EXCEL ADD-IN TO MODEL THE SOIL COMPRESSION CURVE REA
Gubiani,Paulo I.; Reinert,Dalvan J.; Reichert,José M.; Goulart,Rafael Z.; Fontanela,Eracilda.
ABSTRACT Soil compression curve (CC) provides parameters to identify soil load-bearing capacity and susceptibility to compaction. An Excel add-in (ACC) incorporating graphical procedures for mathematical models for soil CC description and calculation of parameters was developed. By using the ACC, soil CC can be described by means of the Casagrande method, mathematically operationalized with the van Genuchten equation, with or without restrictions on its parameters, and by Dias Junior and Pierce method in its original form and also modified using the void ratio rather than soil bulk density. The ACC uses a single Excel spreadsheet for input and output data, in addition to a graphical interface and a tool for exporting editable charts. Compared to SAS...

Mechanical behaviour of gas-charged fine sediments: model formulation and calibration ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Garziglia, Sebastien.
Multi-phase fluid conditions encountered in geotechnical and geo-environmental problems have led to the development of models that account for the influence of gas solubility and compressibility on the behaviour of soils of various grain sizes. Yet, no consideration has been given to damages related to the nucleation and growth of gas bubbles in fine-grained soils. The purpose of this paper is to present a Cam Clay based constitutive model extended to incorporate such detrimental effects on gassy soils. This is achieved by deriving an analytical expression relating the preconsolidation pressure to a damage parameter dependent on the gas content. That expression is coupled to a deviatoric yield surface accounting for inherent and stress-induced anisotropy....

Highlights of the 3rd International Conference on High Pressure Bioscience and Biotechnology BJMBR
Mignaco,J.A.; Lima,L.M.T.R.; Rosenthal,A.; Foguel,D.; Silva,J.L..
The 3rd International Conference on High Pressure Bioscience and Biotechnology was held in the city of Rio de Janeiro from September 27 to September 30, 2004. The meeting, promoted by the International Association of High Pressure Bioscience and Biotechnology (IAHPBB), congregated top scientists and researchers from all over the world. In common, they shared the use of hydrostatic pressure for research, technical development, or industrial applications. The meeting consisted of invited lectures, contributed papers and a well-attended poster session. Very exciting discussions were held inside and outside the sessions, and the goals of discussing state-of-the-art data and establishing working collaborations and co-operations were fully attained.

Moisture content on the mechanical behavior of crambe grains Ciência Rural
Resende,Osvaldo; Ferreira,Rafael Batista; Ullmann,Renan; Oliveira,Daniel Emanuel Cabral de; Corrêa,Paulo Cesar; Costa,Lílian Moreira.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to verify the influence of moisture content on the values of maximum compressive strength, proportional deformity modulus, elastic coefficients d, e, and f beyond the tangent values, and maximum grain drying of crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst) under compression in natural resting position. Crambe grains with moisture contents ranging from 0.1547 to 0.0482 decimal db were dried at 40°C and uniaxially compressed between two parallel plates in the natural rest position. The gravimetric method was used to monitor reduction in moisture content during drying (weight loss). It was concluded that the compression force required to deform the crambe grains decreases as the moisture content increases. The proportional deformity modulus...
