Habitat Shape, Species Invasions, and Reserve Design: Insights from Simple Models Ecology and Society
Cumming, Graeme; University of Florida; cummingg@wec.ufl.edu.
Species invasions have become a major threat to global biodiversity. We currently lack a general theory of species invasions that allows us to make useful predictions about when and where invasions will occur, whether they will be successful, and whether they will alter ecosystem function in invaded habitats. One line of enquiry in developing such a theory is to focus on the characteristics of successful invaders. A second, complementary approach is to examine habitats of interest more closely and ask how the properties of the habitat that is being invaded affect the likelihood of invasion success. In this paper, I consider the importance of habitat shape (also termed "habitat topology" or "habitat geometry") as a variable affecting the dispersal and...

Patch Size and Population Density: the Effect of Immigration Behavior Ecology and Society
Bowman, Jeff; Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources; jeff.bowman@mnr.gov.on.ca; Cappuccino, Naomi; Carleton University; ncappucc@ccs.carleton.ca; Fahrig, Lenore; Carleton University; lfahrig@ccs.carleton.ca.
Many habitat fragmentation experiments make the prediction that animal population density will be positively related to fragment, or patch, size. The mechanism that is supposed to result in this prediction is unclear, but several recent reviews have demonstrated that population density often is negatively related to patch size. Immigration behavior is likely to have an important effect on population density for species that do not show strong edge effects, for species that have low emigration rates, and during short-term habitat fragmentation experiments. We consider the effect that different kinds of immigration behaviors will have on population density and we demonstrate that only a minority of possible scenarios produce positive density vs. patch size...

A cytological study of the O5 chromosomal inversion of Drosophila subobscura (Diptera, Drosophilidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mestres,Francesc; Figueras,Maria Teresa; Serra,Luís.
The O5 chromosomal inversion has been a cornerstone for understanding different aspects of the American colonization by Drosophila subobscura. To obtain more information of this evolutionary event it is important to know the pattern of bands of this inversion in detail. Comparing this pattern with that of D. melanogaster it is possible to predict which genes are located inside or close to the O5 inversion and use them as genetic markers. In this study, the complete band pattern of the O5 inversion is presented. Furthermore, the most important genes located inside it have been predicted. Finally, a constriction located close to the proximal breakage point of the O5 inversion has been observed many times and its possible genetic significance is discussed.

Taxonomy, distribution and population structure of invasive Corbiculidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) in the Suquía River basin, Córdoba, Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Reyna,Paola B.; Morán,Ariana G.; Tatián,Marcos.
Invasive species are one of the most significant causes of biodiversity loss and changes in ecosystem services, which underlines the importance of their detection and their study. The Asian clams (Corbiculidae) are invasive organisms that accidentally entered the La Plata River, Argentina, presumably in the 1960s. The objectives of the present study were to identify the corbiculid species and to determine their distribution at several locations along the Suquía River basin, an extended area in central Argentina. In addition, population structure was evaluated monthly during one year, at a site in the city of Córdoba that is characterized by high human influence. The presence of Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) and Corbicula largillierti (Philippi, 1844)...

Two decades of colonization of the urban environment of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, by Drosophila paulistorum (Diptera, Drosophilidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Garcia,Ana Cristina L.; Valiati,Victor Hugo; Gottschalk,Marco S.; Rohde,Cláudia; Valente,Vera Lúcia da S..
Drosophila paulistorum Dobzhansky & Pavan, 1949 had initially been considered absent in anthropogenically disturbed environments, but in 1985 the detection of the species in Porto Alegre city, southern Brazil, suggested its potential to colonize new habitats and laid the foundations for ecologic studies on this species' populations. This study followed the variations in D. paulistorum populations in this town almost 20 years after its first local record. Drosophilid specimens were collected in sites with different urbanization grades and the results point to the expressive decline in D. paulistorum populations in Porto Alegre. This decline may be linked to urban growth and to naturally driven population decline, as imputed to climatic changes like...

This study [...] was carried out from June 1998 to January 2000 and enabled the assessment of the scientific knowledge on the biology, ecology and distribution of the Annelida Polychaeta sedentaria: Ficopomatus enigmaticus. [...] In order to better determine the characteristics of this species' environment and development cycle, a study was conducted in the worksite of the marina of Vannes. This study, mostly biological, was completed by a technological study on the fighting techniques (antifouling paints) used against the damage made by this worm on the boat hulls. In addition, this document presents some recommendations to follow in order to limit, or stop, the development of this "pollution".

Prolonged recovery time after eruptive disturbance of a deep-sea hydrothermal vent community ArchiMer
Mullineaux, L. S.; Mills, S. W.; Le Bris, N.; Beaulieu, S. E.; Sievert, S. M.; Dykman, L. N..
Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are associated with seafloor tectonic and magmatic activity, and the communities living there are subject to disturbance. Eruptions can be frequent and catastrophic, raising questions about how these communities persist and maintain regional biodiversity. Prior studies of frequently disturbed vents have led to suggestions that faunal recovery can occur within 2–4 years. We use an unprecedented long-term (11-year) series of colonization data following a catastrophic 2006 seafloor eruption on the East Pacific Rise to show that faunal successional changes continue beyond a decade following the disturbance. Species composition at nine months post-eruption was conspicuously different than the pre-eruption ‘baseline' state, which had...

High environmental stress and productivity increase functional diversity along a deep‐sea hydrothermal vent gradient ArchiMer
Alfaro Lucas, Joan Manel; Pradillon, Florence; Zeppilli, Daniela; Michel, Loic; Martinez‐arbizu, P; Tanaka, H; Foviaux, M; Sarrazin, Jozee.
Productivity and environmental stress are major drivers of multiple biodiversity facets and faunal community structure. Little is known on their interacting effects on early community assembly processes in the deep sea (>200 m), the largest environment on Earth. However, at hydrothermal vents productivity correlates, at least partially, with environmental stress. Here, we studied the colonization of rock substrata deployed along a deep‐sea hydrothermal vent gradient at four sites with and without direct influence of vent fluids at 1700 m depth in the Lucky Strike vent field (Mid‐Atlantic Ridge, MAR). We examined in detail the composition of faunal communities (>20 µm) established after two years and evaluated species and functional patterns. We...

Adult and larval traits as determinants of geographic range size among tropical reef fishes ArchiMer
Luiz, Osmar J.; Allen, Andrew P.; Robertson, D. Ross; Floeter, Sergio R.; Kulbicki, Michel; Vigliola, Laurent; Becheler, Ronan; Madin, Joshua S..
Most marine organisms disperse via ocean currents as larvae, so it is often assumed that larval-stage duration is the primary determinant of geographic range size. However, empirical tests of this relationship have yielded mixed results, and alternative hypotheses have rarely been considered. Here we assess the relative influence of adult and larval-traits on geographic range size using a global dataset encompassing 590 species of tropical reef fishes in 47 families, the largest compilation of such data to date for any marine group. We analyze this database using linear mixed-effect models to control for phylogeny and geographical limits on range size. Our analysis indicates that three adult traits likely to affect the capacity of new colonizers to survive...

Implication of the Type IV Secretion System in the Pathogenicity of Vibrio tapetis, the Etiological Agent of Brown Ring Disease Affecting the Manila Clam Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Rahmani, Alexandra; Delavat, François; Lambert, Christophe; Le Goic, Nelly; Dabas, Eric; Paillard, Christine; Pichereau, Vianney.
Vibrio tapetis is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes infections of mollusk bivalves and fish. The Brown Ring Disease (BRD) is an infection caused by V. tapetis that primarily affects the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. Recent studies have shown that a type IV secretion system (T4SS) gene cluster is exclusively found in strains of V. tapetis pathogenic to clams. However, whether the T4SS is implicated or not during the infection process remains unknown. The aim of this study was to create and characterize a V. tapetis T4SS null mutant, obtained by a near-complete deletion of the virB4 gene, in order to determine the role of T4SS in the development of BRD. This study demonstrated that the T4SS is neither responsible for the loss of hemocyte adhesion...

Colonization patterns along the equatorial West African margin: Implications for functioning and diversity maintenance of bathyal and abyssal communities ArchiMer
Menot, Lenaick; Crassous, Philippe; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Galeron, Joelle; Khripounoff, Alexis; Sibuet, M..
In the framework of the deep-sea environmental programme BIOZAIRE (Ifremer-Total), colonization trays were deployed for 283-433 days at three sites along the equatorial West African margin: ZA at 1300-m depth, ZC at 4000-m depth far from the Congo canyon and ZD at 4000-m depth close to the Congo canyon. The experiments aimed at determining the influence of depth and local environmental settings on macrofaunal colonization patterns and organic carbon degradation rates. The trays were filled with glass beads and this artificial substrate was enriched with ground particulate organic matter in a gradient of 0%, 0.34%, 1.02% and 3.43% organic carbon. The highest rates of organic carbon degradation ranged, according to the duration of the experiments, from 1.59...

Bacterial colonization of winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus fed live feed enriched with three different commercial diets ArchiMer
Seychelles, L. H.; Audet, C.; Tremblay, R.; Lemarchand, K.; Pernet, Fabrice.
The proliferation of bacteria in intensive aquaculture systems may be responsible for poor growth and mass mortality of marine fish larvae. Essential fatty acids provided in the diet could protect larvae by modulation of the immune response via arachidonic acid (AA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus larvae were fed rotifers Brachionus plicatilis enriched with three commercial diets containing different fatty acid profiles. Bacterial colonization on the gills and skin and in the intestinal lumen was evaluated at the end of the rotifer feeding period (day 26), and growth was surveyed until metamorphosis. At 26 days post hatching, larvae fed rotifers containing the higher AA content and with a higher...

Etude experimentale de la colonisation de surfaces par les bacteries, en eau de mer circulante ArchiMer
Fera, P; Prieur, D.
Before the building of an (OTEC) power plant, and experimental station was built near the entrance of the Bay of Brest in order to do preliminary studies. Using these facilities, the bacterial colonization of three substrata (stainless steel UB6, aluminium AG4, polycarbonate filters) was studied in an open seawater system, with a speed of 0,7 m s super(-1). The study was performed between May 1983 and May 1984, including seven experiments of 15 days each. Bacteria colonizing the metallic surfaces were counted by scanning electron microscopy, and bacteria colonizing the polycarbonate filters counted by epifluorescence microscopy. On the three substrata, bacterial colonization occurred in three successive stages: initial colonization, sometimes unsteady...

Colonization of synthetic sponges at the deep-sea Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge): a first insight ArchiMer
Baldrighi, Elisa; Zeppilli, Daniela; Crespin, Rosalie; Chauvaud, Pierre; Pradillon, Florence; Sarrazin, Jozee.
The main objective of the present study was to investigate invertebrate colonization processes at deep-sea hydrothermal vents in response to environmental factors and to the presence of complex artificial substrata (i.e., synthetic sponges). We set out a pilot experiment at 1700 m depth on the Lucky Strike vent field (Eiffel Tower, Mid-Atlantic Ridge). Synthetic sponges were deployed in 2011 at five sites along a gradient of hydrothermal activity and were recovered in 2013, and the composition of macro- and meiofauna was assessed on four of them. The influence of temperature and fluid inputs on colonizer faunal abundance and diversity was analyzed. Faunal abundance and diversity decreased with increasing distance from vent emission. The colonizers were...

The study is illustrated by photographs, consideration being given to the stages in the establishment of colonies on shells and pebbles. Stages of implantation and the types of construction thereby formed are described, and the process of growth in height examined. Implantation of other individuals, hydrodynamics, tube density, temperature and age or average sizes of the population are thought to influence this growth. The surface area occupied by the constructions may be extended by colonization of pebby or shelly areas or by transportation of parts broken away. Destruction and death of the constructions may be extended by colonization of pebby or shelly areas the constructions is described. It was found that the reefs underwent a particular mode of...
