Nachhaltige Lebensmittelversorgung in der Stadt Organic Eprints
Dubelling, Marielle; Wiskerke, Han; Moschitz, Heidrun.

Full case study report: Kiuruvesi Municipal Catering - Finland Organic Eprints
Risku-Norja, Helmi.
The Kiuruvesi municipality the pioneer in using local and organic food (LOF) in the statutory municipal catering services. The LOF strategy has been determined since the 1990’ies. The strengths lie in the rich regional production structure of agriculture and in the commitment of the municipal authorities to the LOF concept. The LOF strategy is based on territorial approach, and it has been adopted as means of enhancing the attractiveness of the municipality, which is located in a fairly remote area and which has been facing declining population development over the past decades. Prioritising LOF in public food services is an important ingredient in the Kiuruvesi municipality’s brand as the capital of ecological Finland. As a public actor the municipal...

The role of participatory Guarantee Systems for Food security Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Nelson, Erin.
The primary tool for assuring quality of organic products and preventing fraud, and also for promoting commerce, is third party organic certification, which aims to regulate and facilitate the sale of organic products to consumers. Certification plays a role along the entire supply chain and is used by organic producers to identify products that are approved for use in certified production (Fabiansson, 2014), while also serving as product assurance for consumers (Sethuraman and Naidu, 2008). Although third party certification systems play an important role in organic production and trade, they are not always suitable for small-scale operators and local market channels. Third party certification can act as a barrier to entry for smallholder producers...

Urbane Agrikultur in Basel Organic Eprints
Moschitz, Heidrun.

Sustainability and resilience in agrifood systems: reconnecting agriculture, food and the environment. Organic Eprints
Lamine, Claire.
The sustainability and resilience of agrifood systems are generally considered either through the sustainable development paradigm, which focuses on the interactions between agriculture and the environment and often neglects consumption and food issues, or through the relocalisation paradigm, which prevails in the literature on alternative food systems and social movements. Because of its focus on direct producerconsumer relations, the relocalisation perspective suggests a possible transition pathway, but does not fully address the diversity of interdependencies in agrifood systems (food being largely processed, distributed and provided by intermediaries) and therefore fails to effectively reconnect agriculture and food issues. This article shows the need...

The role of Livestock in Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems Organic Eprints
Müller, Adrian.
Livestock play an important part in food systems. They are a source of high quality protein and other nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals; and raising livestock is a way of utilizing otherwise unusable areas and resources for food production – namely grasslands, by-products of food production, and organic waste. Livestock also play a significant role in on-farm and regional nutrient cycles, and they provide people with incomes, assets and livelihoods. However, over the last 50 years we have seen a more than fourfold increase in global meat and egg production, and milk production has more than doubled. At the same time, there was just a twofold growth in the global human population (FAOSTAT, 2015).

A Holistic Sustainability Assessment Method for Urban Food System Governance Organic Eprints
Landert, Jan; Schader, Christian; Moschitz, Heidrun; Stolze, Matthias.
A growing number of people live in cities. Urban food systems and their impacts on ecosystems and socio-economic conditions are becoming increasingly important. To address the challenge of making urban food systems more sustainable, a rising number of assessments of urban food systems have been published. Some used large quantitative datasets while others were descriptive in nature and/or do not address the whole thematic spectrum of sustainability. In this study, an indicator set was developed, which uses widely available data to address all dimensions of sustainability. The indicators focus on policies and measures of public administration and local politics and are based on the guidelines for Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems...

TRACEABILITY AMONG SMALLHOLDERS IN ORGANIC FRESH PRODUCE VALUE CHAINS: CASE OF NAIROBI Organic Eprints
Gichure, Josphat Njenga; Wahome, Raphael Githaiga; Karuri, Edward; Karantininis, Kostas.
Traceability enhances information sharing and disclosure thereby increasing trust among stakeholder along value chains. This research evaluated information flow along organic fresh produce value chains using a participatory study of organic certified farmers and outlets around Nairobi in 2012. Traceability was limited as majority of stakeholders were smallholders who had no functional traceability system. Presence of traceability was positively related to two factor groups; organizational activities and personnel perception. Variables in the organizational activities were also interrelated and include documentation, certification by other quality management standards, training on food safety and traceability system and monitoring. In addition, group...

Organic School Fruit Scheme in Vienna Organic Eprints
Kaiblinger, Karin; Zehetgruber, Rosemarie.
The consumption of fruits and vegetables contributes greatly to the preservation of health. However, less than 20% of the Austrian children consume the recommended quantity of f&v, school pupils consume only between 1/4th and 1/3rd of the recommended quantity. A main cause is the lack of availability. The "organic school fruit scheme" as part of the project "Wiener Jause" (Viennese snack), which we conceived and implemented, aims to rectify this situation for the public primary schools in the 20th district of Vienna using a situational preventive approach. The 20th district is relatively poor - the net income is 16% below the city average -, and more then 40% of the inhabitants have a migriation background. F&v are delivered by local eco-farmers,...

Maintien des valeurs dans la croissance de la bio. Enseignements du projet HealthyGrowth Organic Eprints
Lamine, Claire; Egon, N; Bui, Sibylle.
How do organic initiatives and food chains succeed in maintaining their foundational values along and despite their growth process? This question which appears central in the “conventionnalisation debate” has been tackled by the European project HealthyGrowth (2013-2016, Eranet Core Organic program). In this project, 11 teams from different countries developed and applied to 22 case studies, 5 different perspectives dealing with organization modes and governance, management strategies, communication of values, mediation of values, and resilience in a context of crises and changes. The cross analysis of these case studies, carried out through a multi-perspective approach, made it possible to identify 3 important aspects which allow maintaining values along...

Healthy Growth : Biovallée Case Study Report Organic Eprints
Lamine, Claire; Bui, Sibylle.
Biovallée is one of the three territorial case studies of HealthyGrowth, along with the Biodistretto Cilento (It) and the Bioregion Mühlviertel (Au). Territorial case studies are not focused on a single chain but on a whole territorial agrifood system. This allows to analyse more deeply the modes of coordination between various actors and institutions (public and private), the management and governance models and the ways these contribute to maintain the ’added value’. As they differ from the value-chain focus of the other case studies of the HealthyGrowth project, territorial case studies imply some changes and adaptations in the template, some dimensions being irrelevant in our case.

Evaluation of three family farms producing organic eggs in southern Brazil: animal welfare and biosecurity. Organic Eprints
Escosteguy, Angela; Bossardi, Melissa.
Three family farms producing organic eggs with 5,000, 250 and 100 birds, of the species Gallus gallus domesticus, have been studied. The farms are located in southern Brazil. The study was aimed at evaluating aspects of animal welfare and biosafety due to the increasing importance that these issues are taking on in the society today. The farms with fewer animals (250 and 100) showed better results, as far as animal welfare is concerned, than that property with 5,000 chickens, but the three farms showed medium to low level of biosecurity
