco-Angulo,Julián; Espinosa,Luisa F.
ABSTRACT In order to describe the environmental and climatic conditions associated with the occurrence of six red tide events between 2010 and 2017, in Santa Marta (Colombian Caribbean), biological and physicochemical information during these events was collected. Additionally, precipitation data and the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) between 2010 and 2017 were consulted. The results showed that the dinoflagellate Cochlodinium sp. was responsible for three events that occurred in October 2010, October 2011 and November 2015, reaching a maximum densities of 5 x 106 cells L-1. These events were associated with an increase in rainfalls and seawater surface temperature (29.7 °C) and a decrease in salinity (< 35.5). The Mesodinium cf. rubrum ciliate was...

POPULATION STRUCTURE OF GRENADIER FISH COELORINCHUS CAELORHINCUS IN DEEP WATERS OF THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN COAST Boletín de Investigaciones
Paramo,Jorge; Motta,Jasney; Hoz,Javier De La.
ABSTRACT The objective of the study is to describe the patterns of spatial distribution and size structure of Coelorinchus caelorhincus in deep-sea waters of Colombian Caribbean. The samples were collected with trawling in depths between 200 and 550 m. Statistically significant differences in the sizes of the sexes were found, indicating sexual dimorphism. The length structure by depth strata showed a size increase with depth for both females and males. The length at sexual maturity in females was 17.238 cm TL. The spatial distribution indicates that in the northeastern area the higher aggregations were off the coast of the Magdalena River, off Santa Marta and Riohacha cities. In the southwestern area the higher aggregations were towards the northern part...

PRIMER REGISTRO DE PLAGIODISCUS NERVATUS GRUNOW (BACILLARIOPHYCEAE) EN LA REGIÓN COSTERA DEL CARIBE COLOMBIANO* Boletín de Investigaciones
Arbeláez M.,Natalia; Vidal,Luis Alfonso.
The presence of the species Plagiodiscus nervatus is reported for first time in the Colombian Caribbean coastal sea. Three specimens were found, two cells in Bahia Gaira on August 2000 and 2001 in surface samples, the other cell in Bahía Chengue on May 2012 at 2 m deep. The observations showed two particular forms of the species, one with nervature and the other without it, both larger in sizes compared with those reported by other authors for the Caribbean Sea and elsewhere in the world. It is extremely important to report additional species to complement and perform inventory and lists of the species present in the area.

THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT IN CORAL REEFS OF THE TAYRONA NATIONAL NATURAL PARK (COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN) IN RESPONSE TO SEASONAL UPWELLING* Boletín de Investigaciones
Bayraktarov,Elisa; Bastidas-Salamanca,Martha L; Wild,Christian.
Coral reefs are subjected to physical changes in their surroundings including wind velocity, water temperature, and water currents that can affect ecological processes on different spatial and temporal scales. However, the dynamics of these physical variables in coral reef ecosystems are poorly understood. In this context, Tayrona National Natural Park (TNNP) in the Colombian Caribbean is an ideal study location because it contains coral reefs and is exposed to seasonal upwelling that strongly changes all key physical factors mentioned above. This study therefore investigated wind velocity and water temperature over two years, as well as water current velocity and direction for representative months of each season at a windand wave-exposed and a sheltered...

LA CLASE CAUDOFOVEATA (MOLLUSCA) EN EL MAR CARIBE COLOMBIANO* Boletín de Investigaciones
Gracia C.,Adriana; Fontalvo,Erlenis; Gámez,Luis Carlos.
Five classes of marine mollusks, including Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Cephalopoda, Scaphopoda, and Polyplacophora, have been recorded inhabiting the Colombian Caribbean Sea. Other classes with a basal position within the phylum such as Caudofoveata and Solenogastres have remained overlooked, as a result of their body shape (worm-like with no shell), small sizes (Caudofoveata 1.5 to 140 mm length), and limited taxonomic information for identifications. The presence of Caudofoveata species on the continental margin of the Colombian Caribbean Sea was evidenced through several studies conducted by Invemar between 2007 and 2012. Samples were collected from localities between Gulf of Morrosquillo and La Guajira, in a bathymetrical range from 3 to 1010 m depth. These...

Trash in paradise: marine debris on the beaches of San Andrés Island, Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Gavio,Brigitte; Vargas-Llanos,July Paulin; Mancera-Pineda,José Ernesto.
ABSTRACT San Andres Island is one of the main touristic places in Colombia, and its main attractions are its sandy beaches and the marine coastal ecosystems, such as coral reef and seagrass beds. However improper behavior of both residents and tourists on solid residue disposal may threaten not only the aesthetic of the island´s beaches, but also poses risk to marine life. The objective of this research was to assess the amount of litter on the main beaches of the island. We surveyed three popular beaches for ten weeks. We collected 9894 units of litter, equivalent to a weight of 23 212.47 g. Beach cleanliness was estimated using the Clean Coast Index, and two of the three sites resulted “extremely dirty”, while the third was classified as “dirty”. The...

DYNAMICS OF A MACROALGAL ROCKY INTERTIDAL COMMUNITY IN THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN Boletín de Investigaciones
García,Camilo B.; Díaz Pulido,Guillermo.
The macroalgal intertidal community at a tropical location (Punta de la Loma, Colombian Caribbean) was monitored at irregular intervals from 1992 to 1995. The highly diverse macroalgal community was relatively invariant in cover, taxa and biomass from small spatial scales (square centimeters). At larger spatial scales (square meters), however, there was a small but definitive seasonal pulse in dominance and composition. Sand intrusions over the rocky intertidal represents a b disturbance reducing macroalgal cover during the dry season. Interannual variation was also detected. La Punta de la Loma appears to be influenced by the regional upwelling conditions.
