Composting has the potential to mitigate methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from manure. The heterogeneous nature of emitting surfaces makes it difficult to quantify these emissions. CH4 and N2O fluxes measured using eight small chambers (0.72 m2) and a mega chamber (90 m2) were compared, and the effect of aeration on the fluxes during composting was studied. Two batches of compost were placed in three channels and 2-3 small flux chambers were deployed on each channel. The channels were enclosed by a building serving as a mega chamber. Chamber location significantly affected gas fluxes, pointing to strong spatial heterogeneity. Mean CH4 fluxes from the small chambers were similar or... |

Compost has the main role of the organic farming in Egypt, its demand rapidly increased. But for the small scale of the orchards small holders it is a problem, many of Egyptian orchards are small farms (<=0.5 ha), suffering from the lack of small size shredders. Wastes particle size has an impact on the compost industry. Therefore the main object of this project was to design and manufacture a shredder, produces uniform raw material proper for making compost in a short time. This is investigation was done in the National Research Centre, Egypt with the cooperation with scientists from Qingdao Agricultural University, China. This prototype shredder could control the thickness of the recycled orchards wastes according to the needs of compost producers... |

Compression is important to prevent a deterioration in quality pellets for long term storage and the moisture content of the pellets must be reduced to or less. In this research the quality of pellet of compost was studied at air temperatures of 50, 60 and 70, air velocities of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 m/s, particle sizes of 16(1.18mm) and 10(2mm) and pellet diameters of 6 and 8 mm. The Taguchi quality engineering method was used to investigate the effects of parameters on compressive strength of pellet. An orthogonal array, signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to analyze the effect of these compressive strength parameters. Thus, the optimal performance for the compressive strength of pellet was obtained at first level of factor... |

ABSTRACT During composting processes, the degradation of organic waste is accomplished and driven by a succession of microbial populations exhibiting a broad range of functional competencies. A total of 183 bacteria, isolated from a composting process, were evaluated for cellulase activity at different temperatures (37, 50, 60, and 70°C) and pH values. Out of the 22 isolates that showed activity, isolate 380 showed the highest cellulase activity. Its ability to produce cellulase was evaluated in culture medium supplemented with carboxymethyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, wheat straw, and rice husk. The culture medium supplemented with carboxymethyl cellulose induced higher enzyme activity after 6 hours of incubation (0.12 UEA mL-1 min-1). For... |

Livestock manure may contain pathogenic microorganisms which pose a risk to the health of animal or humans if the manure is not adequately treated or disposed of. To determine the fate of Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) non O157 in composted manure from naturally colonized sheep, fresh manure was obtained from animals carrying bacterial cells with stx1/ stx2 genes. Two composting systems were used, aerated and non-aerated, and the experiments were done in Dracena city, São Paulo State. Every week, for seven weeks, one manure sample from six different points in both systems was collected and cultured to determine the presence of E. coli, the presence of the virulence genes in the cells, and also the susceptibility to 10 antimicrobial drugs. The... |

Under semiarid conditions the response of cereal crops to chemical fertilizers and weed control practices with herbicides is often reduced. In fact, the economic profitability of agricultural production in many dryland regions is critically affected by high costs of inputs and low crop yields. As a solution, cropping systems like organic farming, obtaining similar yields and promoting environmental sustainability by reducing fertilizer and herbicides, could be an alternative to conventional systems. In this study, 23 trials were performed in five semiarid regions of Spain during 5 yr to compare different fertilizers and weed control methods on durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) yields. The following rotation pattern was... |

Animal production units with different management systems can be found along the Huasco Valley, Region of Atacama, Chile. These constitute sources of house flies (Musca domestica L.) and other vector fly species that cause damage to animals and nuisance problems in urban areas. In order to asses the importance of fly breeding sources, an experiment was carried out under laboratory conditions to evaluate different types of animal manure and composted swine manure. Time of larval development, larva mortality, pupa size, and weight and time of development to the adult stage were assessed. Results show that swine, poultry and calf manure produced a significantly higher number of adult flies, shorter life cycles and larger and heavier pupae. Cow, dog, goat and... |

Soil compost application is a common soil management practice used by small farmers of Central-South Chile that produces positive effects on soil properties and also promotes presence and activity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This fungi form symbiosis with plant roots improving plant nutrition, as well as producing glomalin, a glycoprotein that has been associated with soil aggregation stability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate, in an Ultisol from Central-South Chile, the effect of different doses of compost on some soil characteristics at the end of the third year of a crop sequence including wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), and grassland (Lolium multiflorum Lam. associated with Trifolium repens L.).... |

The most frequently used substrate for the production of covered root seedlings is peat, the extraction of which is under scrutiny due to its negative environmental impact; however, the use of Sphagnum moss in adequate mixtures constitutes a possible alternative. Lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L.) were sown in Polystyrene trays (240 alveoli, 24 cm³) to test four substrates, 50% Sphagnum moss mixed with 50% humus or compost and 60% Sphagnum moss with 40% humus or compost, and commercial peat was used as a control. A dose (2.5 or 3.5 gL-1) of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) was added to all substrates except for the control mix, and the substrates were subsequently irrigated with or without a fertilizer solution.
