Social Resilience and Commercial Fishers’ Responses to Management Changes in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Ecology and Society
Sutton, Stephen G; James Cook University; stephen.sutton@jcu.edu.au; Tobin, Renae C; James Cook University; renae.tobin@jcu.edu.au.
Understanding how social resilience influences resource users’ responses to policy change is important for ensuring the sustainability of social–ecological systems and resource-dependent communities. We use the conceptualization and operationalization of social resilience proposed by Marshall and Marshall (2007) to investigate how resilience level influenced commercial fishers’ perceptions about and adaptation to the 2004 rezoning of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. We conducted face-to-face interviews with 114 commercial and charter fishers to measure their social resilience level and their responses and adaptation strategies to the 2004 zoning plan. Fishers with higher resilience were more likely to believe that the...

Micro-economic drivers of profitability in an ITQ-managed fishery: An analysis of the Queensland Coral Reef Fin-Fish Fishery ArchiMer
Thebaud, Olivier; Innes, James; Norman-lopez, Ana; Slade, Stephanie; Cameron, Darren; Cannard, Toni; Tickell, Sharon; Kung, John; Kerrigan, Brigid; Williams, Lew; Little, L. Richard.
An economic survey of the commercial operators currently active in the Queensland Coral Reef Fin-Fish Fishery has been carried out, as part of a research project aimed at evaluating alternative management options for this fishery. This paper presents the background analysis used as a basis to develop the sampling design for this survey. The background analysis focuses on activity patterns of the fleet based on effort and catch information, as well as patterns of quota ownership. Based on this information, a fishing business profile describing the micro-economic structure of fishing operations is developed. This profile, in conjunction with the qualitative information gained in undertaking the economic surveys, allows preliminary understanding of the key...

La flotte de pêche commerciale bretonne ArchiMer
Talidec, Catherine; Berthou, Patrick; Jezequel, Michele; Lespagnol, Patrick.
The annual activity calendars of the 2,000 Breton fishing boats registered in the national POP file (with the exception of seafaring ships: 35 ocean-going tuna boats and 2 ships from Saint-Malo) were reconstituted for the year 1994 through surveys of the owners of these ships. Resorting to this method was necessary to overcome the weak statistical coverage of coastal fishing activity that is practiced within the 12 miles of territorial waters. This collection of information made it possible to build a database that contains, for each boat, the various trades practiced during the year 1994 and, if applicable, the periods of inactivity. By "trade", we mean the putting to use of a fishing vessel in order to catch one or several target species, in a given...

Hansen, J.E.; Garciarena, A.D..
As part of the research programs performed yearly at the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP, Mar del Plata, Argentina) some important basic data about the commercial fisheries usually included in internal reports are registered. This formal paper is a review and summary of size and age composition estimates of commercial catches (discards included) of Northern Argentine anchovy (34ºS-41ºS) obtained between 1990-2011. The basic data resulting from the examination of 521 samples from fishing vessels included 62,466 fish length measurements and 26,667 valid age readings from which the corresponding 22 annual age-length keys were built. The annual estimates of the individual total length-total weight relation parameters and of...

Cordo, H.D..
Catch per unit of effort (CPUE)analysis of the Argentine surimi fleet is a routine work to estimate abundance indices of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis. Several analysis of this fishery suggest that, as of the years when intensive fishing by foreign and national fleets started, the resource has suffered a marked decline. When calculating the CPUE it is common practice to take into acount only trips and fishing operations with high catches of the target species fishing operations directed to other species are not considered to avoid underestimations. Therefore, in order to include a percentage of catch of the analyzed species higher than a subjective value, available data are filtered. However, because only operations with high yield are...

OceanDocs
Lasta, M.L.; Bremec, C..
Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King Broderip, 1832): A new fishery in the Argentine continental shelf. We present preliminary information on a new fishery of patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King Broderip, 1832) in the Argentine Continental Shelf. A research program was conducted jointly by INIDEP and a fishing company during 1995 with the F/V Erin Bruce. The vessel, fishing equipment and processing on board are described. A total of 7235 fishing tows were performed during 246 days at sea. Seven new beds were located between 38º 50' S and 42º 30' S, along the 100-m isobath. Beds are discrete. Differences in the size structure by bed suggest that recruitment consists of sporadic pulses. Proportion of scallops and invertebrate by-catch...

Dato, C.V.; Villarino, M.F.; Cañete, G.R..
Discards of the commercial fleet in the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) directed to hake Merluccius hubbsi were estimated in weight and number of individuals. The dynamics of the ice-chilling and freezer fleets per area and quarter and processes of discarding were analyzed. The estimation method was based on the comparison of landings and surveys length composition, the latter filtered by the selectivity of the mesh used by the commercial fleet to rebuild the length distribution of catches. It is concluded that discards had an annual variation of 42,000 t-148,000 t in the 1990-1997 period, which represented between 30 and 50 in weight and 11-24 in number of actual catches. The analysis of age groups affected by discards showed that over 90 corresponded to...

Dato, C.V.; Bambill, G.A.; Cañete, G.R.; Villarino, M.F.; Aubone, A..
Based on the comparison between length composition of landings and that of research cruises, filtered by the selectivity of the mesh used by the commercial fleet, to rebuild length distribution of catches, an indirect quantitative method was developed and used to estimate, in weight and number, the individuals discarded by the commercial fleet south of 41° S. Discards ranged between 15,563 and 46,113 annual tons in the 1986-1993 period which represented 10-13% in weight and 28-32% in number of actual catches, composed of around 87% of individuals age group 1, 12% of age group 2 and the rest of individuals age groups 0 and 3.

Moussa, A; Nguer, A.T.; Thiam, I..

Irusta, G.; Pérez, M.; Renzi, M.A.; Castrucci, R..
The activity of fishing fleets for hake Merluccius hubbsi south of 41°S Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic, is described. In order to establish the standard group of vessels, density indices derived from research cruises and ice-chilling fleets were related. Group four 1,400-1,800 HP related better to the abundance trend. Also, two series of indices associated to different fractions of the population were estimated: juveniles age 2) and adults age 3-5. Finally, a total catch per unit effort CPUE for the region south of 41°S, which showed a declining trend during the period considered 1991-1997, was calculated.

Wood, C.D; Boustead, P.; Mora, Y.; Grijalva, M..

Periodo 1990-1997 OceanDocs
Dato, C.V.; Villarino, M.F.; Cañete, G.R..
Since 1990, the Argentine commercial fleet directed to hake (Merluccius hubbsi) has obtained more than 70 of catches South of 41°S while to the North of this latitude the activity concentrated between 39°S and 41°S Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic. Bearing in mind the different characteristics of ice-chilling and freezer fleets, their activities were analyzed separately. Considering the relative percentages of catches declared in fishery statistics, the dynamics of each fleet is described per quarter and year. Special reference is made to 1997 when a closed area to protect juveniles was introduced between 44°S-47°S and 62°W-65°W. The freezer fleet activity, concentrated South of 41°S, especially South of 43°S, was stable throughout the period. It grouped around...

Garciarena, A.D.; Buratti, C.C..
The fishing activity on Argentine anchovy Northern stock (34º S-41º S) during the 1993-2011 period was studied (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The basic data derived from the commercial fleet catch records. Annual landings reached a minimum of 5,900 t in 1999 and a maximum of 36,300 t in 2004. The largest catches, performed by the offshore ice chilling fleet, averaged 11,800 t. As of 2003 it was observed an increase in the coastal ships share and a decrease in that of the inshore fleet that in 2004-2011 represented less than 3% of total landings. The major activity, developed between 37º S-41º S in the August-November period, had Mar del Plata as the main port of landing. The average catch per trip and the mean HP of ships, that as of 1999 increased in...
