Ecological strategies of Al-accumulating and non-accumulating functional groups from the cerrado sensu stricto Anais da ABC (AABC)
Souza,Marcelo C. de; Bueno,Paula C.P.; Morellato,Leonor P.C.; Habermann,Gustavo.
The cerrado's flora comprises aluminum-(Al) accumulating and non-accumulating plants, which coexist on acidic and Al-rich soils with low fertility. Despite their existence, the ecological importance or biological strategies of these functional groups have been little explored. We evaluated the leaf flushing patterns of both groups throughout a year; leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Al, total flavonoids and polyphenols; as well as the specific leaf area (SLA) on young and mature leaves within and between the groups. In Al-accumulating plants, leaf flushed throughout the year, mainly in May and September; for non-accumulating plants, leaf flushing peaked at the dry-wet seasons transition. However, these behaviors could not be associated with...

Floristics and Reproductive Phenology of Trees and Bushes in Central West Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
ASSUNÇÃO,VIVIAN A.; CASAGRANDE,JOSÉ C.; SARTORI,ÂNGELA L.B..
Environmental conditions such as temperature, soil, photoperiodic factors and precipitation can determine the physical environment favoring the occurrence of given species and interfere with the reproductive period of plants. This work involved monthly excursions to a slope in the Serra de Maracaju between December 2009 and November 2010. Samples were collected in eight 25 x 50 m plots, transverse to the slope, totaling 1 ha sampled. Floristic richness included 79 species distributed into 58 genera and 31 families. Floristic Similarity Analysis and Principal Component Analysis showed the occurrence of two plant formations on the slope: seasonal deciduous forest andcerradão on the eutrophic soil of the slope. Flowering and fruiting occured in the rainy...

The role of phytophysiognomies and seasonality on the structure of ground-dwelling anuran (Amphibia) in the Pampa biome, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARAGNO,FRANCIÉLE P.; SANTOS,TIAGO G.; CECHIN,SONIA Z..
ABSTRACTConsidering that habitat use by amphibians is related both with climate and environmental features, we tested the hypothesis that anuran assemblages found in different phytophysiognomies and in different seasons vary in structure. Additionally, we searched for species which can be indicators of habitat and seasons. The study was conducted in the Pampa biome, southern Brazil. Sampling was done through pitfall traps placed in three phytophysiognomies: grassland, ecotone grassland/forest; and forest. The seasonality factor was created by grouping months in warn and cold seasons. Sixteen species were found and the assemblages were influenced both by phytophysiognomies and climatic seasonality. In a paired comparison, the three phytophysiognomies...

Bird community as an indicator of biodiversity: results from quantitative surveys in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
VIELLIARD,JACQUES M. E..
This short review presents the results obtained in several localities of Brazil on the composition of forest bird communities. Data were collected since the late 80's, after we introduced a new methodology of quantitative survey, based on acoustic identification and unlimited-radius point census. Although these data are still scattered, they show uniquely precise and coherently comparative patterns of composition of forest bird communities. Our methodology has the advantage of being absolutely non-disturbing, highly efficient in the field and immediately processed. Results confirm that the structure of a bird community is a good indicator of biodiversity, particularly useful where biodiversity is high. Many of these data are available only in unpublished...

Zanella,Noeli; Paula,Almir de; Guaragni,Samara Arsego; Machado,Leonardo de Souza.
The northern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul was extensively deforested in recent decades, and only isolated fragments of the original vegetation remain. The Parque Natural Municipal de Sertão comprises a remnant of Atlantic Rain Forest, one of the largest fragments in northern Rio Grande do Sul. This study examined the diversity of the herpetofauna, focusing on environmental distribution, seasonality and species richness. We used complementary methods of sampling such as pitfall traps, active search and occasional encounters. We recorded 23 species of frogs, nine snakes and one lizard. With respect to the relationship between amphibians and reptiles and the structural and abiotic factors of the environment, the edge of the fragment showed higher...

Anurans of a riparian forest in Sao Carlos, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sabbag,Ariadne Fares; Zina,Juliana.
We surveyed anuran amphibians in a riparian forest fragment of the Córrego do Espraiado, located at the Universidade Federal de São Carlos, Municipality of São Carlos, state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. During March 2009 and February 2010 we did weekly surveys in which we recorded 13 anuran species. The species showed a seasonal reproductive activity. In addition, we found a positive correlation between the number of reproductively active species and photoperiod. We also found that the studied community was more similar to those of transitional areas between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado than those of the nearby Cerrado fragments.

Use of a species-rich and highly eutrophic tropical estuary in the South Atlantic by Pleuronectiformes (Teleostei: Acanthopterygii) Biota Neotropica
Silva-Junior,Luiz Constantino; Santos,Sérgio Ricardo; Macedo,Márcio Chagas; Nunan,Gustavo Wilson; Vianna,Marcelo.
Abstract: A total of 1,471 specimens of 16 species of flatfishes (Pleuronectiformes) were caught during 48 sampling campaigns between July 2005 and June 2007 at ten stations in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Paralichthyidae was the dominant family, with Etropus crossotus as the dominant species. The outer stations, especially those on the western side of the lower estuary, were distinguished as a result of their higher abundance of flatfishes and number of species. The spatial distribution of E. crossotus and its population structure indicate that this species is an estuarine resident despite the apparent reduction in its area of occupation within the estuarine complex. Among the other species, nine were classified as marine stragglers (Achirus...

Oliveira,Jane C. F.; Santos,Rafael dos; Lopes-Silva,Mateus Leite; Barros,Lorena da Penha Vasconcelos; Risse-Quaioto,Bárbara; Militão,Cátia Moura; Fatorelli,Pedro; Belmoch,Flávia A. L.; Castro,Thiago Marcial de; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
Abstract: Data on the composition of local reptile assemblages in several Brazilian ecosystems can still be considered relatively restricted in scope in most cases. In this study, we conducted surveys in the Serra das Torres Natural Monument, located in the municipalities of Atílio Vivacqua, Muqui, and Mimoso do Sul, using the Rapid Assessments method (RAP) during 30 days in the rainy season of 2018. We sampled actively for approximately 1320 hours with a 6-10 person crew, supplemented by 720 hours of passive sampling (30 bucket-days) using pitfall traps with drift fences. We recorded 34 reptile species during our sampling method (2 amphisbaenid, 11 lizards, and 21 snakes) and an occasional encounter, after the end of sampling, that added a chelonian...

Ecological aspects of the surf-zone ichthyofauna of Itamambuca Beach, Ubatuba, SP Biota Neotropica
Gondolo,Guilherme Fernandez; Mattox,George Mendes Taliaferro; Cunningham,Patricia Teresa Monteiro.
Sandy beaches are among the most extensive environments in Brazil and are generally threatened by disorderly urban growth due to their location along the coast, where human populations tend to concentrate. This is especially true in southeastern Brazil, where the largest urban areas are located. Thus, better knowledge regarding these natural resources is of considerable importance. The surf zone of sandy beaches is inhabited by a number of fish species, including juveniles seeking both food and shelter from predators. An ecological survey was conducted in the surf zone of Itamambuca beach in the city of Ubatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, in order to evaluate the composition, structure and dynamics of the fish fauna using community descriptors. Plant reproductive phenology and dispersal patterns after natural regeneration in a limestone mining spoil banks BABT
Frenedozo,Rita de Cássia.
Studies were carried out on the phenological patterns and dispersion of a plant community developed naturally after limestone mining operations, in accumulated materials of wastes (spoil banks). The objectives were to focus the seasonality of plant reproductive in a degraded environment; to analyze the community according to dispersal syndrome and to know about plant resources for the animals Monthly observations of flowering and fruiting patterns of the community were done, comparing the herbaceous, shrubs and woody species. Proportion of anemochorous and autochorous was higher in the herbaceous and shrubby strata. The zoochorous ones, on the contrary, were more frequent in the woody stratum. This study showed that natural introduction of the animals at...

Using Ants as bioindicators: Multiscale Issues in Ant Community Ecology Ecology and Society
Andersen, Alan; Wildlife and Ecology, CSIRO Tropical Ecosystems Research Centre; Alan.Andersen@terc.csiro.au.
Ecological patterns and processes are characteristically scale dependent, and research findings often cannot be translated easily from one scale to another. Conservation biology is challenged by a lack of congruence between the spatial scales of ecological research (typically involving small plots) and land management (typically involving whole landscapes). Here, I discuss spatial scaling issues as they relate to an understanding of ant communities and, consequently, their use as bioindicators in land management. Our perceptions of fundamental patterns and processes in ant communities depend on scale: taxa that are behaviorally dominant at one scale are not necessarily so at others, functional groups recognized at one scale are often inappropriate for...

In the interests of improving engagement with Pacific Island communities to enable development of effective and sustainable adaptation strategies to climate change, we looked at how traditional oral narratives in rural/peripheral Fiji communities might be used to inform such strategies. Interviews were undertaken and observations made in 27 communities; because the custodians of traditional knowledge were targeted, most interviewees were 70-79 years old. The view that oral traditions, particularly those referring to environmental history and the observations/precursors of environmental change, were endangered was widespread and regretted. Interviewees’ personal experiences of extreme events (natural disasters) were commonplace but no...
